Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual to an Introduction to Economics The object of this chapter is to explain the nature and. Scope of the subject and the method by which it may be studied. Too much stress should not be laid on the method of mathematical logic treated in the passage describing the syllogism. If a course in logic is given in the school an opportunity for correlation will be presented, but otherwise the bare idea of the method is all that is necessary. The essential points are, the meaning of the term economic law, and the relation of economics to other social and physical sciences. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual to an Introduction to Economics Although the teaching of economics in high schools is usually relegated to the commercial department, the subject is not purely a commercial one. In the preparation of the Introduction to Economics this fact has been constantly borne in mind. It has been the effort of the author to explain in as simple a manner as possible the organization of the present economic system. We all admit that the system has many and grave defects, but these defects cannot be removed unless the system is first understood. The object of teaching economics, therefore, is to provide the student with a knowledge of the manner in which his economic life is controlled and directed, so that when he leaves school for the wider life of the university and of the world at large there will be at least an elementary understanding of the problems which face all of us. It is important that the teacher should understand this purpose, for otherwise the teaching might be directed toward unimportant matters instead of concentrating on principles. It contains in substance the talks on economics which have been made, for the past eleven years, to my Classes in Cornell and New York Universities. NO apology is offered for the fact that this volume is limited to a discussion of principles. Even the concluding chapters on corporations are designed to exemplify princi ples. The time has long since passed when a single volume can treat exhaustively the whole field of economics. I shall be more than content if this work justifies the scope indicated for it in the title - Introduction to Economics. Designed as an introduction, this book will serve as a means to the end of a more intelligent study of economic questions. It does not dispense with the necessity of read ing the many excellent treatises devoted to the different phases of economics; rather it distinctly calls for such read ings. It merely prepares the mind of the student for the thought contained in the more advanced and specialized works on the subject and the practical applications they reveal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economics an Introduction for the General Reader AN apology is needed for adding another to the large num ber of books that attempt to' deal with the whole subject matter of Economics in a single volume. I offer two pleas in extenuation. The first is that nearly all existing introduc tions to the subject are intended primarily for the University student. The pious wish is generally expressed that they may be of use also to the general reader; but the general reader's special needs and opportunities are seldom borne in mind. His needs are different, inasmuch as he has not the guidance of a teacher and the leisure of the student; on the other hand, his opportunities are some compensation for these disadvan tages, since he has usually a practical interest in the economic system and an experience of its working, which the academic student lacks. It seemed, therefore, worth while to try to do for the economic organization as a whole what Bagehot and Mr. Hartley Withers have done for a part of it, the credit system to explain the principles of its construction and working in the language of ordinary life, and with reference to the experience and interests of the ordinary man. While it would need a Bagehot to succeed, I hope that the mere attempt will have done something to make it easier for the general reader to perceive the bearing of economic studies on the political and social problems in which he is interested. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Economics This book is designed to be an introduction to the science of economics. Technical discussions and difficult terminology have been avoided. The author has endeavored to write a book of practical value to the student, but is convinced that any practical work must be founded upon sound theory. There are many economic questions upon which there may be differences of opinion. Both sides of most disputed questions are given. Students should be encouraged to draw their own conclusions after weighing the evidence. While the experience of most teachers of economics has convinced them that one book should be followed as a guide, students should read references in other works. Fortunately there are many excellent books - perhaps too difficult in parts for the beginner - containing many chapters that can be read with profit by even an immature student. Among many works suitable for reference purposes the following are especially recommended: Bulloch, Introduction to the Study of Economics; Carver, Principles of Political Economy; Ely, Outlines of Economics; Fetter, Principles of Economics; Seager, Introduction to Economics; and Turner, Introduction to Economics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Economics This book has been written in response to a demand for a somewhat shorter and more elementary work than the Introduction to the Study of Economics, which the author brought out in 1897. In order to meet this demand, it was necessary to make a substantially new book, in which the substance of doctrine and the gen eral groundwork remain the same, but the method of treating most subjects has been more or less radically altered. Less space has been devoted to purely theo retical questions and more descriptive and illustrative material has been presented. It is hoped that the present treatise will meet the needs of a relatively short course for beginners in eco nomics. As the work stands, it is probably extensive enough for the longest courses now given in secondary schools. If it is found too long for some of the shorter courses, the instructor can easily adapt it to the needs of his class by making a few omissions. The first chap ter can be treated in an introductory talk or lecture on the first day that the class meets; and the tenth and fifteenth chapters, treating, as they do, topics that are seldom discussed at length in an elementary work, can be readily omitted. The world in which we live is an ever changing, restless world; it is not static or at a standstill. Institutions, laws