Book excerpt: A heartfelt middle grade companion to Marshfield Dreams that captures the boyhood years of twelve-year-old Ralph Fletcher in relatable episodes of everyday disappointments and triumphs. As the oldest of nine kids, Ralph was often cast as another parent to his siblings rather than as an older brother; teetering between these two conflicting roles, Ralph longed to be home alone on a sick day, but hated the emptiness of feeling left behind. He loved to play sports with his neighborhood friends but resented the skillful victories of his younger brother. Thrust into the expectations of impending adolescence, Ralph was curious about girls, but embarrassed to take part in the school square dance. This satisfying memoir offers a snapshot of those pivotal moments between grade school and high school, all while tracing the roots of Ralph Fletcher’s acclaimed storytelling. Book excerpt: The colorful boyhood of a popular author comes to life in this personal account Imagine learning from a nosy classmate that your mother is having yet another baby. To Ralph's classmates, news of one more Fletcher baby is just "scuttlebutt." But for Ralph, the oldest of nine, being part of a large family means more kids to join in the fun—from making tripods in the woods and "snicking" up the rug, to raising chicks and even discovering a meteor (well, maybe). It doesn't feel like there's life beyond Marshfield, Massachusetts. Then one day Dad's new job moves the family to Chicago, and there's so much Ralph has to leave behind. In this humorous and captivating memoir, Ralph Fletcher traces the roots of his storytelling.

Book excerpt: In her critically acclaimed, ingenious memoir, Sarah Messer explores America’s fascination with history, family, and Great Houses. Her Massachusetts childhood home had sheltered the Hatch family for 325 years when her parents bought it in 1965. The will of the house’s original owner, Walter Hatch—which stipulated Red House was to be passed down, "never to be sold or mortgaged from my children and grandchildren forever"—still hung in the living room. In Red House, Messer explores the strange and enriching consequences of growing up with another family’s birthright. Answering the riddle of when shelter becomes first a home and then an identity, Messer has created a classic exploration of heritage, community, and the role architecture plays in our national identity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remembering Rosie is about Block's childhood on a Wisconsin dairy farm in the mid-twentieth century. Growing up on the homestead with her parents and siblings was often idyllic. Still, it never stopped Block from dreaming of making a different life for herself despite many obstacles she'd face in trying to leave the land her German great-grandparents settled in the 1880s.Block and her siblings experienced long hours of tedious and dangerous work. Educational opportunities were limited, and the Ludwig children's one-room school had poorly trained teachers and few books. There was no expectation of girls going on to higher education. Block's observations of her depressive mother, the drudgery of farm life, and the short, cruel lives of farm animals were driving forces that made her take a path less followed. During a time when going against the grain was difficult, Block's restlessness and desire to see a world outside her sheltered community catapulted her into a life that the blue-eyed, blond-haired farm girl never could have imagined.

Let your teaching mentor become your students' writing mentor... ...with engaging mentor texts written and read by Ralph Fletcher... "I wrote all 24 pieces in this book. You'll find an assortment of genres: stories, memoir, poems, essays, and excerpts from novels. The various texts are ordered from easiest (least challenging) to hardest (most challenging). I tried to select short, high-interest pieces. Each one stands on its own with a beginning, middle, and ending. I tried to choose pieces that would bring a sense of closure by the end." ...writer's notes that give students an inside peek into craft... "My Writer's Notes introduce the text, explain my thinking behind various decisions, and point out a few things I want kids to notice. With certain pieces, especially the last three, I highlight revisions I made along the way. I tried hard not to take the mystery out of good writing. Instead these notes are my way of opening the door and leading the student into the text." ...and practical, classroom-tested suggestions like this from your colleagues "One of my students, Suzy, knows that she struggles to provide enough detail in her non-fiction pieces. For her piece about soccer, she told me that she knew she needed to include more details because she didn't want the reader to be confused. We had already read Ralph's "Squirming Wizards of Recycling," so we looked at the Writer's Notes. Ralph said he had brainstormed questions that readers may have had as they read about worm composting, and he then tried to include the answers to those questions in the piece. Suzy decided that she would write down questions that she thought her reader might still have about soccer and then make sure those questions were answered in her writing. Since both Suzy and I have already developed a relationship with Ralph through his texts, it felt like we were inviting an old friend to join our conference." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Flunking the First Grade and Shooting Trout, Les Flake shares his memories and adventures from childhood through young adulthood. Les left Los Angeles at 5 years old in 1946 when his Dad, Horace, purchased a 520-acre farm a few miles north of the small town of Bend, Oregon, for approximately $16,000. His mother, Dolores, thought Horace was joking about the farmhouse having no plumbing system and no electricity. It was no joke! Through the next 9 years his parents, Les, three sisters, and a brother navigated financial poverty and lived rich lives on a farm characterized more by lava rock outcroppings, big sagebrush, and juniper trees than by farm fields. Tumalo Grade School, shooting trout in the Swalley Canal, and an attack by a great horned owl are a part of those memoirs. Les and family eventually moved to Bend, Oregon, where Les writes of Bend Junior High School (1955-1957), first dances, popular songs, trout fishing, and more. His dad's dreams of making a living with a salmon trawler soon took the Flake family to the Coos Bay-North Bend area in the late spring of 1957. Les writes of the beautiful Oregon coast, a 30-foot salmon trawler, Fritz the seaman, dangers on the ocean, a boathouse home in Charleston, Marshfield High, dances, river rope swings, striped bass, dating, campouts, and so many other memories. After highs school, it was off to Brigham Young University and more memories such as a night in jail, death of Les's father, Arizona Club dances (too much fun), great advice from a professor, and Nevada Test Site adventures. The book ends with Les dating and marrying Marcia Allen and beginning Ph.D. studies in Zoology at Washington State University. Readers will be transported to a simpler time without computers and cell phones but nonetheless, filled with wonderful adventures.

Sam Robbins is a farm boy, kidnapped to serve on HMS Victory, the ship on which Lord Nelson will die a hero’s death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. Molly Jennings is a twenty-first-century English girl who’s been transplanted to the United States by her stepfather’s job and is fighting her own battle against loss and loneliness. Two different lives, two centuries apart, are linked by a tiny scrap of fraying cloth that’s tucked into an old book. It draws Molly into Sam’s world, to a moment in time that changed history—a frightening shared moment that holds the key both to secrets from the past and hope for the future.
