Book excerpt: Derived from Maria Miesenberger's private family album the darkly, evocative images of the Sverige / Schweden series create a narrative of epical proportions. Simultaneously sinister and sweet, they disclose and conceal, confront and evade their apparent content--the dreams and nightmares from the memory banks of a childhood. By re-presenting her father's images of her childhood in Austria and Sweden, Miesenberger transforms these images to another order of speech. The persons photographed are no longer recognized as individuals but are set afloat as dark hollow shapes in the image. As the detail and nuances are darkened they become trapdoors in the pictorial surface, leaving us alone with our projections and associations. In these innocent looking images of the small nuclear family an inherited memory is hidden but present, the father's childhood in Austria in the presence of war and genocide is hiding behind the shadows.

Book Synopsis Suspended Conversations by : Martha Langford
Download or read book Suspended Conversations written by Martha Langford and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2021-09-15 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Suspended Conversations Martha Langford shows how photographic albums tell intimate and revealing stories about individuals and families. Rather than isolate the individual photograph, treat albums as texts, or argue that photography has supplanted memory, she demonstrates that the photographic album must be taken as a whole and interpreted as a visual and verbal performance that extends oral consciousness. Exhibiting a collection of photographic travelogues, memoirs, thematic collections, and family sagas compiled between 1860 and 1960 and held by the McCord Museum of Canadian History, this second edition includes a revised and expanded preface along with new photographs of the Notman albums. Printed in colour throughout, the enhanced material draws out the distinct nuances and details of each album, giving them new life to tell their stories. Albums are treasured by families, collected as illustrations of the past by museums of social history, and examined by scholars for what they can reveal about attitudes and sensibilities, but when no one is left to tell the tale, the intrigue of the album becomes a puzzle, a suspended conversation. Langford argues that oral consciousness provides the missing key. Correlating photography and orality, she explains how albums were designed to work as performances and how we can unlock their mysteries. A fascinating glimpse of the preoccupations of previous centuries, Suspended Conversations brings photography into the great conversation of how we remember and how we send our stories into the future.

Book Synopsis Using Japanese Paper for Digital Printing of Photographs by : Carl-Evert Jonsson
Download or read book Using Japanese Paper for Digital Printing of Photographs written by Carl-Evert Jonsson and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-05-17 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using Japanese paper on digitally printing photos can yield tremendous results for photographers who are interested in experimenting with new methods. But beware: The common concept of how photographs should look will be challenged if you decide to use this technique. Carl-Evert Jonsson shares his experiences using the experimental technique in this book. After using Japanese papers (washi) for paintings and collages, he started to use the papers for his photos. This technique is not an alternative to classic film-based photography. Ink is injected from a cartridge in a printer connected to a computer then the image is reproduced on printable washi paper. Darkroom facilities are not needed. All you need is a computer, printer, washi, and photos. The liveliness of washi fibres gives a softer result, and washi is more absorbent than Western papers, with the ink appearing integrated rather than sitting on the printed surface. Find out how to use a method that will give new life to photos with the insights in this unique photography book.
