Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marmoset monkeys are small primates belonging to the Callitrichidae family, known for their diminutive size, distinctive appearance, and lively demeanor. Here's a description of the marmoset monkey: Size and Appearance: Marmosets are among the smallest primates, with most species weighing between 200 to 400 grams (7 to 14 ounces) and measuring around 15 to 30 centimeters (6 to 12 inches) in length, not including their tails. They have a characteristic long tail, typically longer than their body, which they use for balance while moving through trees. Marmosets have soft, thick fur ranging in color from gray to brown, often with streaks of black or white. Habitat: Marmosets are native to South America, primarily found in the rainforests of Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. They inhabit a variety of forest habitats, including primary and secondary forests, where they spend most of their time in the upper canopy. Diet: Marmosets are omnivorous, feeding on a varied diet of fruits, flowers, insects, small vertebrates, and tree sap. They have specialized teeth adapted for gouging tree bark to access sap, which is an essential part of their diet. Behavior: Marmosets are highly social animals, typically living in family groups consisting of a breeding pair and their offspring. They communicate through a range of vocalizations, including chirps, trills, and whistles. Marmosets are known for their cooperative breeding behavior, where older siblings help care for and protect younger siblings. Reproduction: Marmosets have a unique reproductive system compared to other primates. Females typically give birth to twins twice a year, although single births and occasional triplets can also occur. Both parents and older siblings participate in caring for the infants, carrying them on their backs and providing food and protection. Conservation Status: While some species of marmosets are relatively common, others are threatened by habitat loss, deforestation, and the illegal pet trade. Conservation efforts are underway to protect marmoset populations and their habitats. Overall, marmoset monkeys are fascinating creatures with unique adaptations and social behaviors, making them a subject of interest for researchers and conservationists studying primate biology and behavior.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Callithrix, the scientific name for marmoset monkeys, is a member of the Callitrichidae family, which also contains tamarins. With a body length that varies from 7 to 12 inches and a tail that may be longer than the body, they are among the smallest primates. These monkeys are indigenous to South America's tropical jungles, especially those in Brazil. Marmosets are recognized for their unique physical characteristics, which include: - Body Size and Weight: Marmosets are small, nimble animals that typically weigh 250 to 500 grams. - Fur & Coloration: Their silky, smooth fur comes in a variety of colors, including gray, white, black, and brown according on the species. - Facial Features: With tufts of hair around their ears, big, expressive eyes, and a typically curious expression, they frequently have a distinctive facial appearance. - Tail: Rather than gripping, they frequently use their long, non-prehensile tail for balance. Marmosets are extremely gregarious creatures that inhabit troops, or family groups, that can have anywhere from a handful to more than a dozen members. These armies typically comprise of a dominant breeding pair and their progeny, and they have a complicated social structure. Scent marking, body language, and a variety of vocalizations are used by the group to communicate. In the wild, they eat a wide variety of foods, such as fruits, insects, tiny vertebrates, gum or tree sap. With their keen claws, they can easily cling to tree trunks and branches since they are adapted to climbing and feeding in the forest canopy. The Captive History of Marmoset Monkeys Marmosets kept in captivity have a long history that spans several centuries. Early in the 1500s, Portuguese explorers were some of the first in Europe to come upon marmosets. They returned these unusual animals to Europe, where their diminutive stature and endearing look made them popular pets and status symbols among the nobility. Exotic animal collections, also known as "menageries," were popular among the wealthy during the Victorian era. Because they were relatively new and easier to care for than larger monkeys, marmosets were prominently displayed in these museums. During this time, there were some notable attempts to breed marmosets in captivity, but little was known about their requirements and care. As the demand for exotic pets increased in the 20th century, marmosets became more accessible thanks to the pet trade. However, worries regarding the moral treatment of these creatures and the effects of their capture on wild populations arose as a result of the rising demand. The 1973-established Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) assisted in controlling and overseeing marmoset trade to make sure it did not jeopardize the species' ability to survive in the wild. Significant progress has been made in our understanding of marmoset care in captivity during the last few decades. Current methods place a strong emphasis on creating an environment that is as close to their original home as feasible. This includes a balanced nutrition, appropriate interaction, and toys and activities that stimulate the mind. The longevity and general health of marmosets kept in captivity have also improved with the advent of specialty veterinarian care. These days, marmosets are housed in zoos and nature sanctuaries, maintained as pets, and utilized in scientific study. Their care and management need to be approached differently in each situation. Because of their intricate habits and genetic connections to humans, marmosets have been used as useful models in studies to understand human ailments. The main goals of zoos and sanctuaries are public education about these amazing primates, breeding initiatives, and conservation activities.

This book presents the knowledge of the social development of rhesus infants and compares with data on other species. Organized into four chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the interspecies differences in the social influences affecting young primates. This text then examines the nature of the interactions between the infant and its various social companions, wherein each type of social companion may interact with the infant in a number of ways. Other chapters consider the nature of the social organization, which may be presumed to have been shaped by the ecological pressures of the natural habitat. This book discusses as well the color vision and visual acuity in different animals. The final chapter deals with the aspects of primate hearing. This book is a valuable resource for students and research workers.

Book excerpt: The Common Marmoset in Captivity and Biomedical Research is the first text dedicated exclusively to this species, filling an urgent need for an encyclopedic compilation of the existing information. Sponsored by the AmericanCollege of Laboratory Animal Medicine as part of its authoritative Blue Book series, the book covers the biology, management, diseases, and clinical and research applications of this important species. The common marmoset(Callithrix jacchus) has come of age in the scientific community as a behaviorally complex, cognitively advanced, small, prolific, and easily maintained nonhuman primate with many of the advantages of larger animals, such asmacaques, but without the attendant physical and zoonotic risks. Marmosets are currently being used in diverse areas of inquiry, including vision and auditory research, infectious disease, cognitive neuroscience, behavior, reproductive biology, toxicology and drug development, and aging. Themarmoset genome has been sequenced and there is currently an intensive effort to apply gene editing technologies to the species. The creation of transgenic marmosets will provide researchers with a small nonhuman primatemodel to study a number of poorly understood disorders, like autism. Presents a complete view of the marmoset, covering their biology and management, diseases and clinical applications, and research applications Includes contributions from renowned and international authors and editors Provides the first authoritative and comprehensive treatment of marmosets in biomedical research as part of the ACLAM Series
