Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Physical Training and Games: First and Second Grades In preparing this handbook, special care has been taken to omit unnecessary technical terms and to make the commands as simple as possible consistent with clearness. We have made each command to indicate, first, the part of the body involved, then the direction, and finally the movement. For example Trunk sideward - bend. The work of the first four grades consists mainly of free hand exercises, but for the four upper grades we have in cluded dumbbell and wand exercises. Rhythmic steps, song games, folk dances and games for the school room and yard are assigned to each lesson. A special list of appropriate song games, folk dances and playground games is appended to the outline for each grade. These are to be used at the discretion of the teacher. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Exercises in Physical Training, Vol. 1 Since those who do the actual teaching are the ones who should understand the needs and conditions best, all the members of the Physical Training Department were called in conference. This book embodies many features suggested by their experience. It is only when we attain correct and energetic execution on the part of the pupils, when teachers and pupils alike have grasped the purpose of each exercise, so as to be able to detect and correct faulty execution, that we may hope for those results which alone justify teaching this subject. In order that the greatest possible good may accrue to the pupils, the teachers must thoroughly acquaint themselves with the subject matter. The Instructions to Teachers, the descriptions of the exercises, the manner of giving commands, as well as the lessons which are to be given, must be carefully studied. Teachers must also observe closely the work of the special teachers, and learn the best methods of giving a gymnastic lesson. In this way they will learn to use to the best possible advantage the limited time allowed this subject. The lessons must be memorized so that they can be given without reference to the book. There must be a regular time in the daily program for the exercises, and at this time the complete lesson should be given. The conditions under which the work is conducted in the regular class room are not altogether favorable. For this reason the success of the lesson will depend largely upon the attitude of the class teacher. The fidelity and faithful cooperation of the teachers and those in charge of the schools will determine the results attained. This manual contains fifty lessons, each of which is intended to be for two weeks. Each grade will use twenty lessons, as follows. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual for Physical Training in Elementary Schools The object of these exercises is not to build up big muscles or to tax the strength but to produce a sense of well-being. The time required in taking them is so limited that they are not taxing in any sense, but are simple, pleasurable, and exhilarating, even Without regard to the healthful effects produced. The exercises are for the most part directed towards the improvement of the trunk rather than that of the limbs. The trunk contains the vital organs. It is. Like the engine in a motor car. It is here that the organic and functional activities are carried on. It is here that the breathing is done. It is here that the heart operates and the whole digestive tract functions. It is here that the faulty carriage of the body begins and it is here that bad habits and ex cesses make themselves felt. When the breathing is proper, when the operations of digestion are going on normally, when the heart is function ingas it should, one may be assured that the child or pupil is traveling in the direction of health, and it is along this line that these exercises are directed. A few games and plays, to be used as exercises, have also been introduced. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Physical Training for the Primary and Grammer Grades This Hand Book is intended for the public graded schools of Milwaukee. The instructions are imparted directly to the teachers and pupils by trained specialists; it is, therefore, unnecessary to discuss in detail in this book the method of teaching the exercises as well as all other points pertaining to the disposition and handling of classes within and out of doors. The exercises of this outline are designed for the purpose of bringing about the following results in the physical make-up of the school children of the grades: 1. The increase of the circulation and general distribution of the blood by means of vigorous rhythmical action of the larger muscle groups, and a thorough aeration of the blood through deep and somewhat forced respiration. 2. The improvement of chest capacity, of posture and the maintenance thereof. The former is achieved through stretching, certain trunk and neck exercises and forced respiration, and the latter through so-called corrective exercises in standing, sitting, kneeling and balancing. 3. The development of exactness of motion, quickness of response, and a moderate degree of strength through progressively arranged forms of exercises and combinations, as well as properly applied commands and time-measure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Physical Training for Boys and Girls: For Use by Public-School Teachers, Parents, and the Superintendents, of Junior Societies in Churches Tms book is not an argument for strengthening our belief in the efficiency of physical training; rather, it is a short manual which will guide us to some of the best methods of developing the boy and girl. We already have faith in gym nasties and athletics, in games and plays, in competitive sports; but, having nailed our flag to the mast, let us now stand by our guns and protect the boy and the girl by so developing them morally and physically that their own bodies, their own minds, and the ideals that impel them to every voluntary act of life will form a bulwark against the slings and arrows that will assail them throughout their lives. The boy and girl will never get along better by being neglected, they will certainly be well armored and forewarned if they are trained early. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Physical Training in the Schoolroom: A System of Bodily Movements Prepared for the American Schools; A Manual Containing 450 Consecutive Exercises Arranged for Daily Lessons, Graded for Primary, Grammar and Secondary Schools, to Which Is Added Games and Plays The lessons for daily use have been carefully prepared for each schoolyear. Four hundred and fifty different exercises are illustrated by one hundred and thirty-two photo-engravings, and each posit - ion refers directly to an illustration, so' that the teacher is never at a loss to know what is desired. The gradual progression should facilitate the teaching, and at the same time be of endless interest to the pupils. It is, therefore, with considerable confidence that the author places this volume in the hands of the American teacher. He is. At'any time most willing to communicate with the teachers per sonally should anything found in this manual be not quite clear.
