Parmi tant d'auteurs, aux confins de la littérature spirituelle et de l'inspiration profane, Jean Desmarets de Saint-Sorlin (1600-1676), écrivain abondant, bien en cour sous Richelieu, mais quelque peu tortueux et sulfureux, si on s'en tient à la présentation qu'en fit Henri Bremond dans son Histoire littéraire du sentiment religieux, a consacré à sainte Madeleine un poème qui reste une référence notable dans la querelle des Anciens et des Modernes - une tentative audacieuse pour donner à la langue française son titre d'excellence en matière d'écriture du merveilleux chrétien. Le père Bruckberger nous raconte de sa manière incomparable l'histoire de Marie-Madeleine dont il nous donne, comme dans Marie, mère de Jésus-Christ, une image originale et neuve: celle de la femme orgueilleuse dont le destin bascule, qui se soumet d'un coup et devient l'une des plus proches de Jésus.
