Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wallenstein's Camp Two tranlations of Wallenstein's Camp having already appeared - one by the late Earl of Ellesmere, the other by Mr. James Churchill in "Bohn's Standard Library" - this maiden - attempt is with great diffidence offered to the public. A lenient judgment is then expected; especially as it was undertaken to while away the dull hours of a monsoon, which in 1866 broke so heavily over the cantonments of Mhow, East Indies, as to cause a cessation of all, but ordinary, military duties, and to render leisure irksome without some appointed task. Wallenstein's Camp is a prelude to Schiller's "Piccolomini" and "Wallenstein's Death" and displays, as T. S. Coleridge - the successful translator of those renowned Dramas - says, "a lively picture of laxity of discipline and the mutinous dispositions of Wallenstein's soldiery." During the last seventeen years of his life (1788-1805), Schiller struck up a productive, if complicated, friendship with the already famous and influential Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics, and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works he left as sketches. This relationship and these discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. They also worked together on Xenien, a collection of short satirical poems in which both Schiller and Goethe challenge opponents to their philosophical vision.

Download or read book The Camp of Wallenstein (Dodo Press) written by Friedrich Schiller and published by . This book was released on 2007-07 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805) was a German poet, philosopher, historian, and dramatist. Schiller wrote many philosophical papers on ethics and aesthetics. He developed the concept of the Schone Seele (beautiful soul), a human being whose emotions have been educated by his reason, so that Pflicht und Neigung (duty and inclination) are no longer in conflict with one another; thus "beauty," for Schiller, is not merely a sensual experience, but a moral one as well: the Good is the Beautiful. His philosophical work was also particularly concerned with the question of human freedom, a preoccupation which also guided his historical researches. Schiller is considered by most Germans to be Germany's most important classical playwright. Critics have noted his innovative use of dramatic structure and his creation of new forms, such as the melodrama and the bourgeois tragedy. Amongst his famous works are Love and Intrigue (1784), Don Carlos (1787), The Minister (1796), The Death of Wallenstein (1799), The Piccolomini (1800) and Mary Stuart (1800).
