Book excerpt: Occupations such as paramedics, police, firefighters, construction, and military require manual lifting and load-carrying. Such occupations demand use of the hand and finger muscles and therefore changes in strength and manual dexterity could affect task performance. The purpose of this study is to examine the short-term changes in pinch strength, grip strength, and manual dexterity with exercise and load carriage. We hypothesized that pinch strength, grip strength, and manual dexterity will change after exercise. Methods: Thirty-four participants (24 male 10 female; mean ± SD of 25 ± 4.8 yrs; 173.9 ± 14.8 cm height; 79.2 ± 14.0 kg mass) completed 3 exercise conditions each for 5 minutes: (1) seated rest with no exercise (2) run with no load at 3.0 m/s on a treadmill and (3) run at 3.0 m/s on a treadmill while carrying 9.1 kg on a weighted belt. Results: Heart rate was significantly different among all conditions (p≤0.05) and demonstrated that moderate to vigorous exercise was achieved during the running conditions. Pinch strength for males was significantly different for the non-dominant hand after exercise (p=0.005), however pinch strength did not change after exercise for the dominant hand (p=0.413). Hand grip strength for males was significantly different for the non-dominant hand between the loaded and unloaded run (p=0.035). Female pinch and grip strength did not change significantly for either hand after exercise. Manual dexterity times were not different after exercise. However, manual dexterity times for females were significantly faster for dominant (p=0.039) and non-dominant hands (p=0.019) when compared to males. Conclusion: Pinch strength, grip strength and manual dexterity times were maintained for the dominant hand after exercise, but exercise affected pinch and grip strength for the non-dominant hand for males. Therefore, personnel who use their hands at work may maintain strength and dexterity for their dominant hand after short exercise bouts and consequently maintain the ability to perform job specific manual tasks after exertion.