and ways of getting a living are different to-day from those prevailing when George Washington was President; and before the year 2000 is ushered in many further changes will occur. There is progress, or at least change, as the years go by in government, in moral ideals and in methods employed in industry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Economics: Lesson 1 Within the past century man 's increasing control over the forces of nature-his ability to make them werk for him - has enormously increased the production-of wealth in-civilized countries. The average money income of the English family of five persons is now per annum as against $375 in 1820, and owing to the greater cheap ness of commodities, this trill purchase nearly as much as would have purchased in 1820. In a word, the average English family is from four-to five times as well 05 as it was a century ago. Its income has from four to five times the former purchasing power. (see Mar shalt's Principles of Economics, 5th edition; page 751, note). This fact is of tremendous significance. It means that we have reason to hope that in the course of time an ever-increasing portion of our people will be released from the drudgery of mechanical manual labour and will be able to devote a large part of their time to public affairs, literature, art, science and religion. Rl'he utiliza tion of the elements in the service of man is giving us the necessary economic basis for a real democracy' in which all the citizens will be men of education and cul ture. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Macroeconomic policy is one of the most important policy domains, and the tools of macroeconomics are among the most valuable for policy makers. Yet there has been, up to now, a wide gulf between the level at which macroeconomics is taught at the undergraduate level and the level at which it is practiced. At the same time, doctoral-level textbooks are usually not targeted at a policy audience, making advanced macroeconomics less accessible to current and aspiring practitioners. This book, born out of the Masters course the authors taught for many years at the Harvard Kennedy School, fills this gap. It introduces the tools of dynamic optimization in the context of economic growth, and then applies them to a wide range of policy questions – ranging from pensions, consumption, investment and finance, to the most recent developments in fiscal and monetary policy. It does so with the requisite rigor, but also with a light touch, and an unyielding focus on their application to policy-making, as befits the authors’ own practical experience. Advanced Macroeconomics: An Easy Guide is bound to become a great resource for graduate and advanced undergraduate students, and practitioners alike.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Commerce To the tools of the teacher in economics Mr. Clow now adds this book on Commerce. It must be tested, like every new tool, by actual use. That it has not been constructed Without some careful experiment ing is shown by What the author says of its trial in the school With Which he is connected and thus it rests already on a considerable experience. But it is also constructed on sound principles. Two funda mental principles of teaching - that the pupil shall first observe and understand the things With Which he is brought in contact by familiar experience, and shall proceed thence to the study of things unfamil iar; and that he shall be trained to'observe, to do, and to think for himself - these Mr. C10w has had steadily in mind. Hence his book is not so much a text-book as a manual of directions, an aid and a guide for teachers and pupils. As such it assumes that the instruction Will be given by a capable teacher, well trained in this particular branch of knowledge; and it calls for careful watching and judicious guidance of pupils. Rightly used, it may be expected to prove stimulating and profitable. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introductory Economics A cursory ex'amination of the contents of this book will probably give the impression that the theoretical aspects of the science receive in it greater emphasis than present opinion among economics teachers can approve. The writer may be permitted to urge, in his own defense, that the method which he has employed was chosen not without careful consideration of the existing situation in the field of economics instruction. In the present stage of university evolution, economics is almost everywhere taught by men who have been trained in the science; a text-book writer is therefore justified in relying upon the teacher for the supplying of many of the concrete facts which in a given situation are most effective for purposes of instruction. An efficient teacher can base a highly practical course upon a text-book which is fundamentally theoretical. Moreover, in most colleges and universities the general course in economics is usually followed by special courses, and these, in order to attract any considerable number of students, must be practical. It is not too much to say that, for a majority of students, theoretical study begins and ends with the introductory course. Such a course ought, therefore, to present a reasonably thorough study of the general principles Of the science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over a million copies sold, Economics in One Lesson is an essential guide to the basics of economic theory. A fundamental influence on modern libertarianism, Hazlitt defends capitalism and the free market from economic myths that persist to this day. Considered among the leading economic thinkers of the “Austrian School,” which includes Carl Menger, Ludwig von Mises, Friedrich (F.A.) Hayek, and others, Henry Hazlitt (1894-1993), was a libertarian philosopher, an economist, and a journalist. He was the founding vice-president of the Foundation for Economic Education and an early editor of The Freeman magazine, an influential libertarian publication. Hazlitt wrote Economics in One Lesson, his seminal work, in 1946. Concise and instructive, it is also deceptively prescient and far-reaching in its efforts to dissemble economic fallacies that are so prevalent they have almost become a new orthodoxy. Economic commentators across the political spectrum have credited Hazlitt with foreseeing the collapse of the global economy which occurred more than 50 years after the initial publication of Economics in One Lesson. Hazlitt’s focus on non-governmental solutions, strong — and strongly reasoned — anti-deficit position, and general emphasis on free markets, economic liberty of individuals, and the dangers of government intervention make Economics in One Lesson every bit as relevant and valuable today as it has been since publication.
