Book excerpt: Excerpt from Marine Mammals of the Southeastern United States Coast and the Gulf of Mexico The marine mammal fauna of the Southeastern United States coast and the Gulf of Mexico consists almost entirely of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises), although pinnipeds (seals and sea lions) and sirenians (manatees) also are represented. This paper only considers cetaceans and pinnipeds. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Marine Mammals of the North-Western Coast of North America: Described and Illustrated, Together With an Account of the American Whale-Fishery Being on the coast Of California in 1852, when the gold-fever raged, the force of circumstances compelled me to take command of a brig, bound on a seal ing, sea-elephant, and whaling voyage, or abandon sea-life, at least temporarily. The Objects Of our pursuit were found in great numbers, and the Opportunities for studying their habits were so good, that I became greatly interested in col leeting facts bearing upon the natural history of these animals. Reference to the few books devoted to the subject soon convinced me that I was at work in a department in which but little definite knowledge existed. This was true even of the whales, the best known Of this class; and I was soon led to believe that, by diligent Observation, I should be able to add materially to the scanty stock of infor mation existing in regard to the marine mammals of the Pacific Coast. I was the more encouraged to pursue these investigations, because, among the great number Of intelligent men in command Of Whaling-ships, there was no one who had contrib uted anything Of importance to the natural history of the Cetaceans; while it was Obvious that the opportunities Offered for the study Of their habits, to those prae tically engaged in the business Of whaling, were greater than could possibly be enjoyed by persons not thus employed. The chief Object in this work is to give as correct figures Of the different Species of marine mammals, found on the Pacific Coast of North America, as could be Obtained from a careful study of them from life, and numerous measurements after death, made whenever practicable. It is also my aim to give as full an account Of the habits Of these animals as practicable, together with such facts in reference to their geographical distribution as have come to my knowledge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annotated Checklist of the Marine Mammals of the Gulf of California Walker er al. (1986) studied 152 skulls from the eastern North Pacific (6 from Baja California waters north of N, 112 from southern California waters, 32 - 37 N, and 34 from north of 37 N), finding modal differences between animals from the extreme north ern (above 37 N) and extreme southern (below 32 N) portions of the area. Vidal (1991) documented the existence of osteological materials from eight specimens from western Baja California (norte) and 15 from western Baja California Sur (the southernmost from Isla Magdalena, about latitude N). These specimens have not been studied in detail. To date, no osteological materials have been collected in the Gulf. Book excerpt: This reprint of a 19th century classic of American zoological study and the single most important historical work on marine mammals of the West Coast. Scammon sets out to give readers detailed technical information about different species of marine mammals. Though he does this with the eye of a whaler out to hunt these animals, his descriptions strangely have all of the playfulness and sensitivity of a naturalist. The text is divided into three parts: a species-by-species account of whales and dolphins (including physical descriptions, a discussion of their habits, and also a quantification of their economic value), a similar section for other sea mammals (sea elephants, sea lions, seals, sea otters and walruses), and then a thorough discussion of the history of whaling

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extinct and Vanishing Mammals of the Old World On account of its length the publication committee decided to publish Extinct and Vanishing M ammals in two volumes. The late Dr. Glover M. Allen, in a large measure, prepared the volume on Extinct and Vanishing Mammals of the Western Hemisphere, including also certain marine mammals of all the oceans. The New World volume of more than 600 pages was published in 1942 as Special Publication No. 11 of the American' Committee for International Wild Life Protection. It was dedicated to the late Dr. J ohn C. Phillips. The Committee appreciates the fact that ever-changing condi tions require additions and supplements to the data in these volumes in order to bring them up to any given date. Nevertheless, keep ing the information current will be a small. Task compared with the historical study, the verification of references, the biblio graphical research, and the evaluation and compilation of informa tion carried out by Harper and Allen in their pioneer work on the (recently) extinct and vanishing mammals of the Old World and the Western Hemisphere. Book excerpt: Excerpt from California Mammals The area treated of in this volume is strictly California and that part of the Pacific Ocean properly belonging to California. All the mammals described are known to have been found with in the State or within sight of its shores. The number of species and subspecies proves to be very large. This is accounted for partly by the large extent and great latitudinal length of the State, but more by the very great variety of climate within the State, greater than occurs in any other State of the Union; grading all the way from the subtropical region of the Colorado Valley and Desert to the arctic climate of the eternal snows on the summits of the Sierra Nevada. No general work covering the mammals of this State has been published since 1857, when Baird's Vol. VIII of the Pacific Railroad' Reports was issued. This did not contain the marine mammals, the bats nor man. A great advance in our knowledge of the land mammals has occurred within the last fifteen years, and some of the material obtained in this time has not yet been critically examined by systematic experts, hence we may expect further additions to the present known species, as well as more or less revision of the nomenclature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Marine Mammals: In the Anatomical Museum of the University of Edinburgh, Part I.