Book excerpt: Excerpt from Markets for Forest Products in Southwest Georgia Forest products are an important industry in Georgia. In recent years, the State has consistently ranked either fifth or sixth in the Nation in the manufacture of both lumber and veneer and among the top ten in the production of pulpwood. Georgia is also noted for the variety of its minor wood products ranging from hickory ski blanks and parts for textile machinery to fence posts. Yet, unlike some other states with well= developed forest products industries, the commercial forest land of Georgia is predominantly in small ownerships. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Markets for Forest Products in Southeast Georgia Certainly the most practical way to sell timber is to market the product which will net the largest return, without overcutting or other wise impairing the Opportunities for future sales. What that product may be will be determined by the quality, size, and Species composition of the timber stand and by the markets which are available. Often it develops that sales of two or more products, such as poles and saw timber, or veneer logs and pulpwood, will yield a larger aggregate return than the sale of one average - quality product. Much of the farm woodland in South east Georgia lends itself to such combined sales, but to take advantage of this fact the owners must determine what products their individual stands are capable of producing, the location of markets for such products, and the price each prospective buyer will pay. Table 2 on pages 4 and 5 lists the average prices that were paid for various species and products in February 1949. Since then, a slacken ing demand for many finished wood products and the presence of increasing amounts of timber on the market have caused a reduction in the prices being offered for stumpage and rough forest products. It should also be remembered that stand quality, topography, length of haul, and other phys ical factors all exert an influence on the price a buyer can afford to pay. For these reasons, the chief usefulness of the prices shown is for compar ing products and Species. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Resources of South Florida, 1949 Acreage of forest land: Approximately 42 percent of the total land area in South Florida is occupied by forests. However, one - third of the forest land is considered nonproductive because it lacks the capacity to produce timber of commercial size or because the timber is so scattered and isolated it could not be economically harvested. In 1949, about million acres in this Survey Unit were classified as commercial forest land. The original survey in 1936 found very nearly the same acreage in commercial forest land, indicating little, if any, change during the period. It is interesting to note that marsh lands in the Everglades occupy a slightly greater acreage in the Unit than the forests do. The forest and marsh areas combined make up nearly 86 percent of the total land area. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wood Use by Manufacturing Firms in Minneapolis and St. Paul Farmer Brown cannot prosper by producing brown eggs when the house wife buying his eggs wants white ones. The farmer must, therefore, either find a way to make his chickens lay white eggs or find markets for his brown ones. Forest products producers are faced With much the same problem. At present, Minnesota has large surpluses of hardwood timber. Although the total volume of timber has increased, much of the increase has been in presently low-valued species such as elm, aspen, ash, and paper birch. For example, in 1953 the Forest Survey estimated the annual allowable cut of aspen sawtimber at million board feet, while the amount cut was only 44 million board feet. Farmer Brown by knowing the facts of the egg market may be able to find purchasers who could use brown eggs as well as white ones. Perhaps he may find that his eggs must be graded or sent to market in different quantities, or that a market exists where he did not expect to find one. Forest managers, lumber operators, and firms purchasing lumber may all profit by the same type of information about lumber markets. Recently the Division of Forestry of the Minnesota Department of Conservation, and the Lake States Forest Experiment Station cooperated in a study designed, first, to find the best means of collecting lumber consumption data, and second, to determine the volume and characteristics of the lumber used by manufacturing industries in Minneapolis and St. Paul. Service, U. S. Department of Agriculture. The Station is maintained in St. Paul 1, Minn., in cooperation With the University of Minnesota. The Twin Cities manufacturing industries were chosen for the study since they are heavy, though discriminating, users of lumber in manu facture, shipping, and storage, and they provide a market for timber cut in this area. In a sense, these industries represent the last part of the market chain-yet a very important part since they decide what amounts and kinds of lumber will be purchased. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transportation Costs for Forest Products From the Puget Sound Area and Alaska to Pacific Rim Markets Distance traveled is important, but demand factors and the competitiveness of the transportation industry also influence rate determination and may offset the influence of distance. Long, heavily traveled, competitive routes, may have substantially lower rates than short, lightly traveled, non-competitive routes (branch Empirical research on ocean transportation costs for forest products confirms that freight rates for forest products are determined by several factors besides distance (wisdom and Jones These include commodity-unit value, commodity-stowage factor, quan tity shipped, volume of trade on a route, and trade balance on a route. Whether Alaska has a transportation-cost advantage depends on whether the dis tance factor-outweighs other factors that might put Alaska at a disadvantage, such as volume of trade, backhaul opportunities, and weather. The net effect of these some times conflicting factors is an empirical matter that can be answered only by compar ing rates from the Alaska and Puget Sound area to Pacific Rim countries by using appropriate statistical methods. That is the purpose of this study. Procedure - The analysis was conducted in two stages and was repeated for three products, logs, cants and wood pulp. The first stage used analysis of covariance (agov) to test whether distance is an important determinant of transportation cost. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biennial Report of the Southeastern Forest Experiment Station for the Years 1947 and 1948 In the Southeast (the five coastal states Virginia to Florida, inclusive) as elsewhere, high prices and strong demand continued to charac' terize the market for forest products of all kinds throughout most of the 1947-1948 period. Pulpwood production in 1947 was 12 percent greater than in 1945, reflecting an increase in capacity at new and existing mills. Lumber production increased over 1945 by about 18 percent. Producing saw mills totalled nearly nearly a 60 percent increase over 1942. Forest industry expansion continued, one indication being an increasing demand for resource information as obtained by the Forest Survey. The Station now handles several hundred Special requests per year. Though some price adjustment and a more exacting.market were clearly indicated at the close of 1948, the probable demand for wood over the next decade or so.
