Download or read book Canada and the Changing Arctic written by Franklyn Griffiths and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2011-11-10 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Global warming has had a dramatic impact on the Arctic environment, including the ice melt that has opened previously ice-covered waterways. State and non-state actors who look to the region and its resources with varied agendas have started to pay attention. Do new geopolitical dynamics point to a competitive and inherently conflictual “race for resources”? Or will the Arctic become a region governed by mutual benefit, international law, and the achievement of a widening array of cooperative arrangements among interested states and Indigenous peoples? As an Arctic nation Canada is not immune to the consequences of these transformations. In Canada and the Changing Arctic: Sovereignty, Security, and Stewardship, the authors, all leading commentators on Arctic affairs, grapple with fundamental questions about how Canada should craft a responsible and effective Northern strategy. They outline diverse paths to achieving sovereignty, security, and stewardship in Canada’s Arctic and in the broader circumpolar world. The changing Arctic region presents Canadians with daunting challenges and tremendous opportunities. This book will inspire continued debate on what Canada must do to protect its interests, project its values, and play a leadership role in the twenty-first-century Arctic. Forewords by Senator Hugh Segal and former Minister of Foreign Affairs and of National Defence Bill Graham.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'This Scientific Letter discusses how the blue economy can inform Canada's security and defence at home, focusing specifically on the implications of a greater RCN presence in the Arctic. First, Canada, as a maritime nation, has adopted a series of policies that compose its ocean strategy. While Canada still lacks a blue economy strategy, existing policies promote some of the principles key to sustainable economic growth in the maritime environment. Second, the new defence policy mandates the CAF and the RCN to protect Canada's waters inthe face of environmental changes and resulting increase in human activities'--page 2.

Book excerpt: "The Canadian Forces Maritime Warfare Centre was tasked by the Directorate of Maritime Strategy, on behalf of the Director General Maritime Force Development, to develop an Arctic Maritime Strategic Operating Concept(SOC) that would articulate potential future roles for maritime forces in the Arctic within a Canadian Forces/Government of Canada context. This Memorandum paper contributes to the development of an Arctic Maritime SOC by assessing the physical aspects of the Arctic environment with a particular emphasis on existing data, research, and literature on the impact of climate change in the north. It is conducted as an area study to facilitate the Maritime Staff's baseline of knowledge and understanding of the Arctic environment in a potentially climate-changed world. The Memorandum also examines Canadian Arctic maritime security and defence issues over the next two and a half decades and beyond, highlights those areas considered relevant to Arctic maritime operations, and identifies some future maritime defence requirements in the Arctic. Research was based on an analysis of open source literature, electronic sources, published and unpublished reports and papers, and interviews. The broad conclusion to be drawn from the Memorandum is that regardless of the possible impact of climate change in the north, there are important operational considerations to take into account when deploying to/in the Arctic."--Abstract.
Book Synopsis Canadian Oceans Policy by : Don M. McRae
Download or read book Canadian Oceans Policy written by Don M. McRae and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with Canada's oceans management policies since the conclusion of the 1982 Convention of the Law of the Sea. That Convention set out a jurisdictional framework for the management of the world's oceans, but it did not provide states with precise guidance on all the issues that can arise. As a state with one of the world's longest coastlines, Canada was one of the principal beneficiaries under the 1982 Convention regime. A study of Canadian policy is particularly significant, as Canadian oceans management places in relief many of the difficult questions yet to be resolved.

Download or read book Lock, Stock, and Icebergs written by Adam Lajeunesse and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2016-01-15 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1988, after years of failed negotiations over the status of the Northwest Passage, Brian Mulroney gave Ronald Reagan a globe, pointed to the Arctic, and said “Ron that’s ours. We own it lock, stock, and icebergs.” A simple statement, it summed up a hundred years of official policy. Since the nineteenth century, Canadian governments have claimed ownership of the land and the icy passageways that make up the Arctic Archipelago. Unfortunately for Ottawa, many countries – including the United States – still do not recognize these as internal Canadian waters. Crucial to understanding the complex nature of Canadian Arctic sovereignty is an understanding of its history. Lock, Stock, and Icebergs draws on recently declassified Canadian and American archival material to chart the origins and development of Canadian Arctic maritime policy. Uncovering decades of internal policy debates, secret negotiations with the United States, and long-classified joint-defence projects, Adam Lajeunesse traces the circuitous history of Canada’s Arctic maritime sovereignty.

Book Synopsis The Evolving Arctic by : Department of Defense
Download or read book The Evolving Arctic written by Department of Defense and published by . This book was released on 2017-04-29 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arctic environment is in a state of flux and the U.S. government must be prepared to handle the evolution and capitalize on the opportunities. Once barren and desolate, the Arctic is slowly coming to life with industry and commerce brought about by receding ice conditions. Along with that comes the need for a comprehensive and actionable Arctic policy. The other Arctic nations that ring the North Pole are quickly adapting to the shifting Arctic. Unlike the U.S., they have established Arctic policies, are implementing plans to operate in the region, and taking advantage of the opportunities that this new frontier has to offer. The U.S. framework is the National Strategy for the Arctic Region. The plan is short on detail and aspirational in nature. It lacks clear direction and authority. The U.S. has yet to commit to its role as an Arctic nation. The U.S. Arctic lacks infrastructure such as a deep-water port, a joint military base, and additional heavy icebreaker assets. Additionally, there is no lead agency that has authority and funding to carry out U.S. Arctic objectives. Under the current state of affairs, the U.S. is vulnerable to security, economic, and sovereignty issues in the Arctic. CHAPTER I * INTRODUCTION * A. RESEARCH QUESTION * B. PROBLEM SPACE * C.
