Download or read book Free Trade & Uneven Development written by Gary Gereffi and published by Temple University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-12 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume addresses many of the complex issues raised by North American integration through the lens of one of the largest and most global industries in the region: textiles and apparel. In part, this is a story of winners and losers in the globalization process, especially if one focuses on jobs lost and jobs gained in different countries and communities within North America, defined here as: Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. However, it would be a mistake to view the industry solely in these zerosum terms. The North American apparel industry is an excellent illustration of larger trends in the global economy, in which regional divisions of labor appear to be one of the most stable and effective responses to globalization. The contributors to this volume are an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars who have all done detailed fieldwork at the firm and factory levels in one or more countries of North America. Taken together the essays offer theoretical and methodological innovations built around the intersection of the global commodity chains and industrial districts literatures, as well as innovative approaches to studying the impact of cross-national, interfirm networks in terms of production and trade issues, and local development outcomes for workers and communities.

Book Synopsis The Palgrave International Handbook of Mixed Racial and Ethnic Classification by : Zarine L. Rocha
Download or read book The Palgrave International Handbook of Mixed Racial and Ethnic Classification written by Zarine L. Rocha and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-01-03 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook provides a global study of the classification of mixed race and ethnicity at the state level, bringing together a diverse range of country case studies from around the world. The classification of race and ethnicity by the state is a common way to organize and make sense of populations in many countries, from the national census and birth and death records, to identity cards and household surveys. As populations have grown, diversified, and become increasingly transnational and mobile, single and mutually exclusive categories struggle to adequately capture the complexity of identities and heritages in multicultural societies. State motivations for classification vary widely, and have shifted over time, ranging from subjugation and exclusion to remediation and addressing inequalities. The chapters in this handbook illustrate how differing histories and contemporary realities have led states to count and classify mixedness in different ways, for different reasons. This collection will serve as a key reference point on the international classification of mixed race and ethnicity for students and scholars across sociology, ethnic and racial studies, and public policy, as well as policy makers and practitioners.
Book Synopsis Women, Gender and Conditional Cash Transfers by : Teresa Sacchet
Download or read book Women, Gender and Conditional Cash Transfers written by Teresa Sacchet and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-01 with total page 211 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conditional Cash Transfer Programs have been widely used throughout less developed countries to fight poverty and foster socioeconomic development. In Women, Gender and Conditional Cash Transfers, a multidisciplinary group of feminist scholars use survey data analysis, in-depth interviews, and ethnographic and archival research to explore the extent to which Bolsa Familia in Brazil contributes to women ́s autonomy and improves gender relations. Comprised of nine chapters, written by authors from different regions of Brazil, this book captures perspectives from across Brazil to explain these regional social inequalities and provide historical, and up-to-date, insights of this program from a feminist perspective. The authors are able to move beyond conventional feminist knowledge on CCTs, women and gender relations, through considering questions of gender raised in the specialized literature related to Bolsa Familia, and by addressing concerns of intersectional categories such as race, ethnicity, age and geographic location, Women, Gender and Conditional Cash Transfers will be of great interest not only to scholars of Latin American politics, but also to students of development policy, public policy and gender.
