Book excerpt: As students of Clare Martin, and readers of her two previous books, will recognise, Mapping the Psyche Book 3, covering transits, returns, progressions and directions, is once again both immediately accessible and profound. It leads seamlessly from personal contributions from individual students, to philosophical discussion; to precise astronomical explanation and calculation; and to illuminating references to the historic roots of present day astrology. As befits a course taught for the Centre of Psychological Astrology, the approach is "psychological," but equally respects the traditional skills in calculation of precomputerised astrology, and the work of past masters in the astrological and psychological worlds. The title of Book 3 however is "Kairos" defined not as chronological time, but "time in between" - "the propitious moment for the performance of an action or the coming into being of a new state" and the recognition of the existence of such moments is the core theme of the book, in both a practical and philosophical sense. The understanding students need to acquire here of the tools of transits, progressions and directions is succinctly presented, as Clare directs her students to review their personal concerns in the light of the story told by placements in their charts at "that" moment in time. A clear understanding of the process provides the reader with an opportunity to consciously align their lives with the movements of the heavens - to "do gladly that which I must do." In this way, the book offers not only a crystal clear exposition of astrological mechanics, but a genuine "map" for students to follow. It also excels as an invaluable reference source for experienced astrologers to cherish.

Book excerpt: "A question that sometimes drives me hazy: am I-or are the others crazy?" -Albert Einstein For more than half his life, author Tim Nuske thought he was crazy. During a certain ten-year period and beyond, he could have fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for at least half of the close to 400 mental disorders described in psychiatry's billing bible, the DSM. Building on these experiences, Nuske presents a thought-provoking theory of the mind and how it relates to mental illness, a widespread social concern affecting countless millions. But are such experiences a real biological illness or brain disease? Are they caused by a chemical imbalance or genetic defect? And what does the mind have to do with a mental illness/disorder/disease? Following a life changing experience and spiritual awakening Tim entered university to study psychology, intent on gaining a better understanding of his own madness and the mind, and to help others with what he had learned. The Map of the Psyche: The Truth of Mental Illness is the result of four years of research and over a decade of personal experience with mental illness. He had to be mental to map the mind. Psychologists and philosophers have been trying to understand the mind for hundreds of years: Tim mapped it in under three (plus a lifetime of prior experience). Offering an alternative to psychiatric labelling and drugging, he shares what he considers to be a more accurate and effective approach to mental health care. The truth is in the psyche. The truth is found within.

Book excerpt: An alchemical approach seeks to release the latent potential which resides within the individual and within the cosmos. There was never any question that the work of the alchemists depended upon a knowledge of the planets and their cycles, since alchemical transformations could only be successful if carried out at the astrologically appropriate times. This book has been steadily fermenting and evolving for over twenty-five years, and as such it represents a true alchemical process. It has gone from being an idea to a passion, and then a project and now it is a fully-fledged book. Learn firstly about the mystical process of alchemy, and then discover how it deepens our understanding of the transits of the outer planets to the natal chart. A fascinating book that deserves a place in every astrologer's library.Clare Martin has an MA in Integrative Psychotherapy and has been a practising astrologer and teacher since 1990, working in London for the Faculty of Astrological Studies, of which she was President for nine years, and at the Centre for Psychological Astrology. Her personal approach to astrological interpretation is fundamentally Jungian, and evolved during a long period of studying with a variety of teachers in the western mystery traditions. Clare now lives in Dorset, where she continues her writing and consultancy work and is a tutor on the Mercury Internet School of Psychological Astrology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a lot of interest in today’s culture about the idea of Persona and the psychological mapping of one’s inner world. In fact, the interest is so strong that the superstar Korean Pop band, BTS, has taken Dr. Murray Stein’s concepts and woven them into the title and lyrics of their latest album, Map of the Soul:Persona. What is our persona and how does it affect our life’s journey? What masks do we wear as we engage those around us? Our persona is ultimately how we relate to the world. Combined with our ego, shadow, anima and other intra-psychic elements it creates an internal map of the soul. T.S. Eliot, one of the most famous English poets of the 20th Century, wrote that every cat has three names: the name that everybody knows, the name that only the cat’s intimate friends and family know, and the name that only the cat knows. As humans, we also have three names: the name that everybody knows, which is the public persona; the name of that only your close friends and family know, which is your private persona; and the name that only you know, which refers to your deepest self. Many people know the first name, and some people know the second. Do you know your secret name, your individual, singular, unique name? This is a name that was given to you before you were named by your family and by your society. This name is the one that you should never lose or forget. Do you know it?

