Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea of writing a textbook on urban surveying and mapping originated with the Commission on Cartography of the Pan American Institute of Geography and History (PAIGH) because of the urgent need for planned and integrated surveying and mapping in urban communities of the American Hemisphere. It is obvious, however, that, with the exception of some European countries, the same situation exists in most cities of the world. The undersigned was asked to undertake the task. The task was not simple. The only available comprehensive text in the field 1 is Geodezja Miejska , which was published recently in Poland and reached the authors only after most of the present text was written. It is tailored to a very specific market and different requirements. Although it is an impressive book, it differs vastly from our own approach. Other reference texts are fragmentary or obsolete. During the last two decades, revolutionary changes have occurred in survey ing and mapping technology which have had a profound effect on actual procedures. In addition, the traditional concepts of urban surveying and map ping are undergoing rapid evolution. It is recognized that administration and planning require a great variety of continuously updated information which must be correlated with the actual physical fabric of the community, as de termined by surveying and mapping. Modern urban surveying and mapping is therefore the foundation of the broad and dynamic information system that is indispensable in any rational municipal effort.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This guide shows you how three great land surveys can provide information on your ancestor's home as well as historical snapshots of your area. The tithe, Valuation Office and National Farm surveys were comparable to the Domesday Book in their coverage. Spanning the period 1836-1943, they provide abundant information on rural and urban localities; on dwellings, settlements and landscapes; and on individual householders and tenants, farmers and industrialists. The surveys are of value to family and local historians. This guide is your companion to researching these records. The text explains why and how the surveys were made, and shows you how to identify and interpret the records that will put your ancestors or neighbourhood 'on the map'.

Book excerpt: Mountains appear in the oldest known maps yet their representation has proven a notoriously difficult challenge for map makers. In this essay, Ernesto Capello surveys the broad history of relief representation in cartography with an emphasis on the allegorical, commercial and political uses of mapping mountains. After an initial overview and critique of the traditional historiography and development of techniques of relief representation, the essay features four clusters of mountain mapping emphases. These include visions of mountains as paradise, the mountain as site of colonial and postcolonial encounter, the development of elevation profiles and panoramas, and mountains as mass-marketed touristed itineraries.
