Book excerpt: Cyanobacteria constitute the most widely distributed group of photosynthetic prokaryotes found in almost all realms of the earth and play an important role in Earth's nitrogen and carbon cycle. The gradual transformation from reducing atmosphere to oxidizing atmosphere was a turning point in the evolutionary history of the earth and made conditions for present life forms possible. Cyanobacteria: From Basic Science to Applications is the first reference volume that comprehensively discusses all aspects of cyanobacteria, including the diverse mechanisms of cyanobacteria for the advancement of cyanobacterial abilities, towards higher biofuel productivity, enhanced tolerance to environmental stress and bioactive compounds and potential for biofertilizers. - Describes cyanobacterial diversity, stress biology, and biotechnological aspects of cyanobacteria - Explores the global importance of cyanobacteria - Provides a broad compilation of research that deals with cyanobacterial stress responses in both controlled laboratory conditions as well as in their natural environment

Book excerpt: Water: an Elixir of Life Water is a dynamic system and important natural resource. It contains living as well as non living, organic and inorganic and also soluble and insoluble substances. Its constituent varies with time. Any change in the natural composition causes disturbances to the equilibrium system. This result in the degradation of water making it unfit for desirable use (Murhekar, G.H., 2011 and Maiti S.K., 2011). Water is the essence of life which dominates completely in chemical composition of all organisms. The surface water and ground water resources of any nation plays a major role in industrial, agriculture, live stock production, forestry and fisheries, hydropower generation, navigation and recreational activities etc. (Kadam et al., 2014). India receives about 1400-1800 mm of rainfall annually. It is estimated that 96% of this water is used for agriculture, 3% for domestic use and 1% for industrial activity. An analysis conducted in 1982 revealed that about 70% of all the available and the unavailable water in our country is polluted (Dara and Mishra, 2014).

Shifting Agriculture, Commercial Logging) And Also Due To Frequent Landslides In The Hills And Floods In The Valleys. In This Region, Most Forested Lands Are Owned By Indigenous People, But Lack Authentic Policies For Land Use And Landholding. The Resource Management Patterns Vary Among The Tribal Groups And Have A Tremendous Bearing On The Resource Economics. Further, Concerns Have Increased On The Linkages Between Biological Diversity And Climate Change. Therefore, Assessment And Monitoring Biodiversity Has Been Crucial, Both In Terms Of Dimensions And Scale Of The Problem. Nevertheless, There Has Been A Growing Interest On The Adaptive Management Of Ecosystem Based Or The Traditional Ecological Knowledge Of The Traditional Ecological Knowledge Of The Indigenous People And/Or Intergrating Such Knowledge Into Policy Interventions. This Synthesis Volume Is An Attempt To Consummate The Ecological Issues Of Biodiversity Utilization And Conservation With That Of Socio-Cultural And Economic Dimensions That Would Help Have A Holistic View On Natural Resources Management For Biological Conservation. In The Present Book 23 Chapters Covering Broad Aspects Of Biodiversity Utilization, Traditional Land Use Systems And Their Conservation Have Been Presented By Various Experts Based On Case Studies Carried Out In Different Parts Of The Himalyan Region. Traditional Bio-Resource Utilization And Their Conservation Practices Among Different Tribes Inhabiting In Northeast India Have Also Been Documented In This Book Apart From The Status Of Biological Diversity In Different Habitat Conditions Ranging From Agroforest And Cropland To Wetlands And Protected Areas.
