Book excerpt: Every Business Is God’s Business. The notion that labor for profit and worship of God are now, and always have been, worlds apart, is patently false. The Early Church founders were mostly community leaders and highly successful business people. The writing of the Gospels was entrusted to Luke, a medical doctor; Matthew, a retired tax collector; Mark, the manager of a family trust; and John, a food supplier. Lydia was a dealer in purple cloth. Dorcas was a clothes designer. Today, more than ever, the heart of our cities is the marketplace. Yet the perceived wall between commercial pursuit and service to God continues to knock down that wall and build the foundation for an unparalleled marketplace revival. Only then can we extend God’s kingdom to every corner of our world.

Book excerpt: How do we work alongside people with whom we do not see eye to eye week after week? Daily following Christ in the marketplace often make us feel like we are living in two economies. Christians are required to live life aware of two realities. The first is in the tangible world where people live and work, and which God created and He told us to "tend to" (Genesis 2:15). The second is the spiritual world with its eternal perspective. In one economy, we seek to pursue God's call to "work it and take care of it (His Creation)" through our daily work with excellence and integrity in a world where we do not always see eye to eye with our colleagues and bosses. In the other economy, we seek to respond to Christ's lordship over all our lives, including workplace, family, community and church (Colossians 3:23). We often experience times when our personal faith clashes with the demands of our jobs and our roles in the public arena. The Bible affirms that all work, paid or unpaid, in all spheres of His creation matter to Him. Jesus Christ, praying to the Father and with His leadership team during His last night on earth, said "I have brought You glory on earth by completing the work You gave me to do As You sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world" (John 17:4, 18). How do we define success in terms that encompass all of life, not merely our career goals and accomplishments? Our goal is to develop a healthy work ethic rather than shifting our values in our work situations. The shift from driven ambition to a healthy work ethic, the shift from moral relativity to steadfast character, are some of the changes God wants to bring about as we live out our lives in these two economies. Each of the 10 topics (two lessons each) includes an opening reflection for group discussion to open up the topic, some suggested biblical passages to read to stimulate your thinking, and some leaders notes to help your discussion and application of the texts. These lessons are designed to help the reader integrate biblical faith and daily life at work where so many people spend 40 to 60 hours a week. The Bible tells us God has entrusted His work since Creation into our hands (Genesis 2:15, Psalm 8:6), but how do we follow His calling in our pluralistic, relativistic world of the public arena? This study guide is designed to be a helpful tool for individuals or groups to read and discuss together as they seek to live out their calling from God. Each lesson is designed for a an hour study, they can be used by small groups meeting before work or during a lunch break.

Book excerpt: “The Hebrew root word for ‘work’ is also the root word for ‘service’, particularly service to God in worship. By combining the two English words, ‘work’ and ‘worship’, I hope to challenge people to integrate their faith and work. Work does not just refer to what is done in paid employment. I believe God sees work as any purposeful activity requiring focus and effort. It could be housework, schoolwork, caring for children or parents, study, paid work, voluntary work, etc.” — Kara Martin In her book, Kara explores the biblical view of work, provides six spiritual disciplines to integrate faith and work, shares practical wisdom on how to make a difference in the workplace, and offers ideas to help churches better equip their congregations to live out their faith at work.

Massive population movements of the last century have radically challenged our study and practice of mission. Where the church once rallied to go out into “the regions beyond,” Christian mission is currently required to respond and adapt to “missions around.” As a result, leaders in this field have been developing diaspora missiology to provide a missiological framework for understanding and participating in God’s redemptive mission among peoples living outside their places of origin. In this volume, experts in diaspora missiology from across the globe analyze the development of missions to migrants and add to our understanding of the contemporary church’s opportunities and responsibilities for mission amongst diaspora groups.

Book excerpt: The perfect gift! A specially priced, beautifully designed hardcover edition of The Joy of the Gospel with a foreword by Robert Barron and an afterword by James Martin, SJ. “The joy of the gospel fills the hearts and lives of all who encounter Jesus… In this Exhortation I wish to encourage the Christian faithful to embark upon a new chapter of evangelization marked by this joy, while pointing out new paths for the Church’s journey in years to come.” – Pope Francis This special edition of Pope Francis's popular message of hope explores themes that are important for believers in the 21st century. Examining the many obstacles to faith and what can be done to overcome those hurdles, he emphasizes the importance of service to God and all his creation. Advocating for “the homeless, the addicted, refugees, indigenous peoples, the elderly who are increasingly isolated and abandoned,” the Holy Father shows us how to respond to poverty and current economic challenges that affect us locally and globally. Ultimately, Pope Francis demonstrates how to develop a more personal relationship with Jesus Christ, “to recognize the traces of God’s Spirit in events great and small.” Profound in its insight, yet warm and accessible in its tone, The Joy of the Gospel is a call to action to live a life motivated by divine love and, in turn, to experience heaven on earth. Includes a foreword by Robert Barron, author of Catholicism: A Journey to the Heart of the Faith and James Martin, SJ, author of Jesus: A Pilgrimage

Many are taught it's just a place to share your faith or earn a paycheck to donate to missions. Businessman Hugh Whelchel was just that guy but knew there had to be more. His thorough biblical investigation reveals the eternal significance of work within the grand biblical story of God's mission throughout history."--Publisher description.
