Lo que se trata aquí son los temas de semántica que aparecen cuando consideramos las estructuras complejas originadas de la combinación gramatical de palabras y, por encima de todas, la estructura proposicional. El trabajo tiene cuatro grandes bloques. El primero es sobre los principios básicos específicos de la semántica combinatoria: su relación con la gramática, la recursividad y el principio de composicionalidad, los límites con la pragmática, etc. En el segundo bloque se detalla esta compleja relación entre significados y proposiciones, teniendo en cuenta que la proposición es la entidad lógica que se corresponde con lo que intuitivamente llamaríamos “pensamiento”. En el desarrollo de esta cuestión general se tratan también los casos en que un significado se asocia con varias proposiciones, los casos en que una misma oración tiene varios significados o los casos en que dos oraciones con dos significados expresan proposiciones distintas, pero se refieren al mismo hecho. En este nivel, los fenómenos de vaguedad y ambigüedad son más complejos que en el caso de la semántica léxica. El tercer bloque es el de la estructura interna de la proposición: funciones, argumentos, condiciones gramaticales para ser argumento, cuantificación, el alcance y las unidades con alcance, los restrictores y los tipos semánticos son algunos de los temas que se desarrollan. El cuarto tema es el de la anomalía semántica y las dos cuestiones conectadas con ella: el lenguaje figurado y las paradojas semánticas. Las palabras de cualquier lengua codifican conceptos “razonables” que se refieren a cosas del mundo. Pero cuando combinamos palabras podemos formar pensamientos absurdos, imposibles, obvios, paradójicos... En este último tema se explican estos fenómenos.

En el último, pensado para estudiantes de posgrado, se plantean problemas de interfaz sintaxis-semántica y de interfaz gramática-cognición, cuyo objetivo fundamental es relacionar y reflexionar sobre algunos conceptos y nociones introducidos en los capítulos precedentes.
