Book Synopsis Perceptual Issues in Visualization by : Georges Grinstein
Download or read book Perceptual Issues in Visualization written by Georges Grinstein and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increase in the amount and dimensionality of scientific data collected, new approaches to the design of displays of such data have become essential. The designers of visual and auditory displays of scientific data seek to harness perceptual processes for data exploration. The general aim is to provide ways for raw data, and the statistical and mathematical structures they comprise, to "speak for themselves" and, thereby, enable scientists to conduct exploratory, in addition to confirmatory analyses of their data. The present primary approach via visualization depends mainly on coding data as positions of visually distinguishable elements in a two- or three- dimen sional euclidean space, e.g., as discrete points comprising clusters in scatter-plot displays and as patches comprising the hills and valleys of statistical surfaces. These displays are immensely effective because the data are in a form that evokes natural perceptual processing of the data into impressions of the presence and spatial disposition of apparent materials, objects, and structures in the viewers apparent physical environment. The problem with this mode of display, however, is that its perceptual potency is largeiy exhausted at dimension three, while we increasingly face the need to explore data of much greater dimensionality. The challenge posed for visualization researchers is to develop new modes of display that can push the dimensionality of data displays higher while retaining the kind of perceptual potency needed for data exploration.

Download or read book Palaeobiology II written by Derek E. G. Briggs and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2008-04-15 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Palaeobiology: A Synthesis was widely acclaimed both for its content and production quality. Ten years on, Derek Briggs and Peter Crowther have once again brought together over 150 leading authorities from around the world to produce Palaeobiology II. Using the same successful formula, the content is arranged as a series of concise articles, taking a thematic approach to the subject, rather than treating the various fossil groups systematically. This entirely new book, with its diversity of new topics and over 100 new contributors, reflects the exciting developments in the field, including accounts of spectacular newly discovered fossils, and embraces data from other disciplines such as astrobiology, geochemistry and genetics. Palaeobiology II will be an invaluable resource, not only for palaeontologists, but also for students and researchers in other branches of the earth and life sciences. Written by an international team of recognised authorities in the field. Content is concise but informative. Demonstrates how palaeobiological studies are at the heart of a range of scientific themes.

Download or read book Smart Schools written by David Perkins and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2008-06-30 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perkins reveals the common misguided strategies students use and offers teachers and parents advice on how they can help their children. Although there has been a great deal of impassioned debate over the sad state of American education today, surprisingly little attention has been paid to how children actually learn to think. But, as David Perkins demonstrates, we cannot solve our problems in this area simply by redistributing power or by asking children to regurgitate facts on a multiple choice exam. Rather we must ask what kinds of knowledge students typically acquire in school. In Smart Schools, Perkins draws on over twenty years of research to reveal the common misguided strategies students use in trying to understand a topic, and then shows teachers and parents what strategies they can use with children to increase real understanding.

Download or read book A Mind At A Time written by Mel Levine and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2012-12-11 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Different minds learn differently' writes Dr Mel Levine, one of the best-known education experts and paediatricians in America today. And that's a problem for many children, because most schools still cling to a one-size-fits-all education philosophy. In A MIND AT A TIME, Dr Levine shows parents and others who care for children how to identify these individual learning patterns. He explains how parents and teachers can encourage a child's strengths and bypass the child's weaknesses. This type of teaching produces satisfaction and achievement instead of frustration and failure. Different brains are differently wired with eight fundamental systems of learning that draw on a variety of neurodevelopmental capacities. Certain students are strong in certain areas and some are strong in others, but no one is equally capable in all eight. Learning begins at school, but it doesn't end there. Frustrating a child's desire to learn will have lifelong repercussions. We must begin to pay more attention to individual learning styles, to individual minds, urges Dr Levine, so that we can maximise our children's learning potential. A MIND AT A TIME shows us how.
Book Synopsis Duplex Sonography by : Edward G. Grant
Download or read book Duplex Sonography written by Edward G. Grant and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Duplex Sonography is the first comprehensive text written about this modality. Duplex Sonography is intended to provide relevant information on all aspects of the technique, ranging from the basics of performing the examination to the features of sometimes complex pathological states. The book is intended for anyone interested in non-invasive vascular diagnosis including radiologists, vascular surgeons and ultrasound/peripheral vascular technologists. Other groups may find individual chapters appealing: carotid/cardiac sonography for cardiologists, fetal sonography for obstetricians or carotid sonography for neurologists. Each chapter is not only a guide to duplex evaluation, but also provides valuable information about vascular dynamics of the organ system under discussion. Physicians or technologists reading this book should come away with a well-rounded background in state-of-the-art duplex sonography and will undoubtedly discover new possibilities for using this non-invasive vascular technique.
