In less than two years this little book has reached its third edition, and al though not intended as a complete work on medical diagnosis, it has met the requirements of the student, by affording him an easy method of learning the most characteristic symptoms of diseases and their diagnosis, and the busy practitioner by furnishing him differential diagnosis tables of all diseases liable to be confounded one with another. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Diagnosis: Special Diagnosis of Internal Medicine; A Handbook for Physicians and Students Wheiv a student of medicine in Germany, the Diagnosis of Leube always impressed itself upon the editor as a plain, practical work which described disease and the various differential points in such a lucid man ner that it has always been his wish to give to the English-reading pro fessionthe advantages of this storehouse of bedside knowledge. The fact that a medical work has appeared in its sixth edition in the course of twelve years is sufficient evidence of its value. The main features of this text-book consist in the explicit difierential diagnoses. If it is true that rational treatment depends upon the accuracy of diagnosis, the fundamen tal requirements of the therapist will be diagnosis in its broadest sense; not only the ability to recognise the true nature of the affection, but the knowledge of its course, complications and eventual termination. 'the author has been signally successful in presenting some of the most difficult problems of the diagnosis of Internal Diseases in a clear, concise man ner, never attempting the impossible. The original character of the work has been preserved as an index to or as an abstract of more pretentious works on the subject. They thrust forward, like a soldier who presents arms, a complaint such as pain, cough, or nervousness, so that it occupies the foreground of the clinical picture. Such a presenting symptom, comparable to the presenting par in obstetrics, may turn out to be of minor im portance when we have studied the whole case. But at the outset it has the power to lead us toward right or wrong conclusions in diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment, according as we have or have not learned the art of following it up. This book is an attempt to study medicine from the point of view of the presenting symptom. I hope to show how the complaints of the patient - fragmentary expressions of the underlying disease - should be used as leads, and how their lead can be followed to the actual seat of the disease. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Differential Diagnosis and Treatment of Disease: A d104-Book for Practitioners and Advanced Students To bring the broad domain of practical medicine fairly within the grasp of the family physician, and to assist the advanced student in acquiring a clin ical foundation has been my aim. The general practitioner, representing the unity and connection of the various branches of medical practice, must grasp the practical details of his art in order to be useful at the bedside; and a book to be of value to the family physician should convey clinical experience Without the exhaustive and often purely theoretical details to be found and sought for in monographs. Such a work I have endeavored to write. It has been my desire to reestablish the relations of internal medicine, surgery, and the several specialties; for this reason I have presented special istic methods from the view - point of the general clinician. Disease is neither medical nor surgical nor does it hover on the border lines, but the treatment of disease has become more surgical and the arbitrary division into medical and surgical disease is no longer tenable. This unitarian principle should not be ignored in the presentation of disease, and many methods of diag nosis and treatment originally worked out by the specialist have become, or should become, common property. Drugs no longer dominate our therapeutics; therefore the prominence given to hygienic, prophylactic, dietetic, hydrotherapeutic, and physical methods of treatment. At the same time Well-tried and valuable formulae are distributed throughout the book. In prescription writing the apothecaries' weight and not the metric system has been used. However, simple rules for converting one into the other are given. The special chapters on the Technique of Diagnosis and Laboratory Aids, on Paediatrics, and the various specialties, on diseases of the Osseous, Muscular, and Articular System, on Nutrition and Diet, on the Management of Dropsy and Effusion, on Massage, Vibration, Dry Hot Air Treatment, Poisons and Anaesthesia, it is to be hoped will not be an unwelcome addition to a book on practice. Each chapter is prefaced by a synopsis of its contents and by brief introductory remarks on the clinical pathology of its subjects. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual Medical Diagnosis: Being an Analysis of the Signs and Symptoms of Disease The ultimate object of study in all departments of medicine the object which must ever be kept in view alike by teacher and pupil - is the relief of the patient by the successful treatment of disease. To this end the properties of various remedial agents are taught in Materia Medica, as they possess the power of neutralizing or eliminating poisons, of counteracting morbid action in its progress or modifying its results, and of aiding and sustaining the powers of life, when those wonderful laws of our economy come into operation, by which the destructive agency of noxious in uences is combated, and the useless and effete or injured tissues are extruded from the body. To the same end the student must acquire a knowledge of the various structures of the body and the functions of its organs in health, as well as the pathological changes in solids and uids, which become the subjects of anatomical research, and perversions of healthy function which may be traced at the bedside in the pro gress of disease: these belong to the domain of Physiology and Pathology. The theory of disease, again, combines, by the aid of experience, the perversion of function with the change of structure, deducing the symptoms observed as a necessary sequence from the disturbance of the laws of health to which such changes must give rise; but it also teaches us that there are other and more hidden ele ments of disease, stamped in their operation on the human frame, with characters no less marked and distinct, which have yet evaded our most diligent search. This department divides itself into two branches: it points out the alliances and differences between various forms of disease and the prominent features by which they are characterized, and to this the name of Nosology has been applied; while under the name of Semeiology it especially treats of the symptoms of diseased action which each organ or region of the body is capable of manifesting. It is the province of Diagnosis to com bine together these various lessons, and by the application of the symptomatology of disease in general to any particular case, to arrive at a just conclusion regarding its true nature and pathology.
