Book Synopsis IMO/UNEP Guidance Manual on the Assessment and Restoration of Environmental Damage Following Marine Oil Spills by : International Maritime Organization
Download or read book IMO/UNEP Guidance Manual on the Assessment and Restoration of Environmental Damage Following Marine Oil Spills written by International Maritime Organization and published by IMO Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 27 July 2003, the oil tanker Tasman Spirit ran aground spilling a portion of its 67,000-tonne cargo of Iranian Light Crude Oil into Karachi Harbour, in Karachi, Pakistan. The loss of product resulted in environmental damage with heavy oiling of the shoreline in Karachi Harbour and surrounding areas. Recognizing the need for international guidance to assist nations in assessing damage to natural resources following major oil spills in the aftermath of this incident, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), soon thereafter, initiated the development of a manual on natural resource damage assessment and restoration following major oil spills. Given IMO's specialised expertise on preparedness for and response to accidental marine pollution issues and the long history of collaboration between IMO and UNEP, the two organisations agreed to the development of the Manual as a joint publication. With a view to providing operational guidance, the IMO/UNEP Guidance manual on the assessment and restoration of environmental damage following marine oil spills has been developed through the OPRC-HNS Technical Group of the Marine Environment Protection Committee of IMO, in full collaboration and partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme. The objective of the Manual is to provide guidance on strategies that may be used to assess the damage and subsequent recovery of the environment resulting from marine pollution incidents. Available techniques are considered together with criteria to help judge the feasibility of such measures to bring about successful recovery of those environments. The Manual emphasizes the importance of pre-spill planning and provides an overview of assessment techniques and restoration measures in various ecosystems. It also provides guidance on opportunities for compensation through the international oil compensation schemes. Practical examples of natural resource assessment and restoration are provided through a series of case studies.
Book Synopsis New Prospects in Environmental Geosciences and Hydrogeosciences by : Haroun Chenchouni

This book was released on 2022-01-28 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book gives a general overview on current research, focusing on geoenvironmental issues and challenges in hydrogeosciences in model regions in Asia, Europe, and America, with a focus on the Middle East and Mediterranean region and surrounding areas. This proceedings book is based on the accepted papers for oral/poster presentations at the 2nd Springer Conference of the Arabian Journal of Geosciences (CAJG-2), Tunisia 2019. It offers a broad range of recent studies that discuss the latest advances in geoenvironmental and hydrogeosciences from diverse backgrounds including climate change, geoecology, biogeochemistry, water resources management, and environmental monitoring and assessment. It shares insights on how the understanding of ecological, climatological, oceanic and hydrological processes is the key for improving practices in environment management, including the eco-responsibility, scientific integrity, and social and ethical dimensions. It is of interest to scientists, engineers, practitioners, and policymakers in the field of environmental sciences including climatology, oceanography, ecology, biogeochemistry, environmental management, hydrology, hydrogeology, and geosciences in general. In particular, this book is of great value to students and environment-related professionals for further investigations on the state of Earth systems.

Book Synopsis Oil Pollution and its Environmental Impact in the Arabian Gulf Region by : M. Al-Azab
Download or read book Oil Pollution and its Environmental Impact in the Arabian Gulf Region written by M. Al-Azab and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-11-11 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Situated within the richest oil area in the world, the Arabian Gulf represents a stressed ecosystem with scarce published data and environmental studies. The oil-related activities cause significant damages to different ecosystem components such as coral reefs, algal mats, mangrove and other habitats. In addition to the increasing potential of pollution and its adverse effect on the ecosystem, oil spills and relevant implications can severely affect the main source of desalinated water for the Gulf countries due to their limited water resources. Interest in pollution issues associated with Arabian Gulf has been growing in the last few years. These issues include identification and documentation of the major sources of oil pollution in the Gulf region, evaluation of the analytical methods used to identify the different types of pollutants, review of the recent advances in oil pollution impact treatment and prevention, develop stronger cooperation ties between interested members of the community, and encourage awareness of the oil pollution as a serious environmental problem in the region. This book compiles recent studies addressing the above issues grouped in four categories; monitoring and characterizing oil spills, modeling the fate of pollutants and oil slicks in marine water, environmental effects of oil pollution on the ecosystem components, and combating, prevention and treatment of oil pollution.* Studies oil pollution issues in association with the Arabian Gulf* Compiles recent case studies conducted in the Arabian Gulf* Addresses diverse topics related to pollution issues in the marine water in general and in the Arabian Gulf in particular

Book Synopsis Coral Reefs of the Gulf by : Bernhard Riegl
Download or read book Coral Reefs of the Gulf written by Bernhard Riegl and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-04-13 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coral Reefs of the Gulf: Adaptation to Climatic Extremes is a complete review and reference for scientists, engineers and students concerned with the geology, biology or engineering aspects of coral reefs in the Middle East. It provides for the first time a complete review of both the geology and biology of all extant coral areas in the Gulf, the water body between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. In summer, this area is the hottest sea with abundant coral growth on earth and already today exhibits a temperature that is predicted to occur across the topical ocean in 2100. Thus, by studying the Gulf today, much can be learned about tomorrow’s world and the capability of coral reefs to adapt to climatic extremes. This volume provides the most authoritative and up-to-date review of the coral reefs in the Gulf. It can be used as a volume of general reference or as a textbook treating recent coral reefs. Written by local and international experts, the text is richly illustrated and will remain a standard reference for the region for decades to come. Contributions stretch from climatology through geology, biology, ecological modelling and fisheries science to practical conservation aspects. The book is useful for the technical expert and casual reader alike.
