Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Early Ecclesiastical History: To 476 A. D The object of this series is to provide for the clergy and laity of the Church a statement, in convenient form, of its Doctrine, Discipline and Worship - as well as to meet the often expressed desire on the part of Examining Chaplains for textbooks which they could recommend to candidates for Holy Orders. To satisfy, on the one hand, the demand of general readers among the clergy and laity, the books have been provided with numerous references to larger works, making them introductory in their nature; and on the other hand, to make them valuable for use in canonical examinations, they have been arranged according to the canons of the Church which deal with that matter. It is the earnest hope of the collaborators in this series that the impartial scholarship and unbiased attitude adopted throughout will commend themselves to Churchmen of all types, and that the books will therefore be accorded a general reception and adopted as far as possible as a norm for canonical examinations. The need of such a norm is well known to all. And finally a word to Examining Chaplains. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Ecclesiastical History by : Eusebius
Download or read book The Ecclesiastical History written by Eusebius and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2023-11-11 with total page 954 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ecclesiastical History by Eusebius, the bishop of Caesarea, was a 4th-century pioneer work giving a chronological account of the development of Early Christianity from the 1st century to the 4th century. It was written in Koine Greek, and survives also in Latin, Syriac and Armenian manuscripts. Eusebius had access to the Theological Library of Caesarea and made use of many ecclesiastical monuments and documents, acts of the martyrs, letters, extracts from earlier Christian writings, lists of bishops, and similar sources, often quoting the originals at great length so that his work contains materials not elsewhere preserved. The result was the first full-length historical narrative written from a Christian point of view.

Excerpt: ...some few have been published separately, but many more are to be found in different Bibliothecas of the Fathers, among the works of Sirmondus, the miscellanies of Baluzius, and Spicilegia of D'Archerius. Gildas, S. Columbanus, and Isidore, respectively left works CENT. behind them, which do not however require separate notice: '--and having mentioned S. Benedict as the author of his celebrated rule, we shall connect his history with a new head, namely monks and monasteries. S. Benedict was born at the Umbrian Nursia A.D. 480, 10. and of the illustrious family of the Anicii. He began his asce-Order"'0 ticism at the early age of fourteen, in a solitary retreat called s. Benedict Sublacum, about forty miles from Rome. Here he even-the monastually established twelve monasteries, each containing twelvetic order8monks. Afterwards Mount Cassino became his residence, from whence, A.D. 531, he was summoned by Boniface II. to attend a Roman synod. He died about A.D. 542 or 3, and the marvels of his life are elaborately described by S. Gregory the Great in the second book of his Dialogues. His rule has gone through innumerable editions. S. Benedict is to be considered the developer rather than Perpetual the author of the coenobite life: though he was perhaps the imposed' first who introduced a perpetual vow into his regulations. A probation of twelve months preceded admission, during which time the rule was thrice read to the candidate, who promised the most implicit obedience before he could be received into the brotherhood. Otherwise too the system assumed a more formal character, --nocturns, matins, tierce, sexts, nones, vespers, and compline, the seven canonical hours as they are Canonical called, are respectively enjoined and...
Book Synopsis Eusebius and Empire by : James Corke-Webster
Download or read book Eusebius and Empire written by James Corke-Webster and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eusebius' Ecclesiastical History, written in the early fourth century, continues to serve as our primary gateway to a crucial three hundred year period: the rise of early Christianity under the Roman Empire. In this volume, James Corke-Webster undertakes the first systematic study considering the History in the light of its fourth-century circumstances as well as its author's personal history, intellectual commitments, and literary abilities. He argues that the Ecclesiastical History is not simply an attempt to record the past history of Christianity, but a sophisticated mission statement that uses events and individuals from that past to mould a new vision of Christianity tailored to Eusebius' fourth-century context. He presents elite Graeco-Roman Christians with a picture of their faith that smooths off its rough edges and misrepresents its size, extent, nature, and relationship to Rome. Ultimately, Eusebius suggests that Christianity was - and always had been - the Empire's natural heir.