-Cetacea, Part II-Sirenia, Part III-Pinnipedia This descriptive Catalogue of the Marine Mammals in the Anatomical Museum of the University has been compiled with the view of enabling a public, wider than that which can visit the Museum, to have the means of knowing the extent of the collection, and the opportunities which it affords for the study of the anatomy of these mammals. In the number and variety of species it ranks after the British Museum and the Museum of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, and is, I believe, third in the United Kingdom in the number of specimens of Cetacea and Pinnipedia which it contains; whilst, in species of Cetacea frequenting Scottish waters, it is larger and more complete than either of those important collections. The Museum has acquired its examples of Cetacea mainly from the proximity of Edinburgh to the Firth of Forth and the North Sea, and the not infrequent opportunities occurring for the examination and preservation of specimens of whales stranded on the adjoining coast. Since the end of the seventeenth century, when Sir Robert Sibbald and Sir Andrew Balfour formed in Edinburgh their joint Museum, naturalists living in that city have availed themselves of these opportunities, and in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries the capture of many specimens was recorded. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extinct and Vanishing Mammals of the Western Hemisphere, Vol. 11: With the Marine Species of All the Oceans May 1, 1942, is likely to be a significant date in the history of conservation, for on that day the "Convention on Nature Protection and Wildlife Preservation in the American Republics" came into effect for the seven American countries, including the United States, that had deposited ratifications with the Pan American Union. Twelve other Republics have now signed the Treaty, and it is hoped that their ratifications are soon to follow. Publication of the present volume, devoted to the extinct and vanishing mammals of the New World, including certain marine mammals of all the oceans, is therefore particularly timely. Its author, Dr. Glover M. Allen, of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University, who died on February 14, 1942, was one of the great naturalists of his day. His profound knowledge of mammals and birds was the result not only of a life-time study in museums but also of intimate observation of animals in their native habitats - in Africa, Australia, the Caribbean, and South America, as well as in many parts of his own country. The final preparation of this report was one of the last projects that Dr. Allen completed before his untimely death. We know that he thought of it as one might think of the clearing of a new trail into a virgin forest. It will, indeed, be the opening of the way to a wider understanding of the genuine need for international cooperation, if the vanishing wildlife of the Americas is to be preserved for the benefit of future generations. This volume is dedicated to Dr. Allen's friend Dr. John C.Phillips, founder and first chairman of the American Committee for International Wildlife Protection. It was largely due to Dr. Phillips's vision that in May 1936 a project for a comprehensive study of the recently extinct and vanishing mammals of the world was undertaken under the auspices of the American Committee. Information on this subject had never been assembled, and it was felt that such a report, if carefully prepared, would be invaluable to the work of the Committee in helping to determine those species of mammals most urgently in need of protection and, at the same time, to estimate factors that might have caused the extinction of species. This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Land and Sea Mammals of Middle America and the West Indies, Vol. 4 In my previous volume, the Synopsis of the Mammals of North America and the Adjacent Seas, the field covered was from the northern boundary of Mexico to and including the Arctic Ocean. The present work is supposed to contain all the Mammals of the remaining portion of the North American continent and the contiguous seas, from the northern boundary of Mexico to the Province of Cauca, South America, including the coast islands, as well as those of the Bahamas and the West Indies whose fauna is not completely related to that of South America. In the general treatment of the named forms the method adopted in the previous work has been slightly elaborated, and brief statements of the habits of the animals contained in the various families, and sometimes in the genera, have been given, together with the English name for each species or race, and keys for genera, subgenera, species, and races whenever these were sufficiently numerous to make such analytical tables desirable. For a very large number of the species and races it is well understood that no English names exist, and these had to be manufactured for the occasion, and are practically of little assistance for the recognition of the different animals; but Latin names appear to be distasteful to a small number of the laity, and only those in the vernacular are satisfactory, and it is to aid these that this departure from the previous plan has been made. Numerous named species of many genera of Mammals have so close a resemblance to each other, both in their outward covering and cranial characters, that often it is very difficult to distinguish one from the other, and for them Keys are probably less satisfactory as a means of determining the various forms than for any other class of animals; but it seems that there is a desire for such aids, which to many have become necessary, and therefore an effort has been made to meet this need, which it is hoped will serve the purpose intended. The illustrations throughout the volume comprise not only various representations of the cranium of some selected species of nearly every genus and subgenus, as in the Synopsis, but in addition a figure is given of some species either of a family or genus, or possibly both, as the peculiarities of the animals seemed to require for a better comprehension of their appearance in life. To those unfamiliar with the diversified forms of the many mammals dwelling within the limits embraced in this volume, these figures may be of assistance, and enable them more easily to recognize the animals whose descriptions are given in the text.
