Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recognizing the increasing importance of the role of gravity and the geoid, and con sidering the substantial synergistic effects which result from close cooperation, the International Gravity Commission and the International Geoid Commission, both scientific bodies of the International Association of Geodesy, decided to hold a Joint Meeting under the common topic "Gravity and Geoid" in Graz, Austria, from Sept. 11 - 17, 1994. The earth's gravity field is increasingly attracting the attention of the geosciences for many reasons. As a response of the earth's internal mass distribution, it significantly helps us to understand the structure of the earth and its dynamics. On the other hand, the earth's gravity field controls the orbits of satellites and is of paramount im portance for accurate orbit prediction'. For geodesy the geoid, representing the gravity field, serves as a unique height reference surface. It is the link between satellite-derived positions and useful geodetic coordinates of utmost precision. For oceanography, the offset of the dynamic ocean surface from the geoid is the signal which bears important information about ocean circulation patterns.

Book excerpt: These Proceedings include the written version of papers presented at the IAG International Symposium on "Gravity, Geoid and Earth Observation 2008". The Symposium was held in Chania, Crete, Greece, 23-27 June 2008 and organized by the Laboratory of Geodesy and Geomatics Engineering, Technical University of Crete, Greece. The meeting was arranged by the International Association of Geodesy and in particular by the IAG Commission 2: Gravity Field. The symposium aimed at bringing together geodesists and geophysicists working in the general areas of gravity, geoid, geodynamics and Earth observation. Besides covering the traditional research areas, special attention was paid to the use of geodetic methods for: Earth observation, environmental monitoring, Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS), Earth Gravity Models (e.g., EGM08), geodynamics studies, dedicated gravity satellite missions (i.e., GOCE), airborne gravity surveys, Geodesy and geodynamics in polar regions, and the integration of geodetic and geophysical information.

Book excerpt: This symposium continued the tradition of mid-term meetings held between the joint symposia of International Geoid and Gravity Commissions. This time, geodynamics was chosen as the third topic to accompany the traditional topics of gravity and geoid. The symposium thus aimed at bringing together geodesists and geophysicists working in the general areas of gravity, geoid and geodynamics. Besides covering the traditional research areas, special attention was paid to the use of geodetic methods for geodynamics studies, dedicated satellite missions, airborne surveys, geodesy and geodynamics of arctic regions, and the integration of geodetic and geophysical information.

Book excerpt: Precise and continuous tracking with multi-satellite systems of aircraft andlow flying satellites, accurate airborne measurement of gravity and gravity gradients, and satellite gradiometry have fundamentally changed our view on the de- termination of the Earth's gravity field. The papers in this volume describe these techniques in detail. The ideas are presentedas complementary, and are used to develop new theoretical concepts of gravity field analysis. Computatio- nal models using these techniques are also discussed and are tested in simulations. The papers presented in this volume are the result of an IAG symposium held during the XX General Assembly of the Inter- national Union of Geodesy and Geophysics in Vienna, Austria, August 11-24, 1991.

Book excerpt: For the past three decades, it has been possible to measure the earth's static gravity from satellites. Such measurements have been used to address many important scientific problems, including the earth's internal structure, and geologically slow processes like mantle convection. In principle, it is possible to resolve the time-varying component of the gravity field by improving the accuracy of satellite gravity measurements. These temporal variations are caused by dynamic processes that change the mass distribution in the earth, oceans, and atmosphere. Acquisition of improved time-varying gravity data would open a new class of important scientific problems to analysis, including crustal motions associated with earthquakes and changes in groundwater levels, ice dynamics, sea-level changes, and atmospheric and oceanic circulation patterns. This book evaluates the potential for using satellite technologies to measure the time-varying component of the gravity field and assess the utility of these data for addressing problems of interest to the earth sciences, natural hazards, and resource communities.

Book excerpt: This book offers extensive information on the operation of gravimeters, including airborne, marine and terrestrial ones, and on the associated data processing methods such as optimal and adaptive filtering, smoothing, structural and parametric identification. Further, it describes specific features relating to the study of the gravitational field in remote areas of the Earth, with the necessary modifications of equipment and software for all-latitude applications. Findings from gravity studies in such remote areas are also presented. Advanced methods for studying the gravitational field, including those for simultaneous determination of gravity anomalies and deflection of the vertical are described and analyzed in detail. Gravity gradiometers and cold atom gravimeters are also covered. Last but not least, the book deals with the development of Earth’s gravity field models and their various applications, including map-aided navigation, with a special attention to model accuracy estimation. Gathering research findings and best practice recommendations relating to Earth’s gravity field measurements, collected by a team of researchers and professionals, the book offers a unique guide for engineers, scientists and graduate students dealing with terrestrial, marine and airborne gravimetry. It will also help other specialists involved in developing and using navigation systems in practice, including designers of gravimetric equipment and navigators.

Book excerpt: This book gathers invited contributions from active researchers to provide an up-to-date overview of the geological setting of the Red Sea. It discusses aspects ranging from historical information to modern research in the Red Sea, and presents findings from rapidly advancing, emerging fields. This semi-enclosed young ocean basin provides a unique opportunity to study the development of passive continental margins in order to examine the current status of that region. In addition to studies on the Sea itself, it includes those from related fields on the littoral zone. The book is of interest to geoscientists and non-specialists alike.

Book excerpt: "Gravity data have many scientific applications, both on the surface of the Earth and in space. The data are used for computing gravitational models, which aid those searching for oil, gas, and minerals. Alone or in combination with other data (such as satellite, astrogeodetic, or geophysical), gravity data are used to calculate deflection of the vertical components, geoidal heights, gravity disturbance components, and datum shifts for orienting local geodetic datums to an Earth-centered world geodetic system. The data are also used for calibrating inertial navigation and guidance systems"--Introduction.

Book excerpt: This explanation of the nature of gravity currents (Bouyancy-driven flows in fluids) and their manifestations in the atmosphere, the oceans and the earth sciences, fills a serious gap in the literature. It will also benefit a great many workers in other scientific disciplines, who will be able to apply the principles of gravity currents to their own specialist subject. Much of the work has not previously been published, and the publishers know of no other book with a similar range of information. The author's own work in the development of a variety of laboratory experiments designed to offer an understanding of the physical processes, is made very clear to the reader, illustrating a range of phenomena which are important in areas as diverse as aircraft safety, the distribution of airborne pests, and airborne pollution. The study of oceans ranges from the Gulf Stream to river fronts in lakes and fjords, where the formation of a front is of biological importance. In a section on avalanche flows, avalanches of snow, rock, and volcanic eruptions, are also shown to be gravity currents of vital significance. Factors influencing the behaviour of gravity currents are reviewed. The topics are dealt with in numerous laboratory experiments, and only simple mathematics is included. A final chapter reviews the growing subject of numerical models of gravity currents.
