Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Apparition of Splendor looks in depth at Marianne Moore's elaborately constructed, multi-dimensional poems of her 1950s-60s celebrity phase, in which, cross-dressed as George Washington, she presented her poetry as part of a comedic performance. This biography shows how her poems challenge the highbrow hierarchy of art and invite the readers into the process of making meaning out of their daily lives.

Download or read book Holding On Upside Down written by Linda Leavell and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2013-11-05 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marianne Moore (1887-1972) has been heralded as America's greatest poet of the modernist movement. Her volume Collected Poems won the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1952 and the Bollingen Prize in 1953. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Moore eventually found her way to New York with her mother whom she continued to live with until her mother passed, a familial devotion so intense that William Carlos Williams complained that it was 'pathological' and prevented her from marrying any 'literary guys'. Moore never married. Linda Leavall is the first biographer to be granted access and freedom to quote from Moore's archives. More than just a standard biography, Leavall re-examines Moore's body of work to complement and enlighten the biography. Through Moore's poems and letters from T. S. Eliot, William Carlos Williams, and many others, Leavall has written what is sure to be the definitive biography of Moore.

Book Synopsis Ekphrasis in American Poetry by : Sandra Lee Kleppe
Download or read book Ekphrasis in American Poetry written by Sandra Lee Kleppe and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-19 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ekphrasis in American Poetry: The Colonial Period to the 21st Century provides a sample of the chronological range and stylistic variety of ekphrastic poetry, or poetry that engages in various ways with different types of visual art, including pictographs, paintings, moving panoramas, daguerreotypes, photographs, landscape, and more. The volume shows how ekphrasis has been a part of American poetry from its inception, and that as many American men as women have produced work in this genre. The book opens with an overview chapter followed by an examination of American ekphrastic poems during the formative Colonial period where Europe, Africa, and Indigenous America met in encounters that are depicted in art and literature. It closes with two chapters on Native American poetry that consider how American landscapes serve as ekphrastic prompts for personal and collective experiences. In between are contributions on men and women poets and artists who have engaged with ekphrasis in a variety of ways from different periods. As such, American ekphrasis emerges as a genre that has implications far beyond the Eurocentric versions of the canon that have hitherto been discussed in the critical literature on the topic.
