Matthew Iwuji's Marriage Form in Nigeria becomes an important channel for the knowledge of the legal requirements for a valid contract of marriage in Nigeria, and it is a valuable contribution to the development and clarification of Nigerian family law. The author limits his investigations and exclusively furnishes facts on the formalities surrounding the marriage relationship in that country. Prof. Jose Castano Faculty of Law Pont. Lateran University, Rome. ***** Marriage Form in Nigeria, as a classic comparative legal study, provides very useful insight into the most fundamental issue of marriage in Nigeria in an age of intercultural marriages. It is a book for everyone: parents, young people, pastors who seek to establish freedom to marry, and law students and those interested in Nigerian family law. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the third edition of an established and leading book on family law in Nigeria. Since the last edition in 1990 significant judicial and statutory enactments have taken place in the area of study. The new edition incorporates these changes and explains their implications. The chapters have been comprehensively re-written to reflect the changes in the law and to update all relevant information including the Same Sex Bill and the Nigerian Law Reform Commissions draft Marriage Act. New chapters have been included on domestic violence and widowhood respectively to reflect the continuing developments in Nigerian family law. The new Child's Right Act of 2003 and the similar state legislations have been analysed in the three new chapters. The non-customary law rules in the intestate succession have been extensively recast to reflect the provisions of the Marriage act as contained in the Lawa of the Federation of Nigeria 2004. This edition has devoted considerable attention to the applicable customary laws on the family and provides extensive treatment of Islamic Law Rules and their interpretations and application by the superior court. Familu law in Nigeria presents a fresh view not only on the applicable rules on Nigerian family law but also suggest new directions and underlines the socio-economic implications.

Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this concise exposition and analysis of the essential elements of law with regard to family relations, marital property, and succession to estates in Nigeria covers the legal rules and customs pertaining to the intertwined civic status of persons, the family, and property. After an informative general introduction, the book proceeds to an in-depth discussion of the sources and instruments of family and succession law, the authorities that adjudicate and administer the laws, and issues surrounding the person as a legal entity and the legal disposition of property among family members. Such matters as nationality, domicile, and residence; marriage, divorce, and cohabitation; adoption and guardianship; succession and inter vivos arrangements; and the acquisition and administration of estates are all treated to a degree of depth that will prove useful in nearly any situation likely to arise in legal practice. The book is primarily designed to assist lawyers who find themselves having to apply rules of international private law or otherwise handling cases connected with Nigeria. It will also be of great value to students and practitioners as a quick guide and easy-to-use practical resource in the field, and especially to academicians and researchers engaged in comparative studies by providing the necessary, basic material of family and succession law.

Book excerpt: The book is an extract from my doctorate degree thesis dealing with the formal requirements for the celebration of marriage: a comparative study of canon law, Nigerian statutory law, and customary law. It is universally recognized that consent of parties brings about marriage. But for consent to result in marriage, it must be validly exchanged/manifested. Formal requirements for marriage celebration deals with valid exchange of consent. The work thus concentrates on what makes a valid matrimonial consent under the Nigerian law.

Book excerpt: This book informs that the practice of child marriage is harmful and inimical to the health, education, social wellbeing, socio-economic empowerment, and the fundamental rights of the child. It shows the conflicts between the practice and the public policy commitments and efforts of the government of Nigeria on the right to health, education, human/fundamental rights, the MDGs, the Nigeria Vision 20:2020, the goals of NEPAD and the transformation of Nigeria. It exposes the unsustainable arguments seeking to justify child marriage. This book calls on all individuals, legal persons, state and non-state actors and development partners including YOU to join and support the advocacy to end child marriage in Nigeria. For those who are yet to appreciate the girl-child as a person of great value like the male counterpart, this book is here to change such orientation.

