Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a study made on erosion control blankets with respect to their aging and longevity. Erosion control blankets have been relied upon increasingly in recent times replacing the old and traditional methods for protecting areas from erosion by storm water and other factors. But what can be an estimated duration for which a given set of blankets can be functional in channel erosion control. This research is done with the ultimate aim of understanding whether these erosion control blankets can stay in place and be conducive to some vegetation growth, which is said to be the most reliable measure for long-lasting erosion control. Seven erosion control blankets, consisting of natural, synthetic and composite types, were put to actual use for erosion control for 3 years in a field. After 3 years these used materials were cut from the field for conducting the tests. Unused blankets of the same brands were obtained. Index tests were conducted on both used and unused material specimens to measure the erosion control properties. All materials experienced a significant amount of strength loss after use. The natural materials show 80% strength loss, while the composite and synthetic materials were tested to have around 50%strength losses after being put to use for 3 years. Thus it can be observed that the composite and synthetic materials have a decent amount of life where erosion control is concerned. Other tests also proved that composite materials can be relied upon for erosion control to a reasonable extent, and the research goal was achieved.
Book Synopsis Geosynthetics in Filtration, Drainage and Erosion Control by : R.M. Koerner
Download or read book Geosynthetics in Filtration, Drainage and Erosion Control written by R.M. Koerner and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geosynthetics can, and have, played a pivotal role in providing the primary functions of filtration, drainage and erosion control. Within each category this book counterpoints the design, testing and performance of the various materials against one another. The facilitation of filtration by a number of different woven and non–woven geotextiles is discussed. Design is centred around a balance between open voids [for adequate permeability] and closed voids [for proper soil retention]. This balance is compromised by long term clogging or soil loss from either the upstream soil particles or by the nature of the permeating fluid. This is a major focal area of the book. One solution to excessive filter clogging is to open up the geotextile's voids and allow sediments and micro–organisms in the permeating fluid to pass through. The challenge then becomes the design and potential clogging of the drain. The drainage aspect of geosynthetics is the second focal area. Erosion control is closely related to both filtration and drainage. The tremendous design problems, and equally large repair problems on all types of facilities, are addressed. Highway slopes, earth dams, landfill covers and solid waste daily covers are a few common situations.
Book Synopsis Performance of Flexible Erosion Control Materials by :
Download or read book Performance of Flexible Erosion Control Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of evaluation procedures to determine the field performance of flexible erosion control materials were conducted at the TTI/TxDOT Hydraulics and Erosion Control Laboratory. The objectives of the study were to determine the effect of flexible materials on the germination and growth of native grasses, as well as to determine the effectiveness of the materials to prevent erosion on typical steep, roadside slopes before the establishment of permanent vegetation. Researchers repeated the vegetation establishment and soil retention portions of the evaluations on two soil types with the option for two different slopes, according to the manufacturer's preference. Researchers conducted the vegetation establishment evaluation by hydraulically applying the seed and fertilizer mixture on the plot, installing the erosion control product according to the manufacturer's published literature, and collecting data periodically throughout the growing season. The apparent vegetative cover of each plot is averaged for every round of data collection. Results include the four rounds of vegetation coverage data or the final round of vegetation data, depending on the analysis level. Researchers calculate the minimum amount of vegetation establishment from statistically analyzing the data set for significant difference ranges to the analysis level. Researchers conducted the erosion control portion of the study by artificially simulating various rainfall events with the greatest probability of occurrence during highway construction periods. The total dry sediment weight is calculated to achieve the total sediment loss per one hundred square feet of plot area. The report averages the results of each series of simulated design storms for each round of data collection. The resultant of total sediment loss is established by averaging the totals of each round of design storm values. Researchers establish the maximum amount of sediment loss from statistically analyzing the data set for significant difference ranges according to the analysis level.

Book Synopsis Evaluation of Erosion Control Blanket Properties and Test Criteria for Specification and Design by : Danny Sommer
Download or read book Evaluation of Erosion Control Blanket Properties and Test Criteria for Specification and Design written by Danny Sommer and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 151 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A research project to investigate the product approval, design process, and ongoing product evaluation of erosion control blankets (ECBs) for the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) was conducted. An overview of federal and state environmental construction laws was performed noting the significance of ECBs on construction sites. Standardized erosion control testing, product approval, and design processes utilized by other state departments of transportation and those recommended by the National Transportation Product Evaluation Program were researched for further insight to typical ECB applications. A field investigation was established to study the effectiveness of two ECBs on a MoDOT construction site. MoDOT completed construction sites, which utilized ECBs, were also included in the investigation to evaluated how well vegetation was sustained and ongoing blanket degradation following site acceptance in accordance with the MoDOT Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP). In addition to field site evaluations, surveys were developed and administered to record contractor and MoDOT employee ECB experiences and identify common problems and successful practices using ECBs. Recommendations for ECB approval procedures and a design process for conditions representative of Missouri were developed using insight gained through the study of common ECB product acceptance and design, the field site investigation, evaluation of completed construction sites, and the surveys of ECB experiences. The National Transportation Product Evaluation program's (NTPEP) ASTM standardized testing was recommended as the basis for product approval. For ECB design, the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) was recommended and used to establish minimum performance requirements for both product acceptance and design. Digital maps were developed using ArcGIS for Missouri's representative hydrologic and geologic conditions for use in the RUSLE. The ECB approval procedures and design process, which were developed specifically for the state of Missouri, are recommended for implementation into the MoDOT Engineering Policy Guide (EPG). An ongoing product evaluation system was also developed for ECBs to document field performance and assist in identifying ECBs that should be removed from the approved products list.
