I had a kind of pleasure in doing such things for my pupils, and there was a further incentive in the evident pleasure of my pupils in seeing what I did. I did not know it at the time, but as I look back I realize that I must have worked in a spirit more selfish than altruistic. I prized the exhilaration in self that comes from showing novel things to others rather more than the exhilaration in others that comes from finding things out for themselves.
