Labourers engaged in jobs which require extensive lifting/lowering, carrying and pushing/pulling of heavy materials have suffered increasing rates of musculo-skeletal injury, especially to the back.; This guide is intended to include all activities involved in MMH lifting, pushing, pulling, carrying and holding. Recommendations are provided in the form of design data that can be used to design different MMH work activities. The guide is divided into two parts. Part I outlines the scope of the problem, discusses the factors that influence a person's capacity to perform MMH activities and / or should be modified to reduce the risk of injuries, and reviews the various design approaches to solving the MMH problem. Part II provides specific design data in six distinct chapters. The seventh chapter of Part II of the guide describes various mechanical devices that are available to aid MMH activities.; The guide is aimed at all concerned with the health impact of MMH activities; occupational health and safety workers; senior human resource managers; ergonomists; workers' compensation lawyers; union representatives.

Book excerpt: A thorough explanation of the quantifying of manual lifting. The failure to match strength to task costs billions of dollars each year in medical and compensation payments. Ayoub and Mital argue forcefully for pre-employment testing of manual workers. They cover variables in materials handling tasks, mechanics of lifting, pulling and pushing, carrying and supporting loads, proper training, and suitable rest periods. Book excerpt: Commonly used throughout the world, manual lifting tasks—whether simple or complex—all involve variable loads, postures, and movements. This practical guide discusses how to analyze the intricate lifting function and prevent injury during its execution. Outlining revised NIOSH Lifting Equation (RNLE) methods, the book illustrates their use in assessing manual lifting tasks of varying degrees of difficulty. Using examples to reinforce presented concepts, it explains how RNLE methods can be applied to evaluate single, composite, variable, and sequential lifting tasks. It also explores how to interpret and apply the results according to international standards and guidelines.

Book excerpt: The problem of injuries from manual materials handling in industry has shown little improvement over many years; the injuries account for 20% to 30% of all injuries in many countries. During 1974, a NIOSH committee produced a report (CDC-99-74-118, Herrin, Chaffin, and Mach) outlining future research needs in this area. These research needs were only able to be prioritized in a relatively simple manner at the time. Following this report, the need was felt for a mechanism to obtain national and international input to help shape NIOSH research policy in the field of Manual Materials Handling Safety. The mechan◆ism chosen to obtain this input was an International Symposium: Safety in Manual Materials Handling, which was held at the State University of New York at Buffalo in July 1976. The objectives of the symposium, and of this book reporting its findings, were two-fold: ~to present a logical and consistent framework for summarizing current knowledge in the field; ~to utilize the expertise of the international community to prioritize future research by NIOSH within the context of research proceeding in other countries. These objectives were accomplished by inviting respected members of the research and safety communities to review parts of the field, thus presenting cur◆rent knowledge in a coherent manner. Twenty-four papers were presented. These began with an overview of the needs of NIOSH, proceeded through a review of the sub-systems of the body stressed in these tasks, continued with numerical models of human performance and safety, reviewed the factors that can affect performance, and ended with problems of implementation of research. In addi◆tion to the speakers, other prominent figures in the field were invited to chair ses◆sions and lead workshops. A number of industries also sent representatives. The research areas above are presented as chapters in this book, with a final chapter summarizing the results of three goal-oriented workshops that took place on the final day of the symposium. The findings of these workshops are sum◆marized in the final recommendations. It is recommended that any future safety standard must include, as a minimum, the weight, size, and position of the load handled and its frequency of handling, as well as indicate which loads need preplacement testing of workers. Future research needs are for improved diagnosis, reporting and job description procedures, new epidemiological studies to determine the effect of particular fac◆tors, and studies to enable the effectiveness of any proposed standard to be esti◆mated.

Book excerpt: p="" This highly informative and carefully presented book focuses on the fields of ergonomics/human factors and discusses the future of the community vis-à-vis health problems, productivity, aging, etc. Ergonomic intercession must be seen in light of its effect on productivity because ergonomic solutions will improve productivity as the reduction of environmental stressors, awkward postures and efforts lead to a reduction in task execution time. The book provides promising evidence that the field of ergonomics continues to thrive and develop deeper insights into how work environments, products and systems can be developed to meet needs, demands and limitations of humans and how they can support productivity improvements. Some of the themes covered are anthropometry and workplace design, biomechanics and modelling in ergonomics, cognitive and environmental ergonomics, ergonomic intervention and productivity, ergonomics in transport, mining, agriculture and forestry, health systems, work physiology and sports ergonomics, etc. This book is beneficial to academicians, policymakers and the industry alike. ^

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Production ergonomics – the science and practice of designing industrial workplaces to optimize human well-being and system performance – is a complex challenge for a designer. Humans are a valuable and flexible resource in any system of creation, and as long as they stay healthy, alert and motivated, they perform well and also become more competent over time, which increases their value as a resource. However, if a system designer is not mindful or aware of the many threats to health and system performance that may emerge, the end result may include inefficiency, productivity losses, low working morale, injuries and sick-leave. To help budding system designers and production engineers tackle these design challenges holistically, this book offers a multi-faceted orientation in the prerequisites for healthy and effective human work. We will cover physical, cognitive and organizational aspects of ergonomics, and provide both the individual human perspective and that of groups and populations, ending up with a look at global challenges that require workplaces to become more socially and economically sustainable. This book is written to give you a warm welcome to the subject, and to provide a solid foundation for improving industrial workplaces to attract and retain healthy and productive staff in the long run.
