Book excerpt: If normal aircraft flight controls are lost, emergency flight control may be attempted using only engines thrust. Collective thrust is used to control flightpath, and differential thrust is used to control bank angle. Flight test and simulation results on many airplanes have shown that pilot manipulation of throttles is usually adequate to maintain up-and-away flight, but is most often not capable of providing safe landings. There are techniques that will improve control and increase the chances of a survivable landing. This paper reviews the principles of throttles-only control (TOC), a history of accidents or incidents in which some or all flight controls were lost, manual TOC results for a wide range of airplanes from simulation and flight, and suggested techniques for flying with throttles only and making a survivable landing.Burcham, Frank W., Jr. and Fullerton, C. Download or read book Sense and Avoid in UAS written by Plamen Angelov and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-03-16 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is increasing interest in the potential of UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) and MAV (Micro Air Vehicle) technology and their wide ranging applications including defence missions, reconnaissance and surveillance, border patrol, disaster zone assessment and atmospheric research. High investment levels from the military sector globally is driving research and development and increasing the viability of autonomous platforms as replacements for the remotely piloted vehicles more commonly in use. UAV/UAS pose a number of new challenges, with the autonomy and in particular collision avoidance, detect and avoid, or sense and avoid, as the most challenging one, involving both regulatory and technical issues. Sense and Avoid in UAS: Research and Applications covers the problem of detect, sense and avoid in UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) in depth and combines the theoretical and application results by leading academics and researchers from industry and academia. Key features: Presents a holistic view of the sense and avoid problem in the wider application of autonomous systems Includes information on human factors, regulatory issues and navigation, control, aerodynamics and physics aspects of the sense and avoid problem in UAS Provides professional, scientific and reliable content that is easy to understand, and Includes contributions from leading engineers and researchers in the field Sense and Avoid in UAS: Research and Applications is an invaluable source of original and specialised information. It acts as a reference manual for practising engineers and advanced theoretical researchers and also forms a useful resource for younger engineers and postgraduate students. With its credible sources and thorough review process, Sense and Avoid in UAS: Research and Applications provides a reliable source of information in an area that is fast expanding but scarcely covered.
Book Synopsis Fault Detection and Fault-Tolerant Control Using Sliding Modes by : Halim Alwi
Download or read book Fault Detection and Fault-Tolerant Control Using Sliding Modes written by Halim Alwi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fault Detection and Fault-tolerant Control Using Sliding Modes is the first text dedicated to showing the latest developments in the use of sliding-mode concepts for fault detection and isolation (FDI) and fault-tolerant control in dynamical engineering systems. It begins with an introduction to the basic concepts of sliding modes to provide a background to the field. This is followed by chapters that describe the use and design of sliding-mode observers for FDI using robust fault reconstruction. The development of a class of sliding-mode observers is described from first principles through to the latest schemes that circumvent minimum-phase and relative-degree conditions. Recent developments have shown that the field of fault tolerant control is a natural application of the well-known robustness properties of sliding-mode control. A family of sliding-mode control designs incorporating control allocation, which can deal with actuator failures directly by exploiting redundancy, is presented. Various realistic case studies, specifically highlighting aircraft systems and including results from the implementation of these designs on a motion flight simulator, are described. A reference and guide for researchers in fault detection and fault-tolerant control, this book will also be of interest to graduate students working with nonlinear systems and with sliding modes in particular. Advances in Industrial Control aims to report and encourage the transfer of technology in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of new work in all aspects of industrial control.

Book Synopsis Lockheed F-80 Shooting Star Pilot's Flight Operating Manual by : United States Air Force

This book was released on 2007-08-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed by Lockheed's legendary engineer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson, the F-80 (first designated P-80) "Shooting Star" was one of the world's first operational jet fighter aircraft. After it missed seeing combat in WWII - four prototype aircraft were in Europe at war's end - the plane drew first blood in Korea in 1950. Variants included a photo recon version and the two-seat T-33, both of which saw heavy service in air forces around the world. Originally printed by Lockheed and the United States Air Force in the 1950s, this F-80 Flight Operating Manual taught pilots everything they needed to know before entering the cockpit. Classified "Restricted," the manual was recently declassified and is here reprinted in book form. This affordable facsimile has been reformatted and color images appear in black and white. Care has been taken however to preserve the integrity of the text.
Book Synopsis Douglas Skystreak and Skyrocket Flight Operating Manual by : United States Air Force
Download or read book Douglas Skystreak and Skyrocket Flight Operating Manual written by United States Air Force and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-09 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The D-558 aircraft were part of a transonic research program originated by NACA and the U.S. Navy. The D-558-1 Skystreak turbojet was designed in 1945 and first flew in 1947 at Muroc. It quickly set a new world speed record of over 650 miles per hour. Although it approached Mach 1.0 in level flight, the Skystreak could only break the speed of sound in a dive. The successor aircraft, the D-558-2 Skyrocket, was equipped with a turbojet and the same rocket system as Bell¿s X-1. The jet was used for takeoff and landing, and the rockets allowed the aircraft to travel into the transonic zone. The Skyrocket test program began in 1948. In 1953, Scott Cross- field bested that mark and flew into aviation history when he became the first person to reach Mach 2.0 in the plane. Originally printed by the U.S. Navy, NACA and Douglas, this book contains manuals for both of these amazing aircraft. Originally classified ¿Restricted¿, they have been declassified and are here reprinted in book form.

Book Synopsis North American FJ-3 Fury Pilot's Flight Operating Instructions by : United States Navy
Download or read book North American FJ-3 Fury Pilot's Flight Operating Instructions written by United States Navy and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2008-09-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On March 10, 1948, an FJ-1 Fury fighter landed aboard the carrier Boxer. The U.S. Navy had officially entered the jet age. Built by North American, the Fury shared a prototype with the Air Force¿s F-86 Sabre. When the FJ-1¿s straight wing design proved less than satisfactory, North American provided the Navy with enhanced F-86Es. Designated the FJ-2, the plane flew primarily with the U.S. Marine Corps. An enhanced version, the FJ-3, debuted in 1953 and was deployed in late 1954. The plane served in a variety of duties, including as control aircraft for the Navy¿s Regulus nuclear cruise missile. The Fury remained with the fleet into the early 1960¿s. Over 1,100 were produced. This pilot¿s flight operating handbook was originally produced by the U.S. Navy. It has been slightly reformatted but is reproduced here in its entirety.