Book excerpt: An illuminating look at the surprising history and science of astrology, civilization’s first system of algorithms, from Babylon to the present day. Humans are pattern-matching creatures, and astrology is the universe’s grandest pattern-matching game. In this refreshing work of history and analysis, data scientist Alexander Boxer examines classical texts on astrology to expose its underlying scientific and mathematical framework. Astrology, he argues, was the ancient world’s most ambitious applied mathematics problem, a monumental data-analysis enterprise sustained by some of history’s most brilliant minds, from Ptolemy to al-Kindi to Kepler. Thousands of years ago, astrologers became the first to stumble upon the powerful storytelling possibilities inherent in numerical data. To correlate the configurations of the cosmos with our day-to-day lives, astrologers relied upon a “scheme of heaven,” or horoscope, showing the precise configuration of the planets at a particular instant in time as viewed from a particular place on Earth. Although recognized as pseudoscience today, horoscopes were once considered a cutting-edge scientific tool. Boxer teaches us how to read these esoteric charts—and appreciate the complex astronomical calculations needed to generate them—by diagramming how the heavens appeared at important moments in astrology’s history, from the assassination of Julius Caesar as viewed from Rome to the Apollo 11 lunar landing as seen from the surface of the Moon. He then puts these horoscopes to the test using modern data sets and statistical science, arguing that today’s data scientists do work similar to astrologers of yore. By looking back at the algorithms of ancient astrology, he suggests, we can better recognize the patterns that are timeless characteristics of our own pattern-matching tendencies. At once critical, rigorous, and far ranging, A Scheme of Heaven recontextualizes astrology as a vast, technological project—spanning continents and centuries—that foreshadowed our data-driven world today.

Book excerpt: Provocateurs Will Self and Ralph Steadman join forces in this post-millennial meditation on the vexed relationship between psyche and place in a globalised world, bringing together for the first time the very best of their 'Psychogeography' columns for the Independent. The introduction, 'Walking to New York', is both a prelude to the verbal and visual essays that make up this extraordinary collaboration, and a revealing exploration of the split in Self's Jewish-American-British psyche and its relationship to the political geography of the post-9/11 world. Ranging from the Scottish Highlands to Istanbul and from Morocco to Ohio, Will Self's engaging and disturbing vision is perfectly counter-pointed by Ralph Steadman's edgy and beautiful artwork.

Book excerpt: In this second book in the series, Map of the Soul - Shadow: Our Hidden Self, Dr. Murray Stein explores the dark recesses of our psyche, as well as the shadow images in BTS' latest songs in their album Map of the Soul: 7. The Korean Pop band, BTS, has been taking the world by storm with a series of albums inspired from Dr. Stein's concepts titled Map of the Soul. Dr. Stein has joined them in expressing these same Jungian themes in a companion book series. The landscape of the soul has many contours and some hidden regions. This book speaks about obscure, typically unacknowledged aspects of the psyche. The shadow may appear initially like an unwanted intruder but those who become acquainted with their shadow discover it to be a vast storehouse of treasures and resources on the journey of self-discovery. Whereas the persona is the part of your personality that is revealed to others, the shadow is the part of your personality that is concealed from others and ourselves. The shadow often declares itself through sudden, often brutal reversals. At the collective level, the shadow proves capable of magnetizing people in the same direction, often with very destructive results. The person intent on living a more full, authentic life will be well served by becoming acquainted with the shadow. Dr. Stein and the collaborators, Sarah Stein, Steven Buser, and Leonard Cruz, are deeply indebted to BTS, whose world-wide popularity points to their remarkable ability to tap into universal themes that dwell in the collective domain. BTS' music inspired this work and we hope this work will inspire others to explore the deep recesses of their inner life. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Also available in an open-access, full-text edition at http://oaktrust.library.tamu.edu/handle/1969.1/86080 The black sun, an ages-old image of the darkness in individual lives and in life itself, has not been treated hospitably in the modern world. Modern psychology has seen darkness primarily as a negative force, something to move through and beyond, but it actually has an intrinsic importance to the human psyche. In this book, Jungian analyst Stanton Marlan reexamines the paradoxical image of the black sun and the meaning of darkness in Western culture. In the image of the black sun, Marlan finds the hint of a darkness that shines. He draws upon his clinical experiences—and on a wide range of literature and art, including Goethe’s Faust, Dante’s Inferno, the black art of Rothko and Reinhardt—to explore the influence of light and shadow on the fundamental structures of modern thought as well as the contemporary practice of analysis. He shows that the black sun accompanies not only the most negative of psychic experiences but also the most sublime, resonating with the mystical experience of negative theology, the Kabbalah, the Buddhist notions of the void, and the black light of the Sufi Mystics. An important contribution to the understanding of alchemical psychology, this book draws on a postmodern sensibility to develop an original understanding of the black sun. It offers insight into modernity, the act of imagination, and the work of analysis in understanding depression, trauma, and transformation of the soul. Marlan’s original reflections help us to explore the unknown darkness conventionally called the Self.
