Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before World War I, the U.S. Marine Corps had no general officer corp. From 1899 to 1914, three line officers served in the office of commandant as temporary generals, and though their policies shaped the Corps during this formative period, none was ever permanently promoted above the rank of colonel. With the Naval Personnel Act of 1916, the rank of brigadier general was established and 39 Marines were promoted from 1916 through 1936. Among them, five received the Navy Medal of Honor, 14 were awarded the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism, seven were suspended from duty as non-judicial punishment and three were found guilty by courts-martial. In the years just prior to the Marine's mobilization against Japan in World War II, 14 of these generals were still on active duty and headed the Corps' expansion from its peacetime strength of 17,248 to a wartime strength of 474,680. This book tells the story of the generals who gave the modern Marine Corps its vision, molded its forces, capabilities and culture, and commanded its soldiers in combat, at sea and in garrison.

This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the story of the 68 Marine colonels who served during the modern Marine Corps' formative period from the War with Spain (1898) to the end of the Small Wars (1934), but who did not become generals. Looking below the surface or "under the hood" of published Marine history, the author found a cornucopia of fascinating, intriguing, even unimaginable stories about Marine colonels who could not be found in any standard Marine history book. He explored why some Marine colonels became generals while others did not. The lessons might prove useful to the new generation of Marine officers. Included in this book are some well-known Marine Corps legends like Medal of Honor recipient "Hiking Hiram" Bearss and Frederic "Dopey" Wise. There are also lesser-known Marine heroes like Constantine Perkins, a hero of the 1899 Samoa expedition; George Thorpe, who commanded the Marine guard for the first U.S. diplomatic expedition to Ethiopia in 1903; Julius Turrill, who distinguished himself in France in 1918; and Alexander Williams, who barely survived the "Long March" on Samar in 1901. There are distinguished Marine field commanders like Lincoln Karmany, who was denied flag rank because he divorced to marry a younger woman; Franklin Moses, who died at Vera Cruz before he could become a general; and Thomas Treadwell and William McKelvy, who both commanded battalions, regiments, and brigades in the West Indies campaigns. Standard Marine histories provide glimpses of these officers, but this book provides "the rest of the story." Their stories deserve to be recognized as part of the Marine Corps heritage. The book includes appendices listing the commanders of Marine brigades, regiments, separate battalions, and posts; fleet marine officers; and graduates of the Army and Navy War Colleges and Army Service Schools during the period.

Based on his career military experience, Butler frankly discusses how business interests commercially benefit (including war profiteering) from warfare. He had been appointed commanding officer of the Gendarmerie during the United States occupation of Haiti, which lasted from 1915 to 1934.

Butler won renown as a Marine battlefield hero, campaigning in most of America's foreign military expeditions from 1898 to the late 1920s. He became the leading national advocate for paramilitary police reform. Upon his retirement, however, he renounced war and imperialism and devoted his energy and prestige to various dissident and leftist political causes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike the relative uniformity of conventional warfare, the peculiarities of small wars prevent a clear definition of rules and roles for military forces to follow. During the small wars era, aviation was still in its infancy, and the US military had only recently begun battling in the skies. The US Marine Corps recognized that flexibility and ingenuity would be critical to the successful conduct of small wars and thus employed the new technology of aviation. In Biplanes at War: US Marine Corps Aviation in the Small Wars Era, 1915–1934, author Wray R. Johnson provides a riveting history of the marines' use of aviation between the world wars, a time in which young soldiers were volunteering to fly in combat when flying itself was a dangerous feat. Starting with Haiti in 1915, Biplanes at War follows the marines' aviation experiences in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, China, and Nicaragua, chronicling how marines used aircraft to provide supporting fires (e.g., dive-bombing) to ground troops in close contact with irregular opponents, evacuate the sick and wounded, transport people and cargo (e.g., to assist humanitarian operations), and even support elections in furtherance of democracy. After years of expanding the capabilities of airplanes far beyond what was deemed possible, the small wars era ended, and the US Marines Corps transitioned into an amphibious assault force. The legacy of the marines' ability to adapt and innovate during the small wars era endures and provides a useful case study. Biplanes at War sheds light on how the marines pioneered roles and missions that have become commonplace for air forces today, an accomplishment that has largely gone unrecognized in mainstream histories of aviation and air power.
