The work includes discussion of the concept of alpine plants, the distribution of the Scandinavian alpine plants, the history of the alpine flora, the ecology of alpine plants, and the species.

Book Synopsis Distribution Maps of Norwegian Vascular Plants by : Reidar Elven
Download or read book Distribution Maps of Norwegian Vascular Plants written by Reidar Elven and published by Fagbokforlaget. This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distribution Maps of Norwegian Vascular Plants marks the end of a long-lasting project, presenting distribution maps and explanatory texts for more than 200 taxa of vascular plants with an eastern or northeastern distribution pattern in Norway. All basic information (including herbarium specimens, literature, and lists) has been critically evaluated. For each taxon, the earliest records, habitat (ecology), and distribution within Norway are commented upon, and the relationship to distribution patterns in neighboring countries is discussed. Although much basic documentation is due to pioneers in the late 18th century and 19th century, substantial new information has been provided during the production of this volume, which also has many comments on solved and unsolved taxonomical problems and problems related to the immigration (or possibly survival) history connected to the taxa. The book will be essential for botanists dealing with plant taxonomy and phytogeography in boreal and subarctic environments.
Book Synopsis Alpine Biodiversity in Europe by : Laszlo Nagy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United Nations Conference on the Environment and Development (UNCED), held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, spawned a multitude of pro grammes aimed at assessing, managing and conserving the earth's biological diversity. One important issue addressed at the conference was the mountain environment. A specific feature of high mountains is the so-called alpine zone, i. e. the treeless regions at the uppermost reaches. Though covering only a very small proportion of the land surface, the alpine zone contains a rela tively large number of plants, animals, fungi and microbes which are specifi cally adapted to cold environments. This zone contributes fundamentally to the planet's biodiversity and provides many resources for mountain dwelling as well as lowland people. However, rapid and largely man-made changes are affecting mountain ecosystems, such as soil erosion, losses of habitat and genetic diversity, and climate change, all of which have to be addressed. As stated in the European Community Biodiversity Strategy, "the global scale of biodiversity reduction or losses and the interdependence of different species and ecosystems across national borders demands concerted international action". Managing biodiversity in a rational and sustainable way needs basic knowledge on its qualitative and quantitative aspects at local, regional and global scales. This is particularly true for mountains, which are distributed throughout the world and are indeed hot spots of biodiversity in absolute terms as well as relative to the surrounding lowlands.
Book Synopsis Lapland: A Natural History by : Derek Ratcliffe
Download or read book Lapland: A Natural History written by Derek Ratcliffe and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-06-30 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This stunning new Poyser title looks at the flora and fauna of Lapland - that area of northern Europe and northwestern Russia which lies within the Arctic circle. After general introductions, the book examines the Lapland ecosystems and species by habitat type, with one chapter dealing with freshwater habitats, another with open tundra and so on. The history of natural history study in the region, and the conservation issues affecting it today, are also discussed. The book is illustrated throughout with a wealth of the author's own colour photographs, and there are also some line drawings and a number of maps and other figures to illustrate key points. This is a wonderfully evocative book which creates a vivid sense of place for one of the planet's last wildernesses, and will appeal to anyone who loves wildlife and wild places. "A rare window onto one of Europe's most unspoiled areas, by the outstanding British field naturalist of the late 20th century." The Independent "An informative and easy-to-read text on a part of the natural world unfamiliar to many. It is a fascinating, enjoyable book." Wildlife Activist, Summer 2006
Book Synopsis Guide to Standard Floras of the World by : David G. Frodin
Download or read book Guide to Standard Floras of the World written by David G. Frodin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-06-14 with total page 1136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2001 book provides a selective annotated bibliography of the principal floras and related works of inventory for vascular plants. The second edition was completely updated and expanded to take into account the substantial literature of the late twentieth century, and features a more fully developed review of the history of floristic documentation. The works covered are principally specialist publications such as floras, checklists, distribution atlases, systematic iconographies and enumerations or catalogues, although a relatively few more popularly oriented books are also included. The Guide is organised in ten geographical divisions, with these successively divided into regions and units, each of which is prefaced with a historical review of floristic studies. In addition to the bibliography, the book includes general chapters on botanical bibliography, the history of floras, and general principles and current trends, plus an appendix on bibliographic searching, a lexicon of serial abbreviations, and author and geographical indexes.

Download or read book British Plant Communities written by J. S. Rodwell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1998-04-30 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British Plant Communities is the first systematic and comprehensive account of the vegetation types of this country. It covers all natural, semi-natural and major artificial habitats in Great Britain (but not Northern Ireland), representing the fruits of fifteen years of research by leading plant ecologists. The book breaks new ground in wedding the rigorous interest in the classification of plant communities that has characterized Continental phytosociology with the deep concern traditional in Great Britain to understand how vegetation works. The published volumes have been greeted with universal acclaim, and the series has become firmly established as a framework for a wide variety of teaching, research and management activities in ecology, conservation and land-use planning.
