Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence of global assembly plants is closely linked to the creation of a global female industrial labor force. Women and Work in Mexico's Maquiladoras examines this larger process in Mexico, where--despite a century of industrialization and a tradition of well-paid, highly organized, male workers--the maquiladora factories have turned to predominantly female labor. Exploring this dramatic shift, this book convincingly demonstrates how gender restructuring in workplaces and households has become a crucial element in the reorientation of Mexican development. The author compares Mexico's new industrial system with its historical antecedent and documents federal policy changes that have resulted in distinct patterns of gender, unionization, household form, and social welfare. Rich in ethnographic detail, the book uses the voices of workers themselves to provide an intimate look at how daily lives have been transformed--in ways that could not have been foreseen--by the national and international processes shaping the country's industrial transition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published originally as La flor mas bella de la maquiladora, this beautifully written book is based on interviews the author conducted with more than fifty Mexican women who work in the assembly plants along the U.S.-Mexico border. A descriptive analytic study conducted in the late 1970s, the book uses compelling testimonials to detail the struggles these women face. The experiences of women in maquiladoras are attracting increasing attention from scholars, especially in the context of ongoing Mexican migration to the country's northern frontier and in light of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This book is among the earliest accounts of the physical and psychological toll exacted from the women who labor in these plants. Iglesias Prieto captures the idioms of these working women so that they emerge as dynamic individuals, young and articulate personalities, inexorably engaged in the daily struggle to change the fundamental conditions of their exploitation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress does not come easily to the maquiladoras. These foreign-owned assembly plants have moved southward from the border into Sonora and Chihuahua, giving rise to the concept of "desert capitalism." However, the plants have not necessarily brought about the improvements in the lives of workers that had been so hopefully expected. Sociologist Kathryn Kopinak here examines the maquiladora industry in Nogales, Sonora, and explores various questions concerning how it is changing with NAFTA and other attempts at regional integration. Focusing on the auto-parts industry, Kopinak observes that few maquiladoras have taken steps toward more sophisticated technology and innovative labor practices anticipated by the "second wave" hypothesis of modernization. She argues instead that the apparent advances have not benefitted the overwhelming majority of Mexican employees by increasing their wages or involving them in the workplace. Women workers in particular are segmented at the bottom of the job ladder. Kopinak provides information on facilities in both Nogales and the town of Imuris to offer a balanced perspective on border and inland maquiladoras. Desert Capitalism draws on interviews with workers about their daily lives in both their home and adopted communities and on interviews with Mexican and U.S. plant managers. Community surveys, newspaper advertisements, and government records are other important sources of data. It also reviews and synthesizes literature published only in Spanish and utilizes creative quantitative statistical techniques. The book thus marks a significant study of people's lives that seeks to contribute to the understanding of ongoing continental economic reorganization, and it holds important lessons for scholars of economics, anthropology, political science, history, sociology, women's studies, and regional planning.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A defining feature of Japan's emergence as a global economic superpower has been Japanese firms' establishment of thousands of affiliate operations in North America, Europe, and Asia. Despite the tremendous importance of this development, there have been surprisingly few articles published on the management of Japanese operations abroad, and even fewer attempts to collect and make sense of this scholarship. Schon Beechler and Allan Bird remedy this situation with Japanese Multinationals Abroad: Individual and Organizational Learning, a unique collection of essays from an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars. The book opens with an introduction by the editors, followed by a chapter analyzing the evolution of research on multinational enterprises in general and on Japanese multinational corporations in particular. The remainder of the book is divided into three sections. In the first section the contributors address the impact of Japanese management practices on individuals and groups, analyzing the interactions between Japanese expatriates and local employees that lead to negotiated "third cultures." The second section shifts to the business unit level, examining the ways in which Japanese firms attempt to transfer or substantially modify home country management philosophies, policies, and practices to fit the local affiliate. The final section, focused on the corporate level, deals with the impact of subsidiary management activities on the organization as a whole. The contributors address various aspects of organizational learning related to the transfer of managerial knowledge from subsidiary to parent or from one overseas affiliate to another. Japanese Multinationals Abroad: Individual and Organizational Learning addresses a set of issues that are critical for both international business researchers and practicing managers. It not only provides an integrated picture of how Japanese employees and organizations learn to adapt and prosper, it presents an clear lessons for all multinational corporations, regardless of their national origins.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stemming from an interdisciplinary conference sponsored by Culture Club: The Cultural Studies Scholars’ Association that included scholars from various disciplines and from around the world, this volume collects the work of graduate students and junior faculty which all examine the meaning of cultural scholarship in an ever-changing and increasingly global milieu. These voices, which often become marginalized and go unheard, represent what we see as the futures of interdisciplinary academic work in the humanities. The conference and this book are opportunities for scholars of diverse backgrounds and disciplines to come together and engage in a real dialogue with one another. Bringing disparate thoughts on politics, film, television, history, policy, and literature together counters the pressures pushing individuals to take political, religious, scholarly, and ideological sides. Through the efforts represented here, we gain a distanced, yet engaged, view on the many threads that bind us together and the forces that seek to separate us. Looking at this volume, the reader encounters many different approaches, from critical analysis of individual texts to autoethnography. The contributors and compilers of this book do not place these in separate sections or in any hierarchy but rather wish that all of these appear on an equally vital level that displays the ways in which each of the subjects and approaches might open up a piece of culture in a way that draws attention to the connections between them all.
