Book excerpt: Excerpt from Martin County in the World War, 1917-1919 It is not fair to too severely condemn those of our people who have remained more foreign than American. There has been no concerted effort made toward Americanization until the war showed its necessity. Heretofore we have encouraged, rather than discouraged, the grouping of European immi grants into localities where they perpetuated the foreign tongue, the foreign language church, school and customs. Previous to the war there had been no real national spirit. The experiences of the struggle taught us the advantage of one national standard for all. To make better Americans of us all has been the thought and endeavor of all patri otic persons since guns and gas, shot and shell, sub marine sinkings and airplane raids showed us the necessity therefor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In the World War, 1917, 1918, 1919: Cottonwood County, Minnesota President Wilson demanded that Germany cease her unlawful attacks upon American shipping, but his righteous demands were met with evasion. Events moved fast, Germany paid no heed to the President's protests, and the United States Govern ment resolved to arm the American ships and to repel such attacks. This course proved useless, so war was the only alternative. On April 6, 1917. Congress passed a resolution de claring that a state of war existed between the United States Government and the German Empire, and the President issued a proclamation calling the nation to arms. Volunteers were called to recruit the Army and Navy and the people were called upon to support the government in any emergency. Every loyal citizen was expected to do his duty. The government at Washington could not win the war alone. The call to service went out to' the remotest parts of the country and the response from all over the land brought with it the assurance of victory. Immediately upon the declaration of war, a call was made for the Army and Navy, the country heretofore always relying on this method of rais ing troops for the army. A great number of our patriotic men and boys responded to this call and were sent to the various camps and training schools which the government had established. When this call to service came the boys of Cottonwood County responded nobly by enlisting in the Army, Navy and Marine Corps. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lest We Forget: 1917 1919 At a special service, attended by the Patriotic Order Sons of America, the Church was presented with a suitable flag and pole. Which was located at the right - hand side of the pulpit. The Men's League also placed a flagpole on the front of the Church building and furnished a flag for general use: and Mr. Harry A. Schmoll, the President of the League, presented the Church with a large and beautiful flag. To be displayed on this pole during favorable weather. The Church was also presented with a handsome Service flag, through the kindness of Mrs. I. P. Pardee. This flag. Containing eighty-six stars. Remained in position on the outside of the Church building throughout the war period. We should furthermore be glad to remember that When the war activities of the community were most urgent in their demands the response of our Congregation was unanimous and always most admirable and praiseworthy. The women were untiring in their support of the Red Cross Society and the Red Cross Canteen. The men worked with the Liberty Loan Organization. Served effectively with the four-minute Men. Assisted the Local Exemption Board. And entered into every line of activity with enthusiasm all aglow and a perseverance that knew no bounds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Service of Love in War Time: American Friends Relief, Work in Europe, 1917-1919 This book does not profess to be a history of the work of relief and reconstruction which Friends have done in France and Russia and in other countries since the fateful autumn of 1914. Only one who has been in the thick of the work on the field can write the final, intimate history of any one of the major relief undertakings of Friends. And as the work since 1917 has been a joint endeavor of English and American Friends the complete history of it must be composite, i. E. Written by both English and Americans. It is to be hoped that persons of leisure will be found in the not distant future who can tell with sufficient detail the inter esting story of the labors of this large band of volunteers who have rebuilt homes, revived agriculture, restored the spirits of depressed refugees, saved the lives of many chil dren and reconstructed extensive areas of the desolated war zones, who have gone out with living faith and with efficient relief into some of the darkest regions of the suffering world, both in war-time and in the no less appalling period Which has followed the armistice. My attempt is much more modest. I am merely endeavor ing here to interpret the effort which American Friends have made to express their spirit of human love to a part of the world - an innocent part - caught in the awful tangle of the tragedy. I should not have written it, certainly not at this time, if it had not been for the irresistible appeal of Isaac Sharpless, President Emeritus of Haverford College. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A landmark history of one hundred years of war waged against the Palestinians from the foremost US historian of the Middle East, told through pivotal events and family history In 1899, Yusuf Diya al-Khalidi, mayor of Jerusalem, alarmed by the Zionist call to create a Jewish national home in Palestine, wrote a letter aimed at Theodore Herzl: the country had an indigenous people who would not easily accept their own displacement. He warned of the perils ahead, ending his note, “in the name of God, let Palestine be left alone.” Thus Rashid Khalidi, al-Khalidi’s great-great-nephew, begins this sweeping history, the first general account of the conflict told from an explicitly Palestinian perspective. Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival materials and the reports of generations of family members—mayors, judges, scholars, diplomats, and journalists—The Hundred Years' War on Palestine upends accepted interpretations of the conflict, which tend, at best, to describe a tragic clash between two peoples with claims to the same territory. Instead, Khalidi traces a hundred years of colonial war on the Palestinians, waged first by the Zionist movement and then Israel, but backed by Britain and the United States, the great powers of the age. He highlights the key episodes in this colonial campaign, from the 1917 Balfour Declaration to the destruction of Palestine in 1948, from Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon to the endless and futile peace process. Original, authoritative, and important, The Hundred Years' War on Palestine is not a chronicle of victimization, nor does it whitewash the mistakes of Palestinian leaders or deny the emergence of national movements on both sides. In reevaluating the forces arrayed against the Palestinians, it offers an illuminating new view of a conflict that continues to this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until the arrival of radio and television, and despite the influence of newspapers, posters were the major medium for mass communication. During the Great War all the belligerent nations produced an extraordinary variety of them - and they did so on a massive scale. As the 200 wartime and immediate post-war posters selected for this book reveal, they were one of the most potent, and memorable, ways of conveying news, information and propaganda. In the most graphic and colourful fashion they promoted values such as patriotism and sacrifice. By using rallying symbols such as flags as well as historical and mythical models, they sought to maintain morale and draw people together by stirring up anger against the enemy. Today their remarkable variety of styles give us an instant insight into the themes and messages the military and civilian authorities wished to publicize. The sheer inventiveness of the poster artists is demonstrated as they focused on key aspects of the propaganda campaign in Britain, France, Germany, America and Russia. The diversity of their work is displayed here in chapters that cover recruitment, money raising, the soldier, the enemy, the family and the home front, films and the post-war world. A century ago, when these images were first viewed, they must have been even more striking in contrast to the poor-quality newspaper photographs and postcards that were available at the time. The Great War was to change that forever. It introduced a means of propaganda that was novel, persuasive and above all, powerful. It was the first media war, and the poster played a key role in it.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For Home and Country examines the propaganda that targeted noncombatants on the home front in the United States and Europe during World War I. Cookbooks, popular magazines, romance novels, and government food agencies targeted women in their homes, especially their kitchens, pressuring them to change their domestic habits. Children were also taught to fear the enemy and support the war through propaganda in the form of toys, games, and books. And when women and children were not the recipients of propaganda, they were often used in propaganda to target men. By examining a diverse collection of literary texts, songs, posters, and toys, Celia Malone Kingsbury reveals how these pervasive materials were used to fight the war's cultural battle.