Book excerpt: Discover Nigeria, Africa's most populous country, in this thematic encyclopedia that covers everything from geography and economics to etiquette and pop culture. Part of Bloomsbury's Understanding Modern Nations series, this volume takes readers on a tour of contemporary Nigeria, helping them better understand the country and the many cultures, religions, and ethnicities that call it home. Chapters are organized thematically, examining a variety of topics, including geography, history, government, economics, religion, ethnic and social groups, gender, education, language, etiquette, food, literature and the arts, and pop culture. Each chapter begins with an overview essay, followed by a selection of encyclopedic entries that provide a more nuanced look at that facet of modern Nigeria. The main text is supplemented with sidebars that highlight additional high-interest topics. A collection of appendices rounds out the volume, offering short vignettes of daily life in the country, a glossary of key terms, statistical data, and a list of state holidays. Once a pawn of British colonialism, today Nigeria is a sovereign nation and key player on the world stage. Its vast oil resources have made it an international powerhouse and the wealthiest country on the African continent, yet political unrest and corruption, and ethnic and religious violence continue to threaten this prosperity. Nigeria is equally rich culturally, a nation where time-honored traditions mix with contemporary influences. Explore the diversity of modern Nigeria in this concise and accessible volume.

This volume in The Library of Essays on Sexuality and Religion focuses on these 'new' religions and their often contentious attitudes towards human sexuality. Part 1, through previously-published articles, provides instances of affirming orientations of the 'new' religions towards sexuality. This entails scrutinising examples of innovative religion from a historical perspective, as well as those of a more contemporary nature. Part 2 examines, with pertinent illustrations, the controversial character of 'new' religions in their 'cultist' forms and matters of sexual control and abuse. Part 3 considers sexuality as articulated through paganism, the occult and esotericism in the postmodern setting. Part 4 examines both hetero- and non-hetero- expressions of sexuality through the so-called 'New Spiritualities', Quasi-religions and the more 'hidden' forms of religiosity.

This book was released on 2015-08-06 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marriage was ordained by God for the good of spouses and for procreation. But how often does marriage turn out to bring unhappiness to partners! And how often do even happy marriages end up childless! Among the Igbo of South-eastern Nigeria, to whom offspring is the chief goal of marriage, childlessness leads often to unhappiness in marriage and not less often to the break-up of marriages or to polygamy. In this work, the author expounds the importance of marriage and its practice among the Igbo. He explains the importance of children in Igbo understanding of marriage and identifies childlessness as the key factor which could endanger (and sometimes do endanger) the Igbo acceptance of the Catholic doctrine of the indissolubility of marriage. Using the relevant clauses of the Code of Canon Law, the author explains in detail the Catholic understanding of marriage and the goals of the catholic doctrine on marriage. He writes of the possibility of marriage impediments due to impotence and sterility (that lead to childlessness) and recommends not only a thorough pre-marriage preparation but also a continual formation of marriage couples as efforts that could check the increasing rate of divorce and polygamy due to childlessness. But the author knows that childlessness can still occur despite all precautions. He therefore recommends adoption (instead of polygamy) as the ultimate panacea to childlessness in marriage. The author condemns in unmistakable terms the mentality among the Igbo which blames and traumatizes the woman in cases of childlessness.

Book excerpt: Dr Aligwekwe’s previous books have been exceptionally focused on reviewing African culture/tradition through history; aimed at both recapturing and, thus, perpetuating those laudable elements that could be submerged by some contemporary indiscriminate and harmful forces of change. These publications called for the elimination of the non-meritorious and contemptible, and the enhancement of the favourable. The present volume, Behavioural Science for Students of Science and Technology, is approximately a sum total of some other key areas of the author’s university lectures, and is directed particularly to students and researchers of contemporary science and technology in Africa in particular and other relevant regions of the world in general, to help disseminate the awareness that can save Africa from plunging into the same potholes in which the leaders of civilizations overly reliant on modern science and technology have found themselves and are struggling to find a way out of. Science and technology and culture are naturally interdependent. However, while immersed in the enthusiasm for success, science and technology could easily neglect or bypass the negative human and social effects of such efforts—its objectives are purely technical or “dry-cut” in terms of their techno-economic aims; whereas socio-cultural and symbolic values (inevitable realities of life) are essential instruments for curbing excessiveness and rashness in Man’s rush to advance science and technology. Could an African example temper past world mistakes and offer a taste of the usefulness and benefit of caution?
