Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1962, A Baptist Manual of Policy and Practice was written to bring together traditional Baptist positions and practices and the modifications adopted over the years. The first revised edition, published in 1991, maintained this objective and with contemporary and inclusive language added new insights and new understandings. This 50th Anniversary edition, while retaining the original's basic aim of describing the general church practice of Baptists (especially American Baptists) in the context of their biblical and theological foundations, was prepared with several additional goals in mind: Respond to profound shifts in Baptist polity that have occurred since 1991 Address new challenges, especially that of an increasingly fragmentary and secular culture Emphasize the trend toward a looser and more locally focused form of ministry Freshen the book's general style and tone Book jacket.

Book Synopsis Coventry by : Coventry Village Improvement Society
Download or read book Coventry written by Coventry Village Improvement Society and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2003 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coventry, lying some twenty miles east of Hartford, is the birthplace of Revolutionary War patriot Nathan Hale. On the National Register of Historic Places, Coventry Village is significant for its early industrial landscape and well-preserved houses that reflect a range of architectural styles including Colonial, Greek Revival, Italianate, and Queen Ann. Among sites of particular interest are Brigham Tavern (where George Washington enjoyed breakfast), the Ripley House, and the Hale Homestead. An important manufacturing area in the 1800s, Coventry was the site of seventeen mills that produced necessities such as cartridges for the Civil War, hats, wagons, paper goods, woolens, silks, yarn, and cotton material. From 1813 to 1847, the glassmaking industry flourished; today, early Coventry glass is a collector's item. In the early 1900s, Lake Wamgumbaug (commonly called Coventry Lake), with its popular Lakeside Park and Pavilion, became a vacation retreat. During the 1930s, vaudevillians and actors discovered the lake and settled in an area that became known as Actors Colony. Coventry traces the history of this unique town from its incorporation in 1712 to the mid-1900s.

Download or read book Henry Pilcher's Sons: Opus List and Historical Sketch written by Bynum Petty and published by LULU. This book was released on 2014-10-20 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henry Pilcher constructed his first pipe organ in Dover, England, in 1820. Over a period of almost 125 years, four generations of family members-working first in England and then in the United States-built Henry Pilcher's Sons Organ Company into a business known for its high manufacturing standards. The institution they created placed organs throughout the United States and only saw its end with the outbreak of World War II. This reference volume, rich with previously undiscovered source material, presents a historical synopsis of the family business. Also included is the opus list of Pilcher organs, arranged both chronologically and by region, and published here for the first time. A vital source for Pilcher organ historians and admirers, this volume offers useful data for anyone seeking historical background or information on specific Pilcher organs.
Book Synopsis Spiritual Home by : Charles D. Cashdollar
Download or read book Spiritual Home written by Charles D. Cashdollar and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Spiritual Home explores congregational life inside British and American Reformed churches between 1830 and 1915. At a time when scholars have become interested in the day-to-day experience of local congregations, this book reaches back into the nineteenth century, a critically formative period in Anglo-American religious life, to examine the historical roots of congregational life.Taking the perspective of the laity, Cashdollar ranges widely from worship and music to fund-raising and administration, from pastoral care to social work, from prayer meetings to strawberry festivals, from the sanctuary to the kitchen. Firmly rooted in broader currents of gender, class, notions of middle-class respectability, increasing expectations for personal privacy, and patterns of professionalization, he finds that there was a gradual shift in emphasis during these years from piety to fellowship. Based on records, publications, and memorabilia from about 150 congregations representing eight denominations, A Spiritual Home gives us a comprehensive, composite portrait of religious life in Victorian Britain and America.
