Book excerpt: Campi and Pessina, architects from the canton Ticino in Switzerland, attained international fame through their villas constructed in Tessin in the spirit of rationalist architecture. They also first achieved renown through their conversion of Castello Montebello into a museum with a language of form that reveals their highly sensitive and original treatment of historical architectural works. This book focuses on the following central topics: modern handling of historical works of architecture, residential dwellings (from the villa to publicly-assisted housing), as well as public buildings and urban design projects. This publication represents the first comprehensive compilation on the complete works produced by Campi and Pessina over a period of more than thirty years. This book is richly illustrated and includes a complete list of the architects' projects. Texts examining the work of these architects are written by Werner Oechslin, Fred Koetter, Paolo Fumagalli, and Wolfgang B?hm.

Book excerpt: After graduating from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich), Mario Campi opened his own architecture office in Lugano in 1962. From 1977 to 1984, he was heavily involved with teaching activities at several American universities including Cornell and Harvard, then after returning to Z rich he became Professor for Architecture at the ETH Zurich in 1985. Campi's buildings are stark in form and elegantly composed, characterised by their concentration on the structural essentials, devoid of superfluity. Although his buildings are functional and very much of today, they also evoke a sense of serenity reminiscent of classical architecture. In this respect Campi is one of the major exponents of Italian rationalism. This monograph presents Campi's recent buildings and projects, highlighting his analytical approach. The projects featured include residential buildings in Lugano and the recently completed buildings for the chemistry faculty at the ETH Zurich.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pulsation in Architecture highlights the role of digital design as the catalyst for a new spatial sensibility related to rhythmic perception. It proposes a novel critical reception of computational architecture based on the ability of digital design to move beyond mere instrumentality, and to engage with core aspects of the discipline: the generative engine of digital architecture reinvigorates a discourse of part-to-whole relationships through the lens of rhythmic affect. There is a paradigm shift in spatial perception due to the intense use of computational techniques and the capacity to morph massive amounts of data in spatial patterns; rhythm plays a pivotal role in the articulation of the topology of buildings, generating the atmospheric character that induces moods and throbbing sensations in space. Pulsation introduces the fundamental animate capacity of living form and reshapes our perception of architectural space across the multiple scales of a project, from digital inception to fabrication. An emerging thread of rhythmic sensibility loosely binds a survey of contemporary design practices, including contributions by Peter Eisenman, Jeff Kipnis, Greg Lynn, UNStudio, Preston Scott Cohen, Reiser + Umemoto, Asymptote, Ali Rahim, Hernan Diaz Alonso, Ruy Klein, Gage / Clemenceau, NOX, Evan Douglis Studio, kokkugia, and MONAD Studio.

Book excerpt: In recent years AI has been experiencing a deep internal debate on the appropriateness of the symbolic-based paradigm and all of its consequences. While various symbolic representation schemes, as well as their integration, have been proposed, their limitations have continuously pushed researchers for improved versions or entirely new ones. New viewpoints such as the complex dynamic-based approach with neural nets can be regarded simply as new problem solving techniques with specific properties. Under this perspective, what seems to be important is the ability to combine heterogeneous representation and problem-solving techniques. Research on heterogeneous, intelligent systems goes hand in hand with research on specific problem solving methods and paradigms, therefore representing their conceptual and practical glueing element. The papers contained in this proceedings are just one instance of such awareness activity in the international scientific community.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An anthology of the pivotal theoretical texts that have defined architecture culture in the late twentieth century. In the discussion of architecture, there is a prevailing sentiment that, since 1968, cultural production in its traditional sense can no longer be understood to rise spontaneously, as a matter of social course, but must now be constructed through ever more self-conscious theoretical procedures. The development of interpretive modes of various stripes—post-structuralist, Marxian, phenomenological, psychoanalytic, as well as others dissenting or eccentric—has given scholars a range of tools for rethinking architecture in relation to other fields and for reasserting architectures general importance in intellectual discourse. This anthology presents forty-seven of the primary texts of architecture theory, introducing each with an explication of the concepts and categories necessary for its understanding and evaluation. It also presents twelve documents of projects or events that had major theoretical repercussions for the period. Several of the essays appear here in English for the first time. Contributors Diana Agrest, Stanford Anderson, Archizoom, George Baird, Jennifer Bloomer, Massimo Cacciari, Jean-Louis Cohen, Beatriz Colomina, Alan Colquhoun, Maurice Culot, Jacques Derrida, Ignasi de Solá-Morales, Peter Eisenman, Robin Evans, Michel Foucault, Kenneth Frampton, Mario Gandelsonas, Frank Gehry, Jürgen Habermas, John Hejduk, Denis Hollier, Bernard Huet, Catherine Ingraham, Fredric Jameson, Charles A.
