Book excerpt: A dark chapter of art history dragged into the light. Painter and provocateur, Mark Flood's career blazed like an erratic comet thru the bubblicious art world of the early twenty-first century. Now his brother Clark Flood tells the story of Mark's struggles of the 1990s, before he hit the big time. Meticulously researched, Mark Flood in the 1990s recounts accusations of Satanism, confiscation of work by the local police, and a decision to sell advertising space on the surface of paintings. We learn about a profusion of false identities and Flood's innovative use of surrogates for public appearances. Finally we retrace the artist's prolific output as he spirals down into depression and fantasies of suicide. This arc unexpectedly culminates in the discovery of the lace painting technique that would make him rich. Mark Flood in the 1990s reproduces hundreds of paintings and documents, many never published before, as well as vintage photographs of studios and exhibits.

Book excerpt: Mark Flood: Gratest Hits is the first survey of the work of Houston-based artist Mark Flood (born 1957) dating from the 1970s to 2016. Described by The New York Times as a "painter and punk propagandist," Flood has, despite remaining barely visible at the museum level, maintained an active and influential career for decades in painting and, increasingly, exhibition practice, producing work characterized by deep wisdom and trenchant humor. With Gratest Hits, Flood--an artist so absolute in his judgments that one 2012 painting featured the words "Whore Museums, Gutless Collectors, Blind Dealers, So-Called Artists" emblazoned on it--finally gets the monographic museum treatment in his hometown, and a career-spanning catalogue to boot. This fully illustrated, full-color volume features texts by Carlo McCormick, Alison Gingeras, El Topito, Scott Indrisek and Bill Arning, the exhibition's curator and director of the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston.

Book excerpt: Collecting Mark Flood's irreverent reinventions of the protest sign, from his 1992 series Houston-based artist Mark Flood's (born 1957) 1992 protest signs were first deployed outside the Republican National Convention of that year. With cardboard, foam core upcycled from the Menil Collection and vintage stencils gifted by a relative of Jackson Pollock, Flood's signs display ironic slogans beside silkscreened images of Reagan, Bush and Schwarzenegger.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Early Chinese ideas about the construction of an ordered human space received narrative form in a set of stories dealing with the rescue of the world and its inhabitants from a universal flood. This book demonstrates how early Chinese stories of the re-creation of the world from a watery chaos provided principles underlying such fundamental units as the state, lineage, the married couple, and even the human body. These myths also supplied a charter for the major political and social institutions of Warring States (481–221 BC) and early imperial (220 BC–AD 220) China. In some versions of the tales, the flood was triggered by rebellion, while other versions linked the taming of the flood with the creation of the institution of a lineage, and still others linked the taming to the process in which the divided principles of the masculine and the feminine were joined in the married couple to produce an ordered household. While availing themselves of earlier stories and of central religious rituals of the period, these myths transformed earlier divinities or animal spirits into rulers or ministers and provided both etiologies and legitimation for the emerging political and social institutions that culminated in the creation of a unitary empire.

Book excerpt: A pulse-pounding thrill ride, where a teen girl must participate in a breathtaking race to save her brother's life--and her own. Time is slipping away. . . . Tella Holloway is losing it. Her brother is sick, and when a dozen doctors can't determine what's wrong, her parents decide to move to the middle of nowhere for the fresh air. She's lost her friends, her parents are driving her crazy, her brother is dying--and she's helpless to change anything. Until she receives mysterious instructions on how to become a Contender in the Brimstone Bleed. It's an epic race across jungle, desert, ocean, and mountain that could win her the prize she desperately desires: the Cure for her brother's illness. But all the Contenders are after the Cure for people they love, and there's no guarantee that Tella (or any of them) will survive the race. The jungle is terrifying, the clock is ticking, and Tella knows she can't trust the allies she makes. And one big question emerges: Why have so many fallen sick in the first place? Victoria Scott's breathtaking novel grabs readers by the throat and doesn't let go.

Violent geologic events have ravaged the Earth since time began, spanning the vast eons of our planet's existence. These seismic phenomena have scored their marks in rock strata and been reflected in fossil records for future humanity to excavate and ponder. For most of the preceeding 78,000 years Homo sapiens simply observed natural climate upheaval. One hundred years ago, however, industrialization stunningly changed the rules, so that now most climate change is driven by us. Fire, Storm and Flood is an unflinching photographic record of the epic effects of a violent climate, from the earliest extinction events to the present, in which we witness climate chaos forced by unnatural global warming. It uses often emotional and moving imagery to drive home the enormity of climatic events, offering a sweeping acknowledgment of our crowded planet's heartbreaking vulnerability and show-stopping beauty.
