Book excerpt: The new fourth edition of Understanding and Managing Vision Deficits: A Guide for Occupational Therapists provides practitioners not only with a comprehensive understanding of vision and how vision problems can impact on the practice of occupational therapy, but also invaluable guidance on how to effectively manage clients with these issues. The book presents a three-part model of vision to inform readers’ understanding of the issues, and management across a range of eye conditions: Visual integrity: Includes visual acuity (clarity), the optics of the eye, and eye health. Visual efficiency skills: Includes focusing, eye teaming, and eye movements. Visual information processing skills: Includes the ability to analyze, interpret, and respond to visual information. Covering key topics such as vision problems related to acquired brain injury and learning disorders among children with special educational needs, the new edition has been thoroughly updated to the latest findings in vision research, while there are also new chapters on using an interprofessional collaborative approach to client care, and how remediation can be integrated into occupational therapy principles to create occupation-based remedial vision rehabilitation. A unique collaboration between the professions of occupational therapy and optometry together, and including a glossary of key terms and a sample vision screening report form, this is a key text for health care professionals to provide the ultimate in patient care.

Book Synopsis Royal Observer Corps by : Air Ministry Personnel
Download or read book Royal Observer Corps written by Air Ministry Personnel and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2018-02-28 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The key roles played by the Royal Observer Corps in the Second World War have, all too often, been overshadowed by more glamourous arms of the defense forces. The teams in the Sector Stations, plotting the battles raging above, and the Spitfires and Hurricanes swooping upon the formations of enemy fighters and bombers, present easily imagined and dramatic scenes. Yet between the radar stations, detecting the German aircraft approaching over the Channel, and the Sector Controls were the little sandbagged posts of the Observer Corps that provided overland tracking of the enemy formations. The Royal Observer Corps (the Royal prefix being approved in 1941) proved a vital link in the communication chain in the defense of the UK, particularly in the Battle of Britain, as it provided the only means of tracking enemy aircraft once they had crossed the coastline. The highly skilled Observers were also able to identify and count the enemy aircraft, turning blips on a screen into actual types and numbers of German machines.Even after the threat from the Luftwaffe receded after the Battle of Britain and the Blitz, the ROC again came to the fore when the V1s opened a new reign of terror in 1944. Because these small, fast weapons were so hard to detect the RAFs fighter controllers moved into the ROCs operations rooms so that they could respond to the V-1 threat more rapidly. In this official history of the ROC written shortly after the war, the corps operations throughout the conflict are set out in great detail. This includes a section on the last flight of Rudolf Hess, as well as one detailing the work of those who were selected for employment as Seaborne Observers on ships during the D-Day landings, where their specialist identification skills were used to prevent the all-too prevalent instances of friendly fire. This history provides an account of the ROC which is just as important in understanding the operations of the corps as the Observers were in the defense of the United Kingdom during the Second War.

Book Synopsis Food Traceability by : Jennifer McEntire
Download or read book Food Traceability written by Jennifer McEntire and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-11 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a picture of food traceability for all aspects of the food system, recognizing the unique differences, challenges, and “states of the industry” in different types of food products, as well as the different pressures and opportunities at different points in the supply chain and the research that has already been done. It also provides some historical context, along with the types of solutions available to the food industry, and the benefits associated with better recordkeeping that go beyond the public good and impact the bottom line. Whenever a food related outbreak occurs, traceability is called into question. When lives are at stake, it is critical that the root of the problem is quickly identified to prevent further illness. Once the problem is found, it’s just as important to contain it quickly. Too often, recalls expand because implicated product is not readily accounted for. Mention of traceability stirs fear for many in the food industry for several reasons: within a company, it’s not clear if responsibility for traceability lies with food safety professionals involved in recalls, supply chain professionals who understand product movement, IT professionals who build and maintain the recordkeeping systems, or regulatory professionals who need to respond to government requests for information. There is also a sense that traceability is someone else’s problem. Few firms admit that they are the weak link and instead tout how quickly they can perform mock recalls. But traceability is about more than just recalls. It is about the connectivity of the supply chain as a product and its constituents travel from the farm to the consumer. Because it is a systems issue, there is a sense that the investment by a single firm will be meaningless if supply chain partners don’t have comparable abilities. This book will address both these surrounding issues and solutions.
