Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1997, this volume examines the implications of Japanese corporate practices post-World War II for the experiences of capital markets in modern developing economies based on theoretical and empirical analyses of Bangladeshi and Japanese markets. It aims to explore sensible approach, rather than panacea solutions, to issues of making a conducive environment for rapid growth. Japanese capital markets have evolved continuously since the war and M. Farid Ahmed suggests that traditional practices have been adapted to a much more complex reality. Ahmed executes this study through consideration of issues including the private sector, government policy, corporate financing, stock prices and capital market theory.
Download or read book Making It Big written by Andrea Ciani and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2020-10-08 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic and social progress requires a diverse ecosystem of firms that play complementary roles. Making It Big: Why Developing Countries Need More Large Firms constitutes one of the most up-to-date assessments of how large firms are created in low- and middle-income countries and their role in development. It argues that large firms advance a range of development objectives in ways that other firms do not: large firms are more likely to innovate, export, and offer training and are more likely to adopt international standards of quality, among other contributions. Their particularities are closely associated with productivity advantages and translate into improved outcomes not only for their owners but also for their workers and for smaller enterprises in their value chains. The challenge for economic development, however, is that production does not reach economic scale in low- and middle-income countries. Why are large firms scarcer in developing countries? Drawing on a rare set of data from public and private sources, as well as proprietary data from the International Finance Corporation and case studies, this book shows that large firms are often born large—or with the attributes of largeness. In other words, what is distinct about them is often in place from day one of their operations. To fill the “missing top†? of the firm-size distribution with additional large firms, governments should support the creation of such firms by opening markets to greater competition. In low-income countries, this objective can be achieved through simple policy reorientation, such as breaking oligopolies, removing unnecessary restrictions to international trade and investment, and establishing strong rules to prevent the abuse of market power. Governments should also strive to ensure that private actors have the skills, technology, intelligence, infrastructure, and finance they need to create large ventures. Additionally, they should actively work to spread the benefits from production at scale across the largest possible number of market participants. This book seeks to bring frontier thinking and evidence on the role and origins of large firms to a wide range of readers, including academics, development practitioners and policy makers.

Book Synopsis Project Analysis For Local Development by : Om Prakash Mathur
Download or read book Project Analysis For Local Development written by Om Prakash Mathur and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing importance of local-level planning in developing countries and disillusionment with highly theoretical, sophisticated methodologies have prompted the creation of this simple-to-use manual for planners and administrators seeking to identify, evaluate, and select local-level development projects. This book outlines information required for thorough project evaluation, sources of that information (including alternative approaches to data collection), methods of analysis (with detailed explanations of their strengths and weaknesses), and techniques for organizing the results for purposes of decision making. Unlike many abstract procedural guides for development that require substantial data and technical manpower --two resources usually unavailable at local levels—this book is meant for planners and administrators who have had little or no formal training in project analysis and planning. Mr. Mathur supplements his step-by-step methodology with explanations of how and when to make appropriate and effective use of the techniques

Book excerpt: This book is written as a tribute to Frederick Nixson’s extensive work on industrial development in the Global South, while seeking to actively engage with the latest arguments concerning development economics, together with changes in manufacturing and industrial policy that continue to shape the role of the Global South in the international economy, the impact of the increased concentration of global multinational corporations in that space, along with the rise of new financing tools and debt traps. The book targets both the scholarly and policymaking audience.
Book Synopsis Project Appraisal and Valuation of the Environment by : P. Abelson
Download or read book Project Appraisal and Valuation of the Environment written by P. Abelson and published by Springer. This book was released on 1996-06-12 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The book is a pioneering attempt to see exactly what difference economic valuation of environmental effects would have made to six actual, on-going, development projects, if it had been done at the time of appraisal. It combines theoretical rigour with applied economic skills, presented with robust common sense.' - James Winpenny, Overseas Development Institute This book is a practical and readable guide to valuing the environment and the implications for public investment and policy, useful for students as well as professional economists, policy-makers, engineers, environmental and social planners. It describes how the environment can be valued and how these valuation concepts can be applied to investment decisions. The book provides first a general introduction to the key issues and concepts, considering the nature and magnitude of environmental problems, the cost-benefit method of evaluation and detailed methods for valuing the environment. It then analyses in detail six case-studies, based on actual or proposed major investment projects by the UK Overseas Development Administration or the World Bank. These include water quality in China, the supply of electricity in Bangladesh, slum improvements in India, mass transit in Nigeria, forest conservation in Kenya and soil quality in Bolivia. Thus the book is expected to be of special interest to professionals and students in developing countries, although much of the material has general application in developed as well as in developing countries.
