But the new scientific doctrine, so far as it can be said to have established itself in the creed of Naturalists of highest repute, has the effect, I am persuaded, to fortify rather than to weaken the argument of design. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Theology Theology is the science which deals with the Being and Nature of God. Christian Theology is the expression and analysis of the Incarnation of Jesus Christ. All speculation into the First Cause of the world, the ground of moral obligation, even the immortality of the human soul, is or may be theological; that is, any one of these questions may be so discussed as to bring before us the notion of a Supreme Being, who made the world, whose nature is the source of the distinction of right and wrong, who brought man's soul into being, and preserves it continuously from dissolution. On the other hand, all such questions fail to be theological just in proportion as the idea of the Supreme Being is dropped out of sight. They must then be treated as subor dinate sections of physics, or of psychology, or of metaphysics. They take their theological colour from their contact with the idea of a Supreme Being, and no treatment of them apart from this idea is, in the strict sense, theological at all. As for the Being and Nature of God, apart from the Christian revelation of Him, we must derive our knowledge of it from the theological treatment of the questions mentioned above. By reflection upon the order of nature, of a certain kind, we reach the notion of a Creator. By reflection of a certain kind upon the moral law we reach the notion of a Personal Ruler of mankind, who rewards and punishes; and this result leads on to the discussion of the Immorality of Man. These are the contents of Natural Theology, as it is called; and they represent more or less completely the area over which man can move in the way of independent Speculation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Natural Theology It follows from what we have said that in the Scholastic philosophy Natural Theology is no um essential adjunct, no mere afterthought, but a substantive and vital part of the system, without which it would be radically incomplete. It claims to establish from assured first principles the exist ence of'a Supreme Being, distinct from the finite and mutable things of experience. It maintains, further, that though the limitations of the human intellect render all our knowledge of Him inade quate, we are not wholly ignorant of His nature. There are certain attributes which can be affirmed of Him with certainty, though they are His in a manner more 'perfect than any which we can imagine. Above all, He is' intelligent and free, and therefore possessed of personality. In Him it finds the source and origin of all finite beings, and the final cause in view of which such beings exist. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Natural Theology: Based Upon the Doctrine of Evolution Dear Dr. Sanday, My attention to the subject of Natural Theology has been chiefly due to the encouragement I received from you, when many years ago, after a sermon preached in the Chapel of Bishop Hatfield's Hall, you expressed a desire to hear more from me on the subject of Darwinism in relation to Theology. And the unfailing sympathy and kindness you have shown towards me throughout the years in which, amid many distractions, this work has slowly grown and reached completion - in how imperfect a form I am only too conscious - moves me to ask you to permit your name to be associated with it, and to accept it from me as an expression of my gratitude. I have also to thank you, and Dr. Robertson, your successor at Durham, for the cheerful readiness with which, under the pressure of other engagements, you undertook to read the proof sheets; and for the many valuable suggestions which you and Dr. Robertson have made. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Theology and Genesis A natural theology treats of the existence and character of God as these may be known from reason and nature. A natural theology in its relations to Genesis accredits the form of the argument and the sequence of the thought to inspiration. We feel warranted in this contradictory form of title from the fact, that on a close analysis of the record of creation the argument proceeds in the steps followed by those who have discussed the question in a natural theology, presenting their evidences from the ontological, the cosmological, the teleological, and the moral sources. If now we attempt to write an exposition on the record of creation we naturally fall into this line of argument. And it is found on close analysis of the record of creation, that God has already given us a work on natural theology. The last point is drawn out at great length in other parts of scripture, and we further note, that if we would formulate our theology faultlessly we must follow the Word of God. It is found also that when we have written our natural theology we have also written a satisfactory exposition on the record of creation. In this theses on natural theology we endeavor to follow the sequence of thought as given by inspiration because of its comprehensiveness, and also for the purpose of bringing into review the relation that exists between the creations and the record of them given by inspiration. Endeavoring if possible to remove some difficulties that have been in the way of a correct understanding of the theology as we think it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Natural Theology: Or Evidences of the Existence and Attributes of the Deity, Collected From the Appearances of Nature It was the original design of the publishers to have merely attached the plates and references Of Paxton, which have been published m England and m this country in a separate volume, to the text of Dr. Paley. It Was, however, suggested to them that the value of their edition might be increased by the addition of Notes, and they had made arrangements for this purpose and were going on with the Work, when Mr. Paxton' s' edition of the Natural' Theology fell into their hands, containing, beside the plates, a cons1de1 able number of Notes. From these notes a selection has been' made of such as seemed most valuable and interesting. A' number of Notes have also been made up of quotations from the excellent treatise of Mr. Charles Bell on Animal Mechanics, published In the Library of Useful Knowledge a tract which cannot 'be too highly recommended to the perusal of those Who take pleasure m studying the indications of a wise and be nevolent Providence in the works Of creation.
