Book excerpt: Essential for all vessels who wish to enter an Emission Control Area, are at berth in a United Kingdom port, or a UK passenger ship operating in UK waters and controlled waters or any other passenger ship which calls at a port in the UK. The Merchant Shipping (prevention of Air Pollution from Ships) Regulation 2008, as amended, require that the master of a ship to which the regulations apply make a record to demonstrate compliance for any ship using separate fuel oils and make a record of any fuel changeover operation. The master of a ship to which the regulations apply is required to make a record: (a) in the case of a UK ship, in a log book in the format prescribed in Appendix 6 to Merchant Shipping Notice 1819 (M+F); (b) in the case of any other ship, in a ship's log book. This new edition introduces new engine models that will be most commonly installed in ships over the next decade, as well as the latest legislation and pollutant emissions procedures. Since publication of the last edition in 2009, a number of emission control areas (ECAs) have been established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in which exhaust emissions are subject to even more stringent controls. In addition, there are now rules that affect new ships and their emission of CO2 measured as a product of cargo carried. - Provides the latest emission control technologies, such as SCR and water scrubbers - Contains complete updates of legislation and pollutant emission procedures - Includes the latest emission control technologies and expands upon remote monitoring and control of engines

Book excerpt: Problems attributed to marine fuel quality are increasing. Important factors influencing fuel quality are the type of crude oil refined and the refining processes it undergoes. Conversion steps such as visbreaking and catalytic (cat) cracking concentrate the less desirable characteristics in bunker fuel oil. Therefore, proper shipboard treatment of marine residual fuels is essential for reliable and efficient engine performance.

Book excerpt: Substantially revising and updating the classic reference in the field, this handbook offers a valuable overview and myriad details on current chemical processes, products, and practices. No other source offers as much data on the chemistry, engineering, economics, and infrastructure of the industry. The Handbook serves a spectrum of individuals, from those who are directly involved in the chemical industry to others in related industries and activities. It provides not only the underlying science and technology for important industry sectors, but also broad coverage of critical supporting topics. Industrial processes and products can be much enhanced through observing the tenets and applying the methodologies found in chapters on Green Engineering and Chemistry (specifically, biomass conversion), Practical Catalysis, and Environmental Measurements; as well as expanded treatment of Safety, chemistry plant security, and Emergency Preparedness. Understanding these factors allows them to be part of the total process and helps achieve optimum results in, for example, process development, review, and modification. Important topics in the energy field, namely nuclear, coal, natural gas, and petroleum, are covered in individual chapters. Other new chapters include energy conversion, energy storage, emerging nanoscience and technology. Updated sections include more material on biomass conversion, as well as three chapters covering biotechnology topics, namely, Industrial Biotechnology, Industrial Enzymes, and Industrial Production of Therapeutic Proteins.
