Book excerpt: Tiré du site Internet de Revolver: "A compilation of 23 titles in one single publication! Join us in this literary journey throughout different topics and subject matters: archaeology, contemporary gardening, magic, history of technology, mysticism, tourist guides, autobiography, archival techniques, monuments in motion, and more ! The aim of "Never Odd or Even" is to develop collaborative projects in which the distribution is not a final stage, but a central part of the process. Distribution understood as a way to occupy or invade different contexts. In each project, multiples and diverse objects work as performative devices, the importance is how are they disseminated and how they can generate a territory. Marres, Center for Contemporary Art (12 Dec. 2004 - 23 Jan. 2005) ; ed. Mariana Castillo Deball; with contributions by Gabriela Aguileta, Bina Choi, Ricardo Cuevas, Hubert Czerepok, Daniela Franco, Heidi Lynn Ganshaw, Alexander Komarov, Irene Kopelman, Susanne Krieman, Alexandra Leykauf, Raimundas Malasaukas, Miguel Monroy, Brian O'Connell, David Puig, Manuel Raeder, Sebastian Romo, Steve Rushton, Gabriela Torres Mazuera (English)."

Book excerpt: Breaking the Mold of Convention Presenting installations, sculptures, objects, and paintings from Mexico, Cuba, West Africa, Israel, Bulgaria, Russia, South Korea, and Japan, rounded out by extraordinary works from the U.S. and Europe, this selection from the Dohmen Collection features artists from countries that did not typically register on "Western" art radars until fifteen years ago. It was the seminal documenta 11 (2002), curated by a team led by Okwui Enwezor, that ushered in a departure from the contemporary art world's entrenched geopolitical ideas. This book showcases a treasure that has long been ahead of its time yet did not attract public attention: the private collection of Werner Dohmen, a physician in Aachen. It includes works by Mariana Castillo Deball, Wim Delvoye, Jimmie Durham, Diango Hernández, Rodney McMillian, Pavel Pepperstein, Nora Turato, Haegue Yang, and other artists who continue to provoke audiences, ask probing questions, and prompt fresh thinking.

Book excerpt: A bold new spatial perspective on modern sculpture, with 800 color images of work by artists including Henry Moore, Lygia Clark, Anish Kapoor, and Ana Mendieta. This monumental, richly illustrated volume from ZKM | Karlsruhe approaches modern sculpture from a spatial perspective, interpreting it though contour, emptiness, and levitation rather than the conventional categories of unbroken volume, mass, and gravity. It examines works by dozens of twentieth- and twenty-first-century artists, including Hans Arp, Marcel Duchamp, Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth, Lygia Clark, Anish Kapoor, Olafur Eliasson, Ana Mendieta, Fujiko Nakaya, Tomás Saraceno, and Alicja Kwade. The large-scale book contains over 800 color images. Negative Space comes out of an epic exhibition at ZKM, and volume editor Peter Weibel (Chairman and CEO of ZKM) takes a curatorial approach to the topic. The last exhibition to deal comprehensively with the question “What is modern sculpture?” was at the Centre Georges Pompidou in 1986. Weibel and ZKM pick up where the Pompidou left off, examining sculptures not as figurative, solid, and self-contained monoliths but in terms of open and hollow spaces; reflection, light, shadow; innovative materials; data; and the moving image. Weibel puts advances in science, architecture, and mathematics in the context of avant-garde sensibilities to show how modern sculpture significantly deviates from the work of the past. Texts in the volume include an introduction and twelve chapters written by Weibel with contributions by cocurators as well as facsimiles and reproductions of artist-authored manifestos.

Book excerpt: For a major new presentation in 2019, Whitechapel Gallery is taking as a model its groundbreaking 1956 exhibition 'This is Tomorrow', an event which is indelibly linked to the institution's history. Organised and developed by architect, writer and sculptor Theo Crosby, 'This is Tomorrow' featured 37 artists, architects, designers and writers who worked together in 12 small groups. In the catalogue, Lawrence Alloway introduced the exhibition as "devoted to the possibilities of collaboration", the results of which "appear to be setting up a programme for the future." 'Is This Tomorrow?' will also feature 12 groups of contemporary architects, artists and other cultural practitioners to highlight the potential of collaboration, to address key issues we face today and to offer a vision of the future. Both UK and international participants will explore subjects from conflict and warfare, economic inequality, migration and resource scarcity, to education, labour, trade and technology, comparing and contrasting the ideas of the original 'This is Tomorrow' artists and architects whose concerns with communication theory, mass culture and the vernacular reflected their associations with British Constructivism and the Independent Group.00Exhibition: Whitechapel Art Gallery, London, UK (14.02.-12.05.2019).

Book excerpt: "This unique volume illustrates and discusses in detail more than 160 extraordinary fine and decorative art works of the colonial Andes, including examples of the intricate Inca weavings and metalwork that preceded the colonial era as well as a few of the remarkably inventive forms this art took after independence from Spain. An international array of scholars and experts examines the cultural context, aesthetic preoccupations, and diverse themes of art from the viceregal period, particularly the florid patternings and the fanciful beasts and hybrid creatures that have come to characterize colonial Andean art."--Jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Sprache: Deutsch/Englisch

Book excerpt: Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-2005) was one of the most innovative and irreverent British artists of the 20th century. Considered the 'godfather' of Pop Art', his powerful sculptures, prints and collages challenged mid-century British modernism by drawing on mass culture, science fiction and industrial design. Accompanying the first major international retrospective of Paolozzi's work since 1975, this publication presents a fresh and comprehensive overview of his work, highlighting not only his unique position as one of Britain's most dynamic, versatile and pugilistic artists, but also the relevance of his work today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An in-depth focus on artist and filmmaker Emilija Škarnulytė's Sirenomelia, a cosmic portrait of one of mankind's oldest mythic creatures--the mermaid. A mermaid dives through the Cold War ruins of nuclear submarine tunnels above the Arctic Circle in this in-depth focus on Sirenomelia by artist and filmmaker Emilija Skarnulyte, a poetic and scientific meditation on the artist's iconic cinematic installation exploring post-human mythologies, future archaeology, and the invisible structures that enfold us, from the cosmic and geologic to the ecological and political. With essays, interviews, and excerpts from Andrew Berardini, Roland Penrose, Nadim Samman, and Alison Sperling. Set in far-northern territories where cold, Arctic waters meet rocky escarpments on which radio telescopes record fast-traveling quasar waves, Sirenomelia links humans, nature, and machines and posits possible post-human mythologies. Shot in an abandoned Cold-War submarine base in Olavsvern, Norway, Sirenomelia is a cosmic portrait of one of mankind's oldest mythic creatures--the mermaid. The artist, performing as a siren, swims through the decrepit NATO facility while cosmic signals and white noise traverse the entirety of space, reaching its farthest corners, beyond human impact.
