Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Physical Training for Boys and Girls: For Use by Public-School Teachers, Parents, and the Superintendents, of Junior Societies in Churches Tms book is not an argument for strengthening our belief in the efficiency of physical training; rather, it is a short manual which will guide us to some of the best methods of developing the boy and girl. We already have faith in gym nasties and athletics, in games and plays, in competitive sports; but, having nailed our flag to the mast, let us now stand by our guns and protect the boy and the girl by so developing them morally and physically that their own bodies, their own minds, and the ideals that impel them to every voluntary act of life will form a bulwark against the slings and arrows that will assail them throughout their lives. The boy and girl will never get along better by being neglected, they will certainly be well armored and forewarned if they are trained early. You saw those men return to their homes during the Spring and Summer of 1919. You saw their fine physical condition. You noted the wonderful improvement that had been made in the men of your immediate acquaintance who were in the service. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Power and Health Through Progressive Exercise It must not be thought, however, that this book deals wholly with heavy gymnastics, weight-lifting, and feats of strength. Many light exercises are given as being valuable to promote elasticity and suppleness; and, in addi tion to these, - as an apprenticeship of mode rate exercises is absolutely necessary in order that one may become capable of the simplest exhibition of force, - many intermediate exer cises are carefully described, and their effects discussed. The effects of common indoor and outdoor athletic sports and exercises are gone into. All which, it is hoped, will make this volume a complete manual of physical culture, suitable alike for those boys and girls, men and women, who may wish, without the aid of a teacher, to make the best of their bodies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Exercises in Physical Training for Grades I to VIII Inclusive This System of Physical Training was introduced into the Liberty sub-district School during the term of nineteen hundred nine and ten, by its author, Mr. Everett M. Sanders, a graduate of the Posse Normal School of Gymnastics, Boston, Mass. The system is especially adapted to public school room exercise, as it does not require the use of wands, dumb-bells, etc. The pupils do not have to be taken to a special room or gymnasium, nor do they need special clothes, but are ready to practice at any time the teacher may wish. The exercises are sufficiently vigorous, and must prove of benefit to all who honestly and thoroughly carryout the instructions. Owing to the little time needed for them, they can be used frequently to advantage, or even to arouse a room when the children have become somewhat lethargic. A few games and plays, to be used as exercises, have also been introduced. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-20 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pioneers of Modern Physical Training The first edition of pioneers OF modern physical training was merely a reprint in book form of a series of biographical Sketches which appeared in Phy sical Training from month to month between January of 1909 and June of 1910. They were begun with no thought of completeness, and with the idea of furnishing a full - page portrait faced by a page of text. After two instalments had been prepared it was decided to lengthen the remaining articles in order to allow a more adequate treatment. Certain persons whom I desired very much to include in the list were omitted at the time owing to lack of available portraits or the necessary biographi cal data, or because the historical background involved had not yet been sufficiently studied. None of these reasons exists any longer, and I have therefore added the names of Amoros, H jalinar Ling, Brosius, and Betz. Other Sketches have been expanded to make the significance of the subject more apparent and to secure a better balance of parts. The Introduction and Ap pendix are taken from an article published in Physical Training for January and February of 1912 and in the American Physical Education Review for March and April of the same year. It is hoped that in its present form the book may serve as an introduction to the his tory of physical education, and commend itself to teach ers of that subject who desire a manual for use in nor mal schools, leaders' classes, and summer schools. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Physical Training and Games: First and Second Grades In preparing this handbook, special care has been taken to omit unnecessary technical terms and to make the commands as simple as possible consistent with clearness. We have made each command to indicate, first, the part of the body involved, then the direction, and finally the movement. For example Trunk sideward - bend. The work of the first four grades consists mainly of free hand exercises, but for the four upper grades we have in cluded dumbbell and wand exercises. Rhythmic steps, song games, folk dances and games for the school room and yard are assigned to each lesson. A special list of appropriate song games, folk dances and playground games is appended to the outline for each grade. These are to be used at the discretion of the teacher. My own actual need of such a work has been most clearly shown in my capacity of Lecturer in Physical Training in the Faculty of Education, Uni versity of Toronto. Almost daily I have been asked to recommend some work which would enable these embryo school teachers to learn something of their bodies, and the effect of exercise thereon. As these teachers are no further enlightened in the subject of physical training than the general public, it is not necessary to write anything but 'a simple, concise work on the subject. By dividing same into five parts, one is enabled to secure what is wanted without wading through unnecessary reading.
