Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Tree Diseases The steadily accumulating knowledge of the diseases of trees in the United States has never been brought together and made available to the general public. The intention of this Manual is to describe and suggest means of control for the tree diseases that have been most studied. Much remains to be learned about many of these diseases, and still many more have never been investigated. Therefore, in the treatment of this subject there are many unavoidable limitations which the trained reader will perceive. The diseases of fruit-trees, and of field and vegetable crops, have received the attention of plant pathologists in most parts of the country for many years. The results of these investigations have been made available to the growers of these crops in various ways. On the other hand, the diseases of forest, shade, and ornamental trees have been largely neglected until very recently. Tree diseases cause enormous losses in the large tracts of forests on which we depend for timber. The timber owner has been slow to adopt the fundamentals of scientific forest practice, and so far methods for the control of forest-tree diseases have not begun to operate in reducing losses. The owners of shade and ornamental trees are constantly confronted with diseases which they wish to control. They have become accustomed to controlling insects, but the fundamentals involved in the appearance of a disease and the measures necessary to protect trees from further damage are largely puzzling to them. An understanding of the cause of disease is essential to the undertaking of adequate control measures. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Forest Tree Diseases Common in California and Nevada: A Manual for Field Use This manual, designed for practical use in the field discusses only the more important tree diseases found in California and parts Of Nevada, though most of them are common also in other forest regions. Its aim is to enable the field man to determine the cause of the commoner diseases and injuries and to understand their effect on the living tree. It discusses also ways and means Of control Of fungi and mistletoes, as well as climatic, biological, and soil conditions which bring about diseases in forest trees. In studying forest tree diseases the Object is of course to learn how to fight and control them. For success in this, however, we must at least know the more common forms of the enemies we are to deal with, how they act on the living tree, which organs they attack, how they do it, and what the consequences are. The. Simplest case of injury is destruction of certain parts of the tree, when, for instance, a few needles are browsed Off by sheep or killed by needle miners or a fungus. In such cases the tree will hardly suffer, and there is no reason to speak Of disease. If however. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book of the Diseases of Trees Some fifty years ago a number of able investigators, of whom only Saxesen, Th. Hartig, and Ratzeburg need be named here, applied themselves to the study of insects. The life-history of forest insects, their harmfulness or usefulness, soon became the favourite study of many practical foresters, and in a few decades the joint efforts of numerous workers were rewarded by the elevation of Forest Entomology to the position of a much appreciated subject of scientific instruction, which has become the common property of all educated foresters. The case was otherwise with those plant-diseases which cannot be ascribed to the injuries of animals. Their investi gation was delayed until quite recently; for it was only after botanical science, by the aid of its chief instrument, the microscope, had obtained a clear insight into the normal strue ture and vital phenomena of plants, and especially after the study of fungi had been prosecuted in the last few decades by a series of distinguished investigators, that the examination of the phenomena of disease in the life of plants could be undertaken with a prospect of success. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Fruit Diseases At present, circumstances do not permit the plant doctor to call in person or by letter to advise with every fruit grower regarding his many problems. No experiment sta tion can furnish bulletins that will answer the purpose in every detail. And up to the present there have been no American texts or reference books dealing wholly, and in some detail, with the diseases of fruits. It is hoped that this Manual will give to the fruit-grower such information on fruit diseases as is available to date. The authors realize, however, that the best possible book on fruit diseases cannot entirely meet the situation. Possibly the day will come when each neighborhood will be provided with its own plant doc tor; until this time the advice must remain qualified. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Stress Triggered Tree Diseases: The Diebacks and Declines In recent decades, dieback and decline diseases have killed or damaged millions of trees in the northeastern United States. Most hardwood tree species probably have been affected by dieback and decline diseases at some point, but relatively few species have suffered greatly. Unfortunately, the species affected most severely are among the most important ones. And the incidence and severity of these diseases seems on the rise. In this publication, special emphasis is placed on the decline and mortality of oak initiated by gypsy moth defoliation. The significant impact of this widespread defoliation in recent years has prompted great concern and considerable research.
