Yet, research shows that IJVs are volatile, difficult to manage, and often fail, especially when the joint venture is located in a developing country. Many studies look at a range of different factors behind IJV success or failure, and a few longitudinal studies have shed light on some of the complex management processes within IJVs. Many researchers have concluded that the high rate of IJV failure is due to internal tensions that are inherent to IJVs, but viable solutions for practitioners are rare. In the absence of a model that adequately explains the longitudinal aspects and determinants of IJV performance, we see firms electing to stay in underperforming IJVs, even though more profitable modes of entry into foreign markets exist. In this thesis I analyze market entry and expansion through IJVs using a multi-causal analysis of IJV performance. I begin with a critical evaluation of the IJV literature. I then develop a process-oriented model that may explain why firms persist with failing IJVs. Finally, I draw several important conclusions that have valuable implications for practitioners and for future research.

Book excerpt: Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2010 in the subject Business economics - Marketing, Corporate Communication, CRM, Market Research, Social Media, grade: 1,0, Munich University of Applied Sciences (Fakultät 09 für Wirtschafts-Ingenieurwesen: Master of Business Administration&Engineering), course: Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and International Joint Venture (IJV) in Brazil, language: English, abstract: For several decades now, we are experiencing an unavoidable and strongly growing market globalization. Beyond the traditional export business, industrial globalization keeps penetrating the world ́s countries and markets under many different forms of international businesses and strategic alliances. This term paper describes, justifies and compares two forms of cross-border business expansion strategies into the Brazilian Market that a Multi-National-Corporation (MNC) may resort to: Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and International Joint Venture (IJV). Their implementation strongly depends of the market type that a host country offers. A common denominator of both international market entry modes is the obviously advantageous presence of interests of the involved MNC ́s when trying to expand their businesses into host countries. This direct presence in a host country means additional speed to market and provides the MNC ́s far more possibilities of establishing, conducting and controlling international businesses, than the traditional export business. The generalizing statement made in the paragraph above is only meant to provide an introductory feeling on how the market of a host country determines the strategy for business expansion. Naturally, there are far more important facts and reasons to be considered that ultimately force investors into conducting extensive, deep and detailed analysis of not only the market conditions and structures found in pinpointed host countries of their interest, but much more must they make profound and accurate analys

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2011 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: A, State University of New York at Stony Brook, course: BA, language: English, abstract: Different market entry strategies can be used to enter a new market, these strategies include mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures, exporting, Greenfield project, strategic alliances, franchising/licensing and whole subsidiary ownership (Janssen 2004, p. 556). Some of the factors that influence the choice of a market entry strategy include price localization, trade barriers, competition, export subsidies and localized knowledge (Grunig & Morschett 2012, p. 151). Globalization and foreign direct investments have been vital in global expansion of companies (Hill 2005, p. 67). This study suggests licensing as a market entry strategy that could be adopted by Rodl & Partner in its entry to South Africa (Rodl & Partner, 2012). South Africa is one of the well known markets that have well developed accounting, auditing and consulting industry and this makes the selection a suitable one for Rodl & Partner. South Africa enjoys a stable and developing economy and this has been a key attraction for foreign investors.

As a consequence, creating a global competitive advantage has become a key strategic issue for many companies. Crafting a global strategy requires making decisions about which strategy elements can and should be globalized and to what extent.

Book excerpt: China has hundreds of thousands of businessmen and women who are driving the fastest sustained national economic growth rate of any country in world history. After decades of being held back by their country's socialist history, the Chinese people are moving forward with the force of water bursting from a broken steam pipe. The intensity of their aspirations, joined with the plans of the government and the presence of the country's hundreds of millions of ordinary people, means that future developments in China will surpass even those of the recent past—and in an extraordinary manner. At the same time, the integration of Chinese business with global business is accelerating, meaning that no major enterprise or financial institution can avoid doing business with China, any more than they can avoid the United States. Success in China, either for a local entrepreneur or a global multinational, is now enough to transform a company's performance worldwide. This book explains the changing nature of China's business environment, its increasingly complex relationship with the rest of the world, and the global business. The China Strategy is uniquely positioned to help business leaders and other observers make sense of China. It provides a holistic view of the Chinese business environment, looking at consumers, competitive enterprises, the government, integration with the rest of the world, and the ways these elements interact. This book is thus the first to lay out a framework that puts together the different (and seemingly contradictory) trajectories of China's future. It shows how change is taking place in non-linear fashion: some factors (like Chinese entrepreneurship) are expanding exponentially, while others (like the value of China's labor arbitrage) may be reaching a plateau. And it shows how to build and execute a global business strategy in light of these changes. During the next few years, successful American and European businesses may have to move to become global businesses, incorporating China in particular into their core identity because it is the fastest-growing world hub of economic activity. They will need to become familiar with the Chinese financial systems, as well as its consumer markets, innovation capabilities, and labor force. These leaders could have no better guide than The China Strategy.

This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to formalize the optimal choice of market entry strategy for an individual multinational enterprise (MNE) from a dynamic perspective. It is argued that incorporating a suitable treatment of irreversibility, uncertainty and flexibility related to an MNE's investment decision gives further insights into the expansion, dissolvement, and optimal timing of international joint ventures (IJVs). In most cases, the initial entry strategy serves as a platform allowing the firm to make subsequent investments to exploit host-country advantages and capabilities. We allow for this by taking a three-step expansion strategy explicitly into account. The evolutionary process of the value of the foreign direct investment can be interpreted as a compound complex chooser option. The results suggest that uncertainty, size of equity share and future investment/divestment opportunities play an important role when it comes to transit from export to the first phase of the foreign direct investment commitment. The paper underscores the importance of modeling the dynamics of market entry and helps to refine the application of real options in the alliance context by providing a closed-form solution in continuous time to value the overall strategic flexibility.

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Communications - Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing, Social Media, grade: 4.5, , course: Management Sciences // Marketing, language: English, abstract: This paper examined issues surrounding foreign entry decisions. Essentially, the paper determined why and how a company makes a decision to enter a foreign market. The study was descriptive and data were sourced from various books, trade journals, publications and internet sites etc. The study revealed that foreign market entry strategy is an important strategic decision for international business units. The choice of foreign market entry strategy is to be made very cautiously as it has long-term implications, and it cannot be easily reversed. The study found that the future growth of international business unit depends upon the right mode of entry into foreign market. As revealed in the study there are three main modes of entry into foreign market namely: Trade mode, investment mode and contractual entry mode. In trade route, the entry in foreign market is made through exports. In investment mode, the subsidiary units are set up in the foreign market. This mode is also called foreign direct investment mode. In contractual entry mode, technological collaboration agreements are made with the business units of host nation. In this mode, technical skills/managerial skills are provided by business unit in parent country to business units in host country. Besides these three main strategies for entry into foreign markets. The choice of the appropriate strategy depends upon various factors like availability of resources, level of risk, tariff and non-tariff barriers imposed by other nations, transportation cost, infrastructure facilities, vision of management, restrictions on inflow/outflow of foreign investment. A key conclusion in the study is that there are different motives for an entry on a foreign market. The different motives that are stated in the study have common denominator which is that they can all lead to increased profit in the long run. The study suggests that in order to make an effective foreign market entry decision, firms and international business practitioners should apply the foreign-market-entry-model. They should also highlight those factors that have been found to be of most importance while entering a foreign market.
