Download or read book Petrostate written by Marshall I. Goldman and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-01-20 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the financial collapse of August 1998, it looked as if Russia's day as a superpower had come and gone. That it should recover and reassert itself after less than a decade is nothing short of an economic and political miracle. Based on extensive research, including several interviews with Vladimir Putin, this revealing book chronicles Russia's dramatic reemergence on the world stage, illuminating the key reason for its rebirth: the use of its ever-expanding energy wealth to reassert its traditional great power ambitions. In his deft, informative narrative, Marshall Goldman traces how this has come to be, and how Russia is using its oil-based power as a lever in world politics. The book provides an informative overview of oil in Russia, traces Vladimir Putin's determined effort to reign in the upstart oil oligarchs who had risen to power in the post-Soviet era, and describes Putin's efforts to renationalize and refashion Russia's industries into state companies and his vaunted "national champions" corporations like Gazprom, largely owned by the state, who do the bidding of the state. Goldman shows how Russia paid off its international debt and has gone on to accumulate the world's third largest holdings of foreign currency reserves--all by becoming the world's largest producer of petroleum and the world's second largest exporter. Today, Vladimir Putin and his cohort have stabilized the Russian economy and recentralized power in Moscow, and fossil fuels (oil and natural gas) have made it all possible. The story of oil and gas in Russia is a tale of discovery, intrigue, corruption, wealth, misguidance, greed, patronage, nepotism, and power. Marshall Goldman tells this story with panache, as only one of the world's leading authorities on Russia could.

Download or read book Economic Analysis in Historical Perspective written by J. Creedy and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2014-05-20 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic Analysis in Historical Perspective offers a wide discussion on economics and its history. One of the book’s main principles is to place the several major areas of economic analysis in historical perspective. The book’s first topic is about monetary economics; it includes subtopics such as concepts of money, supply and demand of money, monetary control, and rate of interest. The next chapter highlights the economics of welfare, including its nature, modern issues, classical paradigm, and advancements. In Chapter 4, the main topics are public finance, taxes, and the government’s role in all of it. This chapter also elaborates on public expenditure, taxation, and income redistribution. In the last remaining chapters, the discussion circles around the topic’s relevant theories, metrics, and statistics. The text serves as a valuable reference to undergraduates or postgraduates of economics.
Download or read book Sworn to Secrecy written by Chet Sapalio and published by Dog Ear Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sworn to Secrecy brings to life the 1947 Roswell Incident-the crash and recovery of a craft of unknown origin. The historical novel focuses on real military and political characters and weaves a saga about how their participation in this historical event affected their professional and personal lives. While flying a nuclear bomb training mission, "Butch" Blanchard, a colonel in the Army Air Corps, witnesses an object traveling at an impossible speed, almost colliding with his plane. When the craft crashes in the New Mexico desert just outside of Roswell, Butch is placed in charge of the crash recovery and clean-up. Five "humanoid" bodies are discovered near the crash site, and Butch is suddenly dealing with alien autopsies and technology and is entangled in a massive government cover-up. He spends the rest of his career working with those who orchestrated the cover-up. As he continues to climb in rank and is ultimately promoted to deputy Joint Chief, his career aspirations and the government cover-up clash with his quest to expose the truth. The novel is a story of power struggles, conspiracy and cover-up during the Cold War era. It is set against a backdrop of the dawn of the nuclear age and the influences of the vast military complex that guided the emergence of the world's superpowers. It explores man's need to understand his place in the universe and his drive for self-preservation. Many of the events portrayed in this piece of historical fictional are supported by historical documents included in the novel's final sections. Chet Sapalio studied physics and philosophy, with a focus on general relativity and quantum theory, at the University of Pittsburgh and at the graduate level at Pennsylvania State University. His research has focused on alternate propulsion methods, including warp drive, wormhole creation, quantum tunneling, dimensional shifting and time travel. In 1999, Sapalio produced a documentary for television "Conspiracy X - Government Secrets Revealed" after living in Roswell, N.M., for two years and researching the 1947 Roswell Incident.
