Book excerpt: Written as a letter from a Zimbabwean mother to her daughter, a student at Harvard, J. Nozipo Maraire evokes the moving story of a mother reaching out to her daughter to share the lessons life has taught her and bring the two closer than ever before. Interweaving history and memories, disappointments and dreams, Zenzele tells the tales of Zimbabwe's struggle for independence and the men and women who shaped it: Zenzele's father, an outspoken activist lawyer; her aunt, a schoolteacher by day and secret guerrilla fighter by night; and her cousin, a maid and a spy. Rich with insight, history, and philosophy, Zenzele is a powerful and compelling story that is both revolutionary and revelatory--the story of one life that poignantly speaks of all lives.

Download or read book Jews in Byzantium written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-10-14 with total page 1058 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the ever increasing volume of Byzantine Studies in recent years there seems to be one very apparent void, namely, the history and culture of the Byzantine Jewry, its presence and impact on the surrounding convoluted Byzantine world between Late Antiquity until the conquest of Byzantium (1453). With the now classic but dated studies by Joshua Starr and Andrew Sharf, the collective volume at hand is an attempt to somewhat fill in this void. The articles assembled in this volume are penned by leading scholars in the field. They present bird's eye views of the cultural history of the Jewish Byzantine minority, alongside a wide array of surveys and in-depth studies of various topics. These topics pertain to the dialectics of the religious, literary, economic and visual representation world of this alien minority within its surrounding Byzantine hegemonic world.

Book Synopsis Ireland and the Irish by : John Ardagh
Download or read book Ireland and the Irish written by John Ardagh and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This perceptive and highly readable book is primarily about the Republic and how it has changed profoundly over the past forty years, as a traditional rural-based society has adapted to a wider modern world. Once so enclosed, the Irish are now committed Europeans and have gained much from Europe. They have banished their old poverty, modernized their economy and lifestyles - but are they losing the old 'Irish' values? On this the nation is split, as a powerful Catholic Church sees its authority contested and social change leads to moral confusion." "Ardagh has talked with President Mary Robinson, Gay Byrne, the king of Irish TV, Eamonn Casey, the disgraced ex-Bishop of Galway, and countless others. His book ranges widely, from the Dublin slums to the fate of the small Mayo farms; it takes in the changing role of women, the young novelists, the music revival, the fight for the Irish language, the new-style emigrants, the creaking political system." "The long chapter on the North gives an upbeat picture of the patient grass-roots efforts at reconciliation, and of how a resilient people continue normal life in the shadow of the ongoing conflict. The logic of history may well lead to a united Ireland - but not by any means yet."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Book Synopsis The Expansion of Orthodox Europe by : Jonathan Shepard
Download or read book The Expansion of Orthodox Europe written by Jonathan Shepard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume aims to clarify the context for the expansion of Western Europe by focusing on what had been the greatest power in early medieval Europe, the Byzantine empire, and on the continuing strengths and expansion of the Orthodox world. Byzantine 'orthodoxy' offered a format for faith, hope and fear in various combinations, involving religious beliefs and an idealised world-order. Its multifaceted nature helps explain Byzantium's success - the resilience of the earthly empire and the appeal of its religious organisation and rites to other societies. The volume reprints a set of key studies, combining classic treatments of Byzantine and Slavic history with far-reaching explorations of the extent of those worlds. Part I focuses on the empire in its heyday: some studies illustrate the sense of manifest destiny bolstering the imperial order until - and even beyond - Constantinople's fall to the fourth crusaders in 1204. The spread of the Byzantines' cult enlarged their trading zone northwards across Rus, while Byzantine-based merchants were more active than is generally realised in the Eastern Mediterranean. Part II includes an overview of the 'fragmentation' following 1204. Studies show how Byzantine rites and ideals of rulership were adopted by Serb and Bulgarian dynasts. Particular attention is paid to Rus: although subjugated by the Mongols, Rus churchmen, monks and leading princes all drew on Byzantine religious texts and imagery. From the later fifteenth century Moscow's rulers began to be portrayed as new guardians of religious correctness, even as the World's End supposedly drew nigh. The Introduction contextualises the studies included here, highlighting the significance (and not just in terms of rivalry) of the Byzantine Orthodox world for developments in Western Europe.

Book Synopsis Greek Scripture and the Rabbis by : Timothy Michael Law
Download or read book Greek Scripture and the Rabbis written by Timothy Michael Law and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek was widely used by Jews in the eastern Mediterranean, from Alexander the Great until the Holocaust. However, its role in the translation of Hebrew Scripture for Jewish communities has not received sustained attention. The European Seminar in Advanced Jewish Studies, held at the Oxford Centre for Hebrew and Jewish Studies in 2009 provided an international scholarly forum on the subject. The papers in this volume represent the fruits of the residential workshop. They cover biblical textual criticism, the later Jewish Greek revisions, rabbinic attitudes towards Scripture in Greek, early Christian views of Jewish Greek versions, imperial legislation on Jews and the public reading of Scripture, Greek loanwords in rabbinic literature, and medieval Greek biblical glosses in Jewish manuscripts.
