Book excerpt: Margaret Lennox sold her home in Washington, D.C. and moved to Marfa, Texas, hoping to escape the insanity, the crime, and the traffic of our nation’s capital. Marfa was a place that welcomed artists, and Margaret hoped to find a quiet life there. But the Marfa Lights were not the only mysterious thing to worry about in this small Texas town. As soon as she moved into her renovated cottage on Austin Street, the bodies began to pile up. A mysterious woman was murdered and thrown from a train behind Margaret’s house. She discovered one of the woman’s shoes in the brush, and the shoe was full of money. Her neighbors and a neighbor’s cat were poisoned. What was happening in this sleepy, remote place that was supposed to be her respite from crime and stress? Margaret’s curiosity moved her to investigate, with the help of her friend Augustus Gemini, the disturbing events that were occurring in Marfa. The Texas Rangers did not appreciate Margaret’s involvement. Meanwhile, Darnell Jackson, formerly known as Zeus Noonday Miracle, decides that finding Fountain, a long-lost piece of sculpture from 1917, is the key to making him a rich man. He sets out on a quest to track down this famous and long-lost work of art by Marcel Duchamp. As his search for the illusive Fountain becomes more frustrating, his vagabond life deteriorates, and he becomes desperate enough to kill. Possession of the most influential work of art of the twentieth century remains just out of Darnell’s grasp as he hunts down his prey in Marfa.

Book excerpt: Eyewitnesses to the mysterious lights around Marfa, Texas report that they may appear out of nowhere, move up and down, change colors, merge, separate, and even chase cars. What are they — UFOs, atmospheric anomalies, optical illusions, or something else? For over 100 years, these so-called Marfa lights have baffled experts and amateurs alike — until now. Mysteries of the Marfa Lights Revealed is the first book to present a detailed examination of light phenomena and their applicability to mysterious light displays seen throughout the world — including those of the famous Marfa lights in the Big Bend region of southwest Texas. Scientist Robert Wagers and his wife Judy explore the history, science, geography, and meteorology contributing to these mysterious light phenomena. Their entertaining book traces the history of the mysterious lights from the earliest reports in the late 1800s up to modern times. Elements of science are combined with first-hand accounts of unexpected light behavior to unravel the truth. Written in a conversational style that assumes only basic scientific knowledge, Mysteries of the Marfa Lights Revealed is for everyone who is curious about mysterious lights no matter where they appear on earth. The book is exceptionally well illustrated. Thirty-three magnificent color pictures graphically illustrate the subjects being discussed, and provocative vignettes introduce each chapter. Eight color maps present unique details of the Marfa environs as well as the Big Bend region of Texas.

Book Synopsis The Myth and Mystery of UFOs by : Thomas E. Bullard
Download or read book The Myth and Mystery of UFOs written by Thomas E. Bullard and published by University Press of Kansas. This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When United Airlines workers reported a UFO at O'Hare Airport in November 2006, it was met with the typical denials and hush-up that usually accompany such sightings. But when a related story broke the record for hits at the Chicago Tribune's website, it was clear that such unexplained objects continued to occupy the minds of fascinated readers. Why, wonders Thomas Bullard, don't such persistent sightings command more urgent attention from scientists, scholars, and mainstream journalists? The answer, in part, lies in Bullard's wide-ranging magisterial survey of the mysterious, frustrating, and ever-evolving phenomenon that refuses to go away and our collective efforts to understand it. In his trailblazing book, Bullard views those efforts through the lens of mythmaking, discovering what UFO accounts tell us about ourselves, our beliefs, and the possibility of visitors from beyond. Bullard shows how ongoing grassroots interest in UFOs stems both from actual personal experiences and from a cultural mythology that defines such encounters as somehow "alien"-and how it views relentless official denial as a part of conspiracy to hide the truth. He also describes how UFOs have catalyzed the evolution of a new but highly fractured belief system that borrows heavily from the human past and mythic themes and which UFO witnesses and researchers use to make sense of such phenomena and our place in the cosmos. Bullard's book takes in the whole spectrum of speculations on alien visitations and abductions, magically advanced technologies, governmental conspiracies, varieties of religious salvation, apocalyptic fears, and other paranormal experiences. Along the way, Bullard investigates how UFOs have inspired books, movies, and television series; blurred the boundaries between science, science fiction, and religion; and crowded the Internet with websites and discussion groups. From the patches of this crazy quilt, he posits evidence that a genuine phenomenon seems to exist outside the myth. Enormously erudite and endlessly engaging, Bullard's study is a sky watcher's guide to the studies, stories, and debates that this elusive subject has inspired. It shows that, despite all the competing interests and errors clouding the subject, there is substance beneath the clutter, a genuinely mysterious phenomenon that deserves attention as more than a myth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do some men become convinced—despite what doctors tell them—that their penises have, simply, disappeared. Why do people across the world become convinced that they are cursed to die on a particular date—and then do? Why do people in Malaysia suddenly “run amok”? In The Geography of Madness, acclaimed magazine writer Frank Bures investigates these and other “culture-bound” syndromes, tracing each seemingly baffling phenomenon to its source. It’s a fascinating, and at times rollicking, adventure that takes the reader around the world and deep into the oddities of the human psyche. What Bures uncovers along the way is a poignant and stirring story of the persistence of belief, fear, and hope.
