Book excerpt: Alfred Augustus Grace was one of New Zealand's most accomplished early writers and a member of the celebrated 'Maoriland' school of writing that flourished between 1896 and 1915. These writers' romantic treatment of the Maori people helped shape New Zealand's culture in the early twentieth century. Maoriland Stories (1895) was Grace's first major publication. It contains four stories about settlers and three about Maori and Maori/Pakeha relations. The latter stories were of particular interest to readers of the time. Although New Zealand's population was by then overwhelmingly European, the Maori people and their culture continued to occupy the Pakeha imagination. This near-facsimile edition includes new matierial by Dr Anne Maxwell of the University of Melbourne, discussing the author and his stories and placing them in an historical and cultural context.

Book excerpt: This critical examination of Maoriland literature argues against the former glib dismissals of the period and focuses instead on the era’s importance in the birth of a distinct New Zealand style of writing. By connecting the literature and other cultural forms of Maoriland to the larger realms of empire and contemporary criticism, this study explores the roots of the country’s modern feminism, progressive social legislation, and bicultural relations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Girl of New Zealand presents a nuanced insight into the way violence and colonial attitudes shaped the representation of Māori women and girls. Michelle Erai examines more than thirty images of Māori women alongside the records of early missionaries and settlers in Aotearoa, as well as comments by archivists and librarians, to shed light on how race, gender, and sexuality have been ascribed to particular bodies. Viewed through Māori, feminist, queer, and film theories, Erai shows how images such as Girl of New Zealand (1793) and later images, cartoons, and travel advertising created and deployed a colonial optic. Girl of New Zealand reveals how the phantasm of the Māori woman has shown up in historical images, how such images shape our imagination, and how impossible it has become to maintain the delusion of the “innocent eye.” Erai argues that the process of ascribing race, gender, sexuality, and class to imagined bodies can itself be a kind of violence. In the wake of the Me Too movement and other feminist projects, Erai’s timely analysis speaks to the historical foundations of negative attitudes toward Indigenous Māori women in the eyes of colonial “others”—outsiders from elsewhere who reflected their own desires and fears in their representations of the Indigenous inhabitants of Aotearoa, New Zealand. Erai resurrects Māori women from objectification and locates them firmly within Māori whānau and communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores Mansfield's identity as a (post)colonial writer in relation to her foremost reputation as a European modernistIn seeking new possibilities for alignments with, and resolutions to, the contradictory agendas implied by the terms '(post)colonial' and 'modernist', the essays in this volume address the clashing perspectives between Mansfield's life in Europe, where her troubled self-designation as the 'little colonial' became a fertile source of her distinctive brand of literary modernism, and her ongoing, complex relationship with her New Zealand homeland. The contributors investigate Mansfield's (post)colonial modernism in the context both of New Zealand settler-colonial fiction and of her European literary inheritance. Affinities with writers such as Edith Wharton and Robert Louis Stevenson reveal that 'home' can be a diasporic place, combining alienation with belonging. The volume also registers initial responses to the widened scope for Mansfield scholarship launched by the first two volumes of the new Edinburgh Collected Works of Katherine Mansfield.Includes:*Previously unpublished poetry and fiction*Reports of current research findings on Katherine Mansfield*An introduction by Janet Wilson, Professor of English and Postcolonial Studies, University of Northampton *Reviews of recent publications on Mansfield and her contemporaries

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Maoriland Fairy Tales Somewhere far across the sea lies Hawa-iki, that wonderful Motherland where the sun's rays glow from early dawn to sudden night. Nobody knows now where that Old land is, nobody has ever found it again, but its far-strewn sons and daughters still tell of its remembered glories, its radiant sunshine, its flowers and butterflies, its white-topped mountains and its mighty streams. Some think it may have been India, while others say it must have been some age-old continent which has since sunk and now lies buried under the Pacific Ocean.
