Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Map of Latin American Dreams is an intimate survey on Latin America's contradictions of history, politics and identity. For more than twenty years, from 1992 to 2013, Martin Weber born in Cile and raised in Argentina, travelled through fifty-three towns and cities in Argentina, Cuba, Mexico, Peru, Nicaragua, Guatemala, Brazil and Colombia. Set against the historical, political and social contexts of eight countries, Map of Latin American Dreams is a selection of 110 carefully staged scenes. From its golden cover to the preface's silver negative inside, the book is an open invitation to a journey from El Dorado to the "New World", all the while reflecting on the relationship between history and photographic practice. AUTHOR: Martin Weber in an Argentinean photographer who divides his time between Buenos Aires and New York, NY. He studied at the University of Buenos Aires, and the International Center of Photography, New York in 1992. Weber has won numerous grants and awards, including in 2008 the Silver Eye Award, and in 2005 a grant from the No Strings Foundation. He received The Prince Claus Grant (2004), two grants from the Hasselblad Foundation (2001 and 1999) and a Guggenheim Fellowship (1998). He has also been an artist-in-residence at The Center of Photography at Woodstock (2004), Lightwork, Syracuse, New York (2002) and IASPIS, Sweden (1998).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its independence in 1810 until the economic crisis of 2001, Argentina has been seen, in the national and international collective imaginary, as a modern country with a powerful economic system, a massive European immigrant population, an especially strong middle class, and an almost nonexistent indigenous culture. In some ways, the early history of Argentina strongly resembles that of the United States, with its march to the prairies and frontier ideology, the image of the cowboy as a national symbol (equivalent to the Argentine gaucho), the importance of the immigrant population, and the advanced and liberal ideas of the founding fathers. But did Argentine history truly follow a linear path toward modernization? How did photography help shape or deconstruct notions associated with Argentina? Photography in Argentina examines the complexities of this country’s history, stressing the heterogeneity of its realities, and especially the power of constructed pho-tographic images—that is, the practice of altering reality for artistic expression, an important vein in Argentine photography. Influential specialists from Argentina have contributed essays on various topics, such as the shaping of national myths, the adaptation of gesture as related to the “disappeared” during the dictatorship period, the role of contemporary photography in the context of recent sociopolitical events, and the reinterpreting of traditional notions of documentary photography in Argentina and the rest of Latin America.

Book excerpt: "Border Witness offers a surprising catalogue of films dealing with the US-Mexico border and released during the past 100 years. It compares these screen visions with what was happening on the ground at the time in both countries. From revolution through to the present global crisis, the films are left to speak for themselves, but their stories are measured alongside the author's experience following decades of research, writing, and activism along the line. Taken together, this book outlines a unique Border Film genre just now entering its Golden Age. This book also comes with a message to both nations that they should learn more from borderlanders about how to conduct cross-border lives"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fernando J. Rosenberg explores Latin American artistic production concerned with the possibility of justice after the establishment, rise, and ebb of the human rights narrative around the turn of the last century. Prior to this, key literary and artistic projects articulated Latin American modernity by attempting to address and supplement the state's inability to embody and enact justice. Rosenberg argues that since the topics of emancipation, identity, and revolution no longer define social concerns, Latin American artistic production is now situated at a point where the logic and conditions of marketization intersect with the notion of rights through which subjects define themselves politically. Rosenberg grounds his study in discussions of literature, film, and visual art (novels of political re-foundations, fictions of truth and reconciliation, visual arts based on cases of disappearance, films about police violence, artistic collaborations with police forces, and judicial documentaries.) In doing so, he provides a highly original examination of the paradoxical demands on current artistic works to produce both capital value and foster human dignity.
