Book Synopsis Bank Mergers & Acquisitions by : Yakov Amihud
Download or read book Bank Mergers & Acquisitions written by Yakov Amihud and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the financial services industry becomes increasingly international, the more narrowly defined and historically protected national financial markets become less significant. Consequently, financial institutions must achieve a critical size in order to compete. Bank Mergers & Acquisitions analyses the major issues associated with the large wave of bank mergers and acquisitions in the 1990's. While the effects of these changes have been most pronounced in the commercial banking industry, they also have a profound impact on other financial institutions: insurance firms, investment banks, and institutional investors. Bank Mergers & Acquisitions is divided into three major sections: A general and theoretical background to the topic of bank mergers and acquisitions; the effect of bank mergers on efficiency and shareholders' wealth; and regulatory and legal issues associated with mergers of financial institutions. It brings together contributions from leading scholars and high-level practitioners in economics, finance and law.

Book Synopsis Application of Quantitative Techniques for the Prediction of Bank Acquisition Targets by : Fotios Pasiouras
Download or read book Application of Quantitative Techniques for the Prediction of Bank Acquisition Targets written by Fotios Pasiouras and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2005 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the banking industry has faced significant challenges due to deregulation, globalization, financial innovation, and intensified global competition. In response to these challenges, banks have adopted strategies to grow and expand their activities, with mergers and acquisitions (M & As) being one of the most popular over the last decade. This unique book thus discusses the use of quantitative classification methods for the prediction of bank acquisitions. With an overview of the M & A trends in the EU banking industry and a survey of the motives for M & As, the authors compare various statistical and computational methodologies used to analyze and predict bank acquisitions. The material constitutes a useful basis for researchers and practitioners in banking management to develop and analyze investment decisions related to M & As.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2006 in the subject Business economics - Investment and Finance, grade: 1,3, Humboldt-University of Berlin (Institut f r Bank- und B rsenwesen), course: Hauptseminar Finanzierung, 20 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This paper observes the impacts of domestic US commercial bank M&As in the 1990s on individual institutions. It shows potential changes in a bank's risk exposure and how these can affect a merged bank's value. It provides a theoretical consideration as well as a review of empirical studies. The result is that a merger might lead to a risk benefit. In this case, there is, c.p., potential for a value increase. Empirically, risk benefits were either absent or offset by managers' higher risk taking.
Book Synopsis The Performance Effects of Mergers within the German Cooperative Banking Sector by : Timo Göhlich
Download or read book The Performance Effects of Mergers within the German Cooperative Banking Sector written by Timo Göhlich and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2012-11-26 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2012 in the subject Business economics - Banking, Stock Exchanges, Insurance, Accounting, grade: 8, University of Twente (School of Management and Governance), language: English, abstract: In the following thesis I examine the performance effects of merger within the German cooperative banking sector on the basis of agency, synergy and market power related changes. Furthermore, from a strategic management perspective the role of strategic similarities is analyzed. Performance enhancing effects are found from a synergy and market power theory perspective in terms of a reduction in interest costs. Furthermore, problems with synergy gains in the area of personnel costs are discovered. These are so serious that they have hampered a significant change in overall bank performance. A change in market power is also measured in terms of a significant increase in other operating income. It is not possible to detect any significant change in agency related costs. Further, I describe that strategic similarities and size differences are not leading to increased profitability. Instead, differences in diversity of earnings are found to be performance enhancing. Therefore, the previously described increase in other operating income can also be facilitated by economies of scope: services that are originally only provided to the customers of one bank are in the post-merger period provided to the united institute’s combined customer base.
Book Synopsis Bank Mergers in the Financial Crisis by : Michael Hellwig
Download or read book Bank Mergers in the Financial Crisis written by Michael Hellwig and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We analyze a large merger in the Dutch banking market during the financial crisis using disaggregated data. Based on a merger simulation model, we evaluate merger-induced changes in the interest rates for savings accounts. We find that the merging banks decreased interest rates by 3 to 5 percent and competitors by up to 1 percent. These anti-competitive effects translate into a loss of consumer welfare by roughly 69 million euros in 2010. We identify heterogeneous effects indicating that less educated consumers with lower savings are most affected. Our findings highlight the important role of competition policy during financial crisis mitigation.

Book Synopsis Assessing the Performance of Banking M&As in Europe by : Rym Ayadi
Download or read book Assessing the Performance of Banking M&As in Europe written by Rym Ayadi and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European banking sector consolidated at a rapid pace throughout the 1990s. It was pushed along by several concurrent factors: the deregulation of banking activities, the further integration of the European financial market, financial globalization, technological and financial innovations, the imperative of value creation, and the introduction of the euro. Far from slowing down, this consolidation process is expected to accelerate over the coming years. This book examines the performance of mergers and acquisitions (M&As) in the banking industry in Europe and introduces a new conceptual approach for assessing the phenomenon. The results show that the economic and financial performance of a banking M&A depends on its underlying strategy. This strategy is based on two factors: a bank's initial activities and its geographical reach. The book demonstrates that achieving the optimal combination of these two factors is critical to the success or failure of an M&A.

This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This far-reaching study shows that operating efficiencies are not what are driving today's unrelenting bank merger mania. It suggests that bank mergers and consolidation may have effects that are contrary to consumer and non-financial business interests, such as lower rates of interest, increasing fees, and tighter credit constraints. Dymski recommends several new policies to apply to the evaluation of prospective mergers.
