Book excerpt: MCDP 1 WARFIGHTING Since Fleet Marine Force Manual 1, Warfighting, was first published in 1989, it has had a significant impact both inside and outside the Marine Corps. That manual has changed the way Marines think about warfare. It has caused energetic debate and has been translated into several foreign languages, issued by foreign militaries, and published commercially. It has strongly influenced the development of doctrine by our sister Services. Our current naval doctrine is based on the tenets of maneuver warfare as described in that publication. Current and emerging concepts such as operational maneuver from the sea derive their doctrinal foundation from the philosophy contained in Warfighting. Our philosophy of warfighting, as described in the manual, is in consonance with joint doctrine, contributing to our ability to operate harmoniously with the other Services.

Book excerpt: Marine Corps Warfighting Publication MCWP 3-10, MAGTF Ground Operations November 2017 Marine Corps Warfighting Publication (MCWP) 3-10, MAGTF Ground Operations, provides the doctrinal basis for the planning and execution of ground combat operations within the Marine air-ground task force (MAGTF). It establishes a common reference on how the ground combat element (GCE) plans, task-organizes, trains, deploys, and is employed for operations. This publication is the keystone for all ground combat-oriented publications, but it does not provide detailed tactics, techniques, and procedures for specific ground combat organizations. It incorporates validated lessons learned from the last 13 years of conflict and operations and provides the link between the tactics, techniques, and procedures of subordinate publications and Service-level doctrine. This publication is intended for Marine Corps leaders of every military occupational specialty and is recommended for commanders and planners assigned to the joint force. It concentrates primarily on the GCE's warfighting capabilities as the MAGTF's decisive maneuver force in the conduct of ground combat, including maritime expeditionary operations and subsequent sustained combat operations. Its contents are relevant to all elements of the MAGTF. This publication supersedes MCWP 3-10, Ground Combat Operations, dated 4 April 1995.

Book excerpt: This United States Marine Corps manual, Marine Corps Warfighting Publication MCWP 5-10 Marine Corps Planning Process August 2020, was first published in January 2000 as MCWP 5-1. Since that time, Marine Corps forces at all echelons of command have used the Marine Corps Planning Process (MCPP) to conduct the range of military operations. The use of design over the last decade suggests that design is more than conceptual planning which establishes aims, objectives, and intentions. A more critical role of design is to promote understanding of the current situation as a basis for broad solutions. While design establishes the nature of the problem, the inclusion of a design methodology in this revision aids commanders, staffs, and planners in determining the problem set and a framework for solving them. The publication's design methodology reflects a belief that sufficient complexity can exist at all levels of warfare and across the conflict continuum to include tactical situations that will require an understanding of the set of problems that hinder movement from the current state to the desired state of an operational environment. Among all critical factors bearing on military operations, time is defining. The MCPP helps Marines win the time fight through a promotion of intuitive understanding, commander's intent, and the use of task and purpose when operating inside an established paradigm. Another time aid is the center of gravity techniques used to determine which of the actions that address a problemset will be decisive. These visions of decisiveness inform the convergence of combat powerthrough main and supporting efforts and resource priorities. The publication focuses primarily on commanders with staffs; however, any Marine required to plan operations should know the planning process well enough to determine the problem, envision a desired state, and develop options for achieving that state. This publication supersedes MCWP 5-10, Marine Corps Planning Process, dated 24 August 2010. MCWP 5-10 implements North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Standardization Agreement (STANAG) 2014, NATO Formats for Orders and Designation of Timing, Locations, and Boundaries.

This publication describes a leadership philosophy that speaks to who we are as Marines. It is about the relationship between the leader and the led. It is also about the bond between all Marines that is formed in the common forge of selfless service and shared hardships. It's in this forge where Marines are hardened like steel, and the undefinable spirit that forms the character of our Corps is born. It draws from shared experiences, hardships, and challenges in training and combat. Leading Marines is not meant to be read passively; as you read this publication, think about the material. You should reflect on, discuss, and apply the concepts presented in this publication. Furthermore, it is the responsibility of leaders at all levels to mentor and develop the next generation of Marine leaders.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine Corps Warfighting Publication MCWP 6-10 (Formerly MCWP 6-11) Leading Marines 2 May 2016 Since our 30th Commandant, General Carl E. Mundy, first published Leading Marines in 1995, it's had a positive impact throughout our Marine Corps. It's generated spirited discussions about what it means to be a Marine, and how to lead Marines, and it is the base document for the leadership curriculum in all our resident schools. Our philosophy of leadership, as described in this publication, is in consonance with our rich and storied past. That said, it was time to update Leading Marines. As Marines, we lead by example, often instilling values using stories. During the last 13 years of continuous combat, Marines have added to our legacy, some of their stories superbly illustrating our leadership philosophy. You'll recognize many of those stories herein. We speak in this publication about those timeless attributes that form the soul of our Corps . . . those attributes that carried Marines forward through the wheat fields of Belleau Wood to the strongholds of Fallujah and Marjah. Additionally, our core values, leadership traits, and leadership principles are given added emphasis in this edition. In the end, the intent of this revision is to better describe our timeless leadership philosophy. It was in this spirit that Leading Marines was revised. Simply put, this publication describes the leadership philosophy that distinguishes the U.S. Marine Corps. This publication is not meant MCWP 6-11 Warfighting to be a "how to" guide on leadership, rather, it provides broad guidance in the form of concepts and values. Additionally, Leading Marines is not designed as a reference manual; it is meant to be read from cover to cover. Its three chapters have a natural progression. Chapter 1 describes our ethos--who we are and what we do for our Nation. Building on that understanding, Chapter 2 covers the foundations of Marine Corps leadership. Chapter 3 then addresses overcoming the challenges our leaders face. Once you read this publication, I charge you to discuss it with your peers, subordinates, and seniors. As General Mundy laid out in his foreword to the original publication in 1995, leading Marines is the most important responsibility in our Corps, and thus we must educate the heart and mind to prevail on the battlefield and in the barracks, in war and in peace. Notice: This is a paperback book version of the "Marine Corps Warfighting Publication MCWP 6-10 (Formerly MCWP 6-11) Leading Marines 2 May 2016". Full version, All Chapters included. This publication (current update) is available (Electronic version) in the official website of the United States Marines Corps. This book is properly formatted and printed as a perfect sized copy 8.5x11". * The version of this publication is as described above (this article is updated after each new edition). disclaimer: "The use or appearance of United States Marine Corps publications on a non-Federal Government website does not imply or constitute Marine Corps endorsement of the distribution service."
